1بسیاری دست به تألیف حکایت اموری زدهاند که نزد ما به انجام رسیده است.Many have undertaken to compose an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,

2برای انجام این کار، آنها از مطالبی استفاده کردهاند که از طریق شاهدان عینی وقایع و شاگردان اولیه، در دسترس ما قرار گرفته است.just as they were handed down to us by the initial eyewitnesses and servants of the word.

3از آنجا که من خود، این مطالب را از آغاز تا پایان، با دقت بررسی و مطالعه کردهام، چنین صلاح دیدم که ماجرا را به طور کامل و به ترتیب برای شما، عالیجناب تِئوفیلوس، بنویسم،Therefore, having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,

4تا از درستی تعلیمی که یافتهاید، اطمینان حاصل کنید.so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

5ماجرا را از کاهنی یهودی آغاز میکنم، با نام زکریا، که در زمان هیرودیس، پادشاه یهودیه، زندگی میکرد. او عضو دستهای از کاهنان معبد بود که اَبیّا نام داشت. همسرش الیزابت نیز مانند خود او از قبیلهٔ کاهنان یهود و از نسل هارون برادر موسی بود.In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah, and whose wife Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron.

6زکریا و الیزابت هر دو در نظر خدا بسیار درستکار بودند و با جان و دل تمام احکام و فرایض خداوند را رعایت میکردند.Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and decrees of the Lord.

7اما آنها فرزندی نداشتند، زیرا الیزابت نازا بود؛ از این گذشته، هر دو بسیار سالخورده بودند.But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well along in years.

8یکبار که گروه زکریا در معبد خدمت میکرد، و او به انجام وظایف کاهنیِ خود مشغول بود،One day while Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,

9به حکم قرعه نوبت به او رسید که به جایگاه مقدّس معبد داخل شود و در آنجا بخور بسوزاند.he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

10به هنگام سوزاندن بخور، جمعیت انبوهی در صحن معبد مشغول عبادت بودند.And at the hour of the incense offering, the whole congregation was praying outside.

11ناگهان فرشتهای بر زکریا ظاهر شد و در طرف راست مذبح بخور ایستاد.Just then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.

12زکریا از دیدن فرشته مبهوت و هراسان شد.When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and gripped with fear.

13فرشته به او گفت: «ای زکریا، نترس! چون آمدهام به تو خبر دهم که خدا دعایت را شنیده است، و همسرت الیزابت برایت پسری به دنیا خواهد آورد که نامش را یحیی خواهی گذاشت.But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.

14این پسر باعث شادی و سُرور شما خواهد شد، و بسیاری نیز از تولدش شادی خواهند نمود.He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice at his birth,

15زیرا او در نظر خداوند بزرگ خواهد بود. او هرگز نباید شراب و مشروبات سُکرآور بنوشد، چون حتی پیش از تولد، از روحالقدس پر خواهد بود!for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He shall never take wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.

16بسیاری از بنیاسرائیل توسط او به سوی خداوند، خدای خود بازگشت خواهند نمود.Many of the sons of Israel he will turn back to the Lord their God.

17او خدمت خود را با همان روح و قدرت ایلیای نبی انجام خواهد داد. او پیشاپیش مسیح خواهد آمد تا مردم را برای ظهور او آماده کند و دل پدران را به سوی فرزندان بازگرداند. او سبب خواهد شد افراد سرکش، حکمت خداترسان را بپذیرند.»And he will go on before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

18زکریا به فرشته گفت: «ولی این غیرممکن است، چون من پیر شدهام و همسرم نیز سالخورده است!»“How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”

19فرشته در جواب گفت: «من جبرائیل هستم که در حضور خدا میایستم و اوست که مرا فرستاده تا این خبر خوش را به تو بدهم.“I am Gabriel,” replied the angel. “I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.

20اما حال که سخنان مرا باور نکردی، لال خواهی شد و تا زمانی که کودک به دنیا بیاید یارای سخن گفتن نخواهی داشت؛ زیرا آنچه گفتم، در زمان مقرر واقع خواهد شد.»And now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this comes to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”

21در این میان، مردم در صحن معبد منتظر زکریا بودند و از اینکه او در بیرون آمدن از جایگاه مقدّس این همه تأخیر میکرد، در حیرت بودند.Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he took so long in the temple.

22سرانجام وقتی بیرون آمد و نتوانست با ایشان سخن گوید، از اشارات او پی بردند که در جایگاه مقدّس معبد رؤیایی دیده است.When he came out and was unable to speak to them, they realized he had seen a vision in the temple. He kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.

23زکریا پس از پایان دوره خدمتش، به خانهٔ خود بازگشت.And when the days of his service were complete, he returned home.

