1. A Warning against Favoritism

2. 1MURMy brethren, hold ye not the faith of the glory of our Lord Jesus the Messiah, with a respect to persons.BSBBSB: My brothers, as you hold out your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, do not show favoritism.
3. 2MURFor if there come into your assembly a man with rings of gold or splendid garments, and there come in a poor man in sordid garments;BSBBSB: Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in.
4. 3MURand ye show respect to him who is clothed in splendid garments, and say to him, Seat thyself here, conspicuously; while to the poor man, ye say, Stand thou there, or sit thou here before my footstool;BSBBSB: If you lavish attention on the man in fine clothes and say, “Here is a seat of honor,” but say to the poor man, “You must stand” or “Sit at my feet,”
5. 4MURare ye not divided among yourselves, and become expositors of evil thoughts?BSBBSB: have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
6. 5MURHear, my beloved brethren; hath not God chosen the poor of the world, but the rich in faith, to be heirs in the kingdom which God hath promised to them that love him?BSBBSB: Listen, my beloved brothers: Has not God chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom He promised those who love Him?
7. 6MURBut ye have despised the poor man. Do not rich men exalt themselves over you, and drag you before the tribunals?BSBBSB: But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you and drag you into court?
8. 7MURDo they not revile that worthy name, which is invoked upon you?BSBBSB: Are they not the ones who blaspheme the noble name by which you have been called?
9. 8MURAnd if in this ye fulfill the law of God, as it is written, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye will do well:BSBBSB: If you really fulfill the royal law stated in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.
10. 9MURbut if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin; and ye are convicted by the law, as transgressors of the law.BSBBSB: But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
11. 10MURFor he that shall keep the whole law, and yet fail in one precept, is obnoxious to the whole law.BSBBSB: Whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.
12. 11MURFor he who said, Thou shalt not commit adultery, said also, Thou shalt not kill. If then thou commit no adultery, but thou killest, thou hast become a transgressor of the law.BSBBSB: For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
13. 12MURSo speak ye, and so act, as persons that are to be judged by the law of liberty.BSBBSB: Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom.
14. 13MURFor judgment without mercy shall be on him, who hath practised no mercy: by mercy, ye will be raised above judgment.BSBBSB: For judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

15. Faith and Works

    (Galatians 3:1–9)

16. 14MURWhat is the use, my brethren, if a man say, I have faith; and he hath no works? can his faith vivify him?BSBBSB: What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?
17. 15MUROr if a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,BSBBSB: Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.
18. 16MURand one of you say to them, Go in peace, warm yourselves, and be full; and ye give them not the necessaries of the body, what is the use?BSBBSB: If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed,” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that?
19. 17MURSo also faith alone, without works, is dead.BSBBSB: So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead.
20. 18MURFor a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; show to me thy faith that is without works; and I will show to thee, my faith by my works.BSBBSB: But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
21. 19MURThou believest that there is one God; thou dost well; the demons also believe, and tremble.BSBBSB: You believe that God is one. Good for you! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
22. 20MURWouldst thou know, O frail man, that faith without works is dead?BSBBSB: O foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is worthless?
23. 21MURAbraham our father, was not he justified by works, in offering his son Isaac upon the altar?BSBBSB: Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
24. 22MURSeest thou, that his faith aided his works; and that by the works his faith was rendered complete?BSBBSB: You see that his faith was working with his actions, and his faith was perfected by what he did.
25. 23MURAnd the scripture was fulfilled, which saith: Abraham believed in God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness, and he was called the Friend of God.BSBBSB: And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called a friend of God.
26. 24MURThou seest, that by works a man is justified, and not by faith alone.BSBBSB: As you can see, a man is justified by his deeds and not by faith alone.
27. 25MURSo also Rahab, the harlot, was not she justified by works, when she entertained the spies, and sent them forth by another way?BSBBSB: In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute justified by her actions when she welcomed the spies and sent them off on another route?
28. 26MURAs the body without the spirit, is dead; so faith without works, is dead also.BSBBSB: As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
