   (Colossians 1:1–2; Philemon 1:1–3)

2. 1MURPAUL and Timothy, servants of Jesus the Messiah, to all the saints that are in Jesus the Messiah at Philippi, with the elders and deacons.BSBBSB: Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:
3. 2MURGrace be with you, and peace from God our Father, and from our Lord Jesus the Messiah.BSBBSB: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

4. Thanksgiving and Prayer

   (1 Corinthians 1:4–9; Colossians 1:3–14)

5. 3MURI thank my God at the constant recollection of you,BSBBSB: I thank my God every time I remember you.
6. 4MURin all my prayers respecting you; and while I rejoice, I adore;BSBBSB: In every prayer for all of you, I always pray with joy,
7. 5MURon account of your fellowship in the gospel, from the first day until now.BSBBSB: because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,
8. 6MURBecause I am confident of this, that he who hath begun the good works in you, will accomplish them until the day of our Lord Jesus the Messiah.BSBBSB: being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
9. 7MURFor thus it is right for me to think of you all, because ye are permanently in my heart, and because, both in my bonds and in the vindication of the truth of the gospel, ye are my associates in grace.BSBBSB: It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart. For in my chains and in my defense and confirmation of the gospel, you are all partners in grace with me.
10. 8MURFor God is my witness, how I love you in the bowels of Jesus the Messiah.BSBBSB: God is my witness how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
11. 9MURAnd this I pray for, that your love may still increase and abound, in knowledge, and In all spiritual understanding:BSBBSB: And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,
12. 10MURso that ye may discern the things that are suitable; and may be pure and without offence, in the day of the Messiah,BSBBSB: so that you may be able to test and prove what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
13. 11MURand be full of the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus the Messiah, to the praise and glory of God.BSBBSB: filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

14. Paul’s Trials Advance the Gospel

    (James 1:2–12)

15. 12MURAnd I would that ye might know, my brethren, that the transaction in regard to me, hath eventuated rather for the furtherance of the gospel;BSBBSB: Now I want you to know, brothers, that my circumstances have actually served to advance the gospel.
16. 13MURso that my bonds, on account of the Messiah, are matter of notoriety in all the court, and to all others.BSBBSB: As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
17. 14MURAnd many of the brethren in our Lord have become confident, on account of my bonds, and are more bold to speak the word of God without fear.BSBBSB: And most of the brothers, confident in the Lord by my chains, now dare more greatly to speak the word without fear.
18. 15MURAnd they herald it, some from envy and contention; but others with good will, and with love for the Messiah;BSBBSB: It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.
19. 16MURbecause they know that I am appointed for the vindication of the gospel.BSBBSB: The latter do so in love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel.
20. 17MURAnd they who herald the Messiah in contention, do it not sincerely; but they hope to add pressure to my bonds.BSBBSB: The former, however, preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can add to the distress of my chains.
21. 18MURAnd in this I have rejoiced, and do rejoice, that in every form, whether in pretence or in truth, the Messiah is heralded.BSBBSB: What then is the issue? Just this: that in every way, whether by false motives or true, Christ is preached. And in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
22. 19MURFor I know, that these things will be found conducive to my life, through your prayers and the gift of the Spirit of Jesus the Messiah.BSBBSB: because I know that through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, my distress will turn out for my deliverance.
23. 20MURSo that I hope and expect, that I shall in nothing be put to shame; but with uncovered face, as at all times, so now, the Messiah will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.BSBBSB: I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have complete boldness so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

24. To Live Is Christ

25. 21MURFor my life is, the Messiah; and if I die, it is gain to me.BSBBSB: For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
26. 22MURBut if I have fruits of my labors in this life of the flesh, I know not what I shall choose.BSBBSB: But if I go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. So what shall I choose? I do not know.
27. 23MURFor the two press upon me: I desire to be liberated, that I may be with the Messiah; and this would be very advantageous to me.BSBBSB: I am torn between the two. I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better indeed.
28. 24MURBut also the business in regard to you, urges upon me to remain in the body.BSBBSB: But it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
29. 25MURAnd this I confidently know, that I shall continue and remain, for your joy, and for the furtherance of your faith;BSBBSB: Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
30. 26MURso that when I come again to you, your glorying, which is in Jesus the Messiah only, will abound through me.BSBBSB: so that through my coming to you again your exultation in Christ Jesus will resound on account of me.

31. Worthy of the Gospel

32. 27MURLet your conduct be as becometh the gospel of the Messiah; so that if I come I may see you, and if absent I may hear of you, that ye stand fast in one spirit and in one soul, and that ye strive together in the faith of the gospel.BSBBSB: Nevertheless, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending together as one for the faith of the gospel,
33. 28MURAnd in nothing be ye startled, by those who rise up against us; which is an indication of their destruction, and of life for you.BSBBSB: without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a clear sign of their destruction but of your salvation, and it is from God.
34. 29MURAnd this is given to you by God, that ye not only really believe in the Messiah, but also that ye suffer on his account;BSBBSB: For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him,
35. 30MURand that ye endure conflict, as ye have seen in me, and now hear concerning me.BSBBSB: since you are encountering the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
