1. Generosity Commended

   (Philippians 4:10–20)

2. 1MURAnd, my brethren, we make known to you the grace of God which was conferred on the churches of the Macedonians;BSBBSB: Now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the churches of Macedonia.
3. 2MURthat in the great trial of their affliction, there was an abounding to their joy, and the depth of their poverty was exuberant in the riches of their liberality.BSBBSB: In the terrible ordeal they suffered, their abundant joy and deep poverty overflowed into rich generosity.
4. 3MURFor I testify that, according to their ability, and beyond their ability, in the spontaneity of their mind,BSBBSB: For I testify that they gave according to their ability and even beyond it. Of their own accord,
5. 4MURthey besought us, with much entreaty, that they might participate in the beneficence of the ministration to the saints.BSBBSB: they earnestly pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.
6. 5MURAnd not only as we had expected, but they first gave themselves unto the Lord, and to us by the will of God.BSBBSB: And not only did they do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us, through the will of God.
7. 6MURSo that we requested Titus, that as he had begun, so he would perfect in you also the same beneficence.BSBBSB: So we urged Titus to help complete your act of grace, just as he had started it.
8. 7MURAnd as ye are enriched in every thing, in faith, and speech, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in our love towards you, so abound ye in this beneficence also.BSBBSB: But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness, and in the love we inspired in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.
9. 8MURI do not actually command you, but by the promptitude of your fellow disciples, I would test the sincerity of your love.BSBBSB: I am not giving a command, but I am testing the sincerity of your love through the earnestness of others.
10. 9MURFor ye know the goodness of our Lord Jesus the Messiah, who when he was rich, for your sakes became poor, that by his poverty ye might be made rich.BSBBSB: For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.
11. 10MURAnd I urgently recommend to you, that which is for your advantage; inasmuch as ye began, a year ago, not only to purpose, but also to perform.BSBBSB: And this is my opinion about what is helpful for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give, but even to have such a desire.
12. 11MURAnd now complete ye by action, what ye purposed; that as ye had a promptitude in your purposing, so ye may fulfill it in action, according to your ability.BSBBSB: Now finish the work, so that you may complete it with the same eager desire, according to your means.
13. 12MURFor if there is a willingness, a person is accepted according to what he hath, and not according to what he hath not.BSBBSB: For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.
14. 13MURFor it is not, that others may have easement, and you pressure;BSBBSB: It is not our intention that others may be relieved while you are burdened, but that there may be equality.
15. 14MURbut that ye may be on equality at the present time; and that your abundance may be a supply to their want; that their abundance likewise may be a supply to your want; that there may be equality.BSBBSB: At the present time, your surplus will meet their need, so that in turn their surplus will meet your need. This way there will be equality.
16. 15MURAs it is written, He who gathered much, had nothing over; and he that gathered little, was not deficient.BSBBSB: As it is written: “He who gathered much had no excess, and he who gathered little had no shortfall.”

17. Titus Commended

    (Titus 1:1–4)

18. 16MURBut thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus this solicitude for you.BSBBSB: But thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same devotion I have for you.
19. 17MURFor he received our exhortation; and, because he was very anxious, he cheerfully set out to visit you.BSBBSB: For not only did he welcome our appeal, but he is eagerly coming to you of his own volition.
20. 18MURAnd we also sent with him that our brother, whose praise in the gospel is in all the churches;BSBBSB: Along with Titus we are sending the brother who is praised by all the churches for his work in the gospel.
21. 19MURinasmuch as he likewise had been expressly chosen by the churches, to accompany me with this beneficence which is ministered by us to the glory of God and to our cordiality.BSBBSB: More than that, this brother was chosen by the churches to accompany us with the gracious offering we administer to honor the Lord Himself and to show our eagerness to help.
22. 20MURAnd we hereby guarded, that no one should cast censure on us, in respect to this abundance which is ministered by us.BSBBSB: We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this generous gift.
23. 21MURFor we are attentive to things commendable, not only before God, but also before men.BSBBSB: For we are taking great care to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of men.
24. 22MURAnd we also sent with them that brother of ours, who hath often, and in many things, been proved diligent by us; and is now particularly diligent, from the great confidence he hath in you.BSBBSB: And we are sending along with them our brother who has proven his earnestness to us many times and in many ways, and now even more so by his great confidence in you.
25. 23MURAnd therefore, if Titus be inquired about, he is my associate and assistant among you: or if our other brethren, they are the legates of the churches of the Messiah's glory.BSBBSB: As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you. As for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ.
26. 24MURTherefore exhibit ye to them, in the presence of all the churches, a demonstration of your love and of our glorying respecting you.BSBBSB: In full view of the churches, then, show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our boasting about you.
