Murdock New Testament (Peshitta)Berean Standard Bible

1. Imitators of God

2. 1MURBe ye therefore imitators of God, as dear children:BSBBSB: Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children,
3. 2MURand walk in love; as the Messiah also hath loved us, and hath given up himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God, for a sweet odor.BSBBSB: and walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant sacrificial offering to God.
4. 3MURBut whoredom, and all impurity, and avarice let them not be at all heard of among you, as it becometh the saints;BSBBSB: But among you, as is proper among the saints, there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed.
5. 4MURNeither obscenities, nor words of folly, or of division, or of scurrility, which are not useful; but instead of these, thanksgiving.BSBBSB: Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or crude joking, which are out of character, but rather thanksgiving.
6. 5MURFor this know ye, that every man who is a whoremonger, or impure, or avaricious, or a worshipper of idols, hath no inheritance in the kingdom of the Messiah and of God.BSBBSB: For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or greedy person (that is, an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
7. 6MURLet no man deceive you with vain words; for it is on account of these things that the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.BSBBSB: Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.
8. 7MURTherefore be ye not like them.BSBBSB: Therefore do not be partakers with them.

9. Children of Light

10. 8MURFor ye were heretofore darkness, but now are ye light in our Lord: therefore, as the children of light, so walk ye.BSBBSB: For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,
11. 9MURFor the fruits of the light are in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth.BSBBSB: for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.
12. 10MURAnd search out what is pleasing before our Lord:BSBBSB: Test and prove what pleases the Lord.
13. 11MURAnd have no commerce with the works of darkness which are unfruitful, but reprove them.BSBBSB: Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
14. 12MURFor the things they do in secret, it is nauseous even to mention.BSBBSB: For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
15. 13MURFor all things are exposed and made manifest by the light: and whatever maketh manifest, is light.BSBBSB: But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that is illuminated becomes a light itself.
16. 14MURWherefore it is said: Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and the Messiah will illuminate thee.BSBBSB: So it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
17. 15MURSee therefore, that ye walk circumspectly; not like the simple,BSBBSB: Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,
18. 16MURbut like the wise, who purchase their opportunity; because the days are evil.BSBBSB: redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
19. 17MURTherefore, be not lacking in understanding; but understand ye what is the pleasure of God.BSBBSB: Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
20. 18MURAnd be not drunk with wine, in which is dissoluteness; but be ye filled with the spirit.BSBBSB: Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
21. 19MURAnd converse with yourselves in psalms and hymns; and with your hearts sing to the Lord, in spiritual songs.BSBBSB: Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord,
22. 20MURAnd give thanks to God the Father, at all times, for all men, in the name of our Lord Jesus the Messiah.BSBBSB: always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

23. Wives and Husbands

    (Song of Solomon 1:1–17; 1 Peter 3:1–7)

24. 21MURAnd be submissive one to another, in the love of the Messiah.BSBBSB: Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
25. 22MURWives, be ye submissive to your husbands, as to our Lord.BSBBSB: Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.
26. 23MURBecause the husband is the head of the wife, even as the Messiah is the head of the church; and he is the vivifier of the body.BSBBSB: For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior.
27. 24MURAnd as the church is subject to the Messiah, so also let wives be to their husbands in all things.BSBBSB: Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
28. 25MURHusbands, love your wives, even as the Messiah loved his church, and delivered himself up for it;BSBBSB: Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her
29. 26MURthat he might sanctify it, and cleanse it, by the washing of water, and by the word;BSBBSB: to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,
30. 27MURand might constitute it a glorious church for himself, in which is no stain, and no wrinkle, and nothing like them; but that it might be holy and without blemish.BSBBSB: and to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless.
31. 28MURIt behooveth men so to love their wives, as they do their own bodies. For he that loveth his wife loveth himself.BSBBSB: In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
32. 29MURFor no one ever hated his own body; but nourisheth it, and provideth for it, even as the Messiah the church.BSBBSB: Indeed, no one ever hated his own body, but he nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church.
33. 30MURFor we are members of his body and of his flesh, and of his bones.BSBBSB: For we are members of His body.
34. 31MURFor this reason, a man should quit his father and his mother, and adhere to his wife; and the two should be one flesh.BSBBSB: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”
35. 32MURThis is a great mystery; but I am speaking of the Messiah, and of his church.BSBBSB: This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church.
36. 33MURNevertheless, let each of you severally so love his wife, even as himself: and let the wife reverence her husband.BSBBSB: Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