24طولی نکشید که همسرش الیزابت باردار شد. او برای مدت پنج ماه گوشهنشینی اختیار کرد و میگفت:After these days, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. She declared,

25«سرانجام خداوند بر من نظر لطف انداخت و کاری کرد که دیگر در میان مردم شرمگین نباشم!»“The Lord has done this for me. In these days He has shown me favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”

26در ششمین ماه بارداری الیزابت، خدا فرشته خود جبرائیل را به ناصره، یکی از شهرهای ایالت جلیل فرستاد،In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,

27تا نزد دختری به نام مریم برود. مریم نامزدی داشت به نام یوسف، از نسل داوود پادشاه.to a virgin pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.

28جبرائیل بر مریم ظاهر شد و گفت: «درود بر تو، که بسیار مورد لطف هستی! خداوند با توست!»The angel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29مریم از این سخنان پریشان و متحیّر شد، و نمیدانست این چه نوع تحیّتی میتواند باشد.Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

30فرشته به او گفت: «ای مریم، نترس! زیرا خدا بر تو نظر لطف انداخته است!So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

31تو بهزودی باردار شده، پسری به دنیا خواهی آورد و نامش را عیسی خواهی نهاد.Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus.

32او بسیار بزرگ خواهد بود و پسر خدای متعال نامیده خواهد شد، و خداوند تخت سلطنت جدّش، داوود را به او خواهد سپرد،He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David,

33تا برای همیشه بر نسل یعقوب سلطنت کند، سلطنتی که هرگز پایانی نخواهد داشت!»and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!”

34مریم از فرشته پرسید: «اما چگونه چنین چیزی امکان دارد؟ دست هیچ مردی هرگز به من نرسیده است!»“How can this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35فرشته پاسخ داد: «روحالقدس بر تو خواهد آمد، و قدرت خدای متعال بر تو سایه خواهد افکند. از این رو، آن نوزاد مقدّس بوده، پسر خدا خوانده خواهد شد.The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

36بدان که خویشاوند تو، الیزابت نیز شش ماه پیش در سن پیری باردار شده و بهزودی پسری به دنیا خواهد آورد؛ بله، همان کس که همه او را نازا میخواندند.Look, even Elizabeth your relative has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is in her sixth month.

37زیرا برای خدا هیچ کاری محال نیست!»For no word from God will ever fail.”

38مریم گفت: «من خدمتگزار خداوند هستم. هر چه دربارۀ من گفتی، همان بشود.» آنگاه فرشته او را ترک گفت.“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it happen to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.

39پس از چند روز، مریم تدارک سفر دید و شتابان به کوهستان یهودیه رفت،In those days Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judah,

40جایی که زکریا زندگی میکرد. مریم وارد خانه شده، به الیزابت سلام کرد.where she entered the home of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

41به محض اینکه صدای سلام مریم به گوش الیزابت رسید، آن طفل در رحم او به حرکت درآمد. آنگاه الیزابت از روحالقدس پر شد،When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

42و با صدای بلند به مریم گفت: «تو در میان زنان خجستهای، و فرزندت نیز خجسته است.In a loud voice she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

43چه افتخار بزرگی است برای من، که مادر خداوندم به دیدنم بیاید!And why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44وقتی وارد شدی و به من سلام کردی، به محض اینکه صدایت را شنیدم، بچه از شادی در رَحِمِ من به حرکت درآمد!For as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.

45خوشا به حال تو، زیرا ایمان آوردی که هر چه خدا به تو گفته است، به انجام خواهد رسید!»Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled.”

46مریم گفت: «خداوند را با تمام وجود ستایش میکنم،Then Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord,

47و روح من، به سبب نجاتدهندهام خدا، شاد و مسرور است!and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!

48چون او منِ ناچیز را مورد عنایت قرار داده است. از این پس، همهٔ نسلها مرا خوشبخت خواهند خواند،For He has looked with favor on the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed.

49زیرا خدای قادر و قدوس در حق من کارهای بزرگ کرده است.For the Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is His name.

50«لطف و رحمت او، نسل اندر نسل شامل حال آنانی میشود که از او میترسند.His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation.

51او دست خود را با قدرت دراز کرده و متکبران را همراه نقشههایشان پراکنده ساخته است.He has performed mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who are proud in the thoughts of their hearts.

52سلاطین را از تخت به زیر کشیده و فروتنان را سربلند کرده است.He has brought down rulers from their thrones, but has exalted the humble.

53گرسنگان را با نعمتهای خود سیر کرده، اما ثروتمندان را تهی دست روانه نموده است.He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty.

54او رحمت خود را به یاد آورده، و خادم خویش اسرائیل را یاری داده است.He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful,

55بله، او که وعدهٔ ابدی خود را که به ابراهیم و فرزندانش داده بود، به یاد آورده است.»as He promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever.”

56مریم حدود سه ماه نزد الیزابت ماند. سپس به خانه خود بازگشت.Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

57سرانجام، انتظار الیزابت پایان یافت و زمان وضع حملش فرا رسید و پسری به دنیا آورد.When the time came for Elizabeth to have her child, she gave birth to a son.

58وقتی که همسایگان و بستگان او از این خبر آگاهی یافتند و دیدند که خداوند چه لطف بزرگی در حق او نموده است، نزد او آمده، در شادیاش شریک شدند.Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they rejoiced with her.

59چون نوزاد هشت روزه شد، تمام بستگان و دوستانشان برای مراسم ختنه گرد آمدند و قصد داشتند نام پدرش، زکریا را بر او بگذارند.On the eighth day, when they came to circumcise the child, they were going to name him after his father Zechariah.

60اما الیزابت نپذیرفت و گفت: «نام او یحیی خواهد بود.»But his mother replied, “No! He shall be called John.”

61گفتند: «اما در خانواده تو، کسی چنین نامی نداشته است.»They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who bears this name.”

62پس با اشاره، از پدر نوزاد پرسیدند که میخواهد نام او را چه بگذارد.So they made signs to his father to find out what he wanted to name the child.

63زکریا با اشاره، تختهای خواست و در برابر چشمان حیرتزدهٔ همه نوشت: «نامش یحیی است!»Zechariah asked for a tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they were all amazed.

64در همان لحظه زبانش باز شد و قدرت سخن گفتن را بازیافت و به شکرگزاری خدا پرداخت.Immediately Zechariah’s mouth was opened and his tongue was released, and he began to speak, praising God.

65همسایگان با دیدن تمام این وقایع بسیار متعجب شدند، و خبر این ماجرا در سراسر کوهستان یهودیه پخش شد.All their neighbors were filled with awe, and people throughout the hill country of Judea were talking about these events.

66هر که این خبر را میشنید، به فکر فرو میرفت و از خود میپرسید: «این طفل، در آینده چه خواهد شد؟»، زیرا همه میدیدند که او مورد توجه خاص خداوند قرار دارد.And all who heard this wondered in their hearts and asked, “What then will this child become?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.

67آنگاه پدرش زکریا، از روحالقدس پر شد و نبوّت کرده، چنین گفت:Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:

68«خداوند، خدای اسرائیل را سپاس باد، زیرا به یاری قوم خود شتافته و ایشان را رهایی بخشیده است.“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has visited and redeemed His people.

69او بهزودی برای ما نجاتدهندهای قدرتمند از نسل داوود خواهد فرستاد؛He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David,

70چنانکه از دیرباز، از زبان انبیای مقدّس خود وعده میدادas He spoke through His holy prophets, those of ages past,

71که شخصی را خواهد فرستاد تا ما را از چنگ دشمنانمان و از دست همه آنانی که از ما نفرت دارند، رهایی بخشد.salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,

72«او نسبت به نیاکان ما، رحیم و مهربان بوده است. بله، او عهد و پیمان مقدّس خود را به یاد آورده است،to show mercy to our fathers and to remember His holy covenant,

73همان عهدی را که با سوگند با جدّ ما، ابراهیم بست،the oath He swore to our father Abraham, to grant us

74که ما را از دست دشمنانمان رهایی بخشد تا بتوانیم بدون ترس و واهمه او را عبادت کنیمdeliverance from hostile hands, that we may serve Him without fear,

75و تمام روزهای عمر خود را در حضور او با پاکی و عدالت بگذرانیم.in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our lives.

76«و تو ای فرزند من، نبی خدای متعال نامیده خواهی شد، زیرا پیشاپیش خداوند حرکت خواهی کرد تا راه او را آماده نمایی،And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for Him,

77و قوم او را آگاه سازی که با آمرزش گناهانشان نجات خواهند یافت.to give to His people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,

78اینها، همه به سبب رحمت و شفقت بیپایان خدای ماست. بهزودی سپیده صبح از افق آسمان بر ما طلوع خواهد کردbecause of the tender mercy of our God, by which the Dawn will visit us from on high,

79تا بر کسانی که در تاریکی و سایۀ مرگ ساکن هستند، بتابد و همهٔ ما را به سوی آرامش و صلح و صفا هدایت نماید.»to shine on those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

80آن کودک رشد میکرد و در روح، نیرومند میشد. او در بیابانها به سر میبُرد، تا روزی فرا رسید که میبایست خدمت خود را بهطور علنی در میان قوم اسرائیل آغاز کند.And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the wilderness until the time of his public appearance to Israel.
