6A glória do Senhor será revelada e vista por todos as pessoas’ ”.And all humanity will see God’s salvation.’”

7João dizia às multidões que vinham para o batismo: “Filhos de serpentes! Vocês estão procurando escapar do terrível castigo sem voltar-se verdadeiramente para Deus! É por isso que estão querendo batizar-se!Then John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

8Primeiramente deem frutos que mostrem que vocês realmente se arrependeram. E não pensem que estão livres porque são da família de Abraão. Isso não basta. Destas pedras do deserto Deus pode fazer nascer filhos de Abraão!Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

9O machado do seu julgamento está posto à raiz das árvores. Sim, toda árvore que não der bom fruto será derrubada e atirada no fogo”.The axe lies ready at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10A multidão perguntou: “O que devemos fazer?”The crowds asked him, “What then should we do?”

11“Se alguém tem duas túnicas”, respondeu ele, “dê uma a quem não tiver nenhuma. Quem tiver comida de sobra, dê àqueles que estão com fome”.John replied, “Whoever has two tunics should share with him who has none, and whoever has food should do the same.”

12Até os cobradores de impostos vieram para serem batizados. Eles perguntaram: “Mestre, o que devemos fazer?”Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13Ele respondeu: “Cuidem para que não cobrem mais impostos do que o governo romano exige de vocês”.“Collect no more than you are authorized,” he answered.

14“E nós”, perguntaram alguns soldados, “o que devemos fazer?” João respondeu: “Não tomem dinheiro com ameaças nem violência; não acusem ninguém falsamente; contentem-se com o seu salário!”Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” “Do not take money by force or false accusation,” he said. “Be content with your wages.”

15Todos estavam esperando que o Messias chegasse em breve, e estavam impacientes para saber se João era ele, ou não.The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John could be the Christ.

20Herodes prendeu João na cadeia, acrescentando assim mais esse pecado a todos os outros.Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

21Então um dia o próprio Jesus juntou-se ao povo que era batizado por João. E depois que ele foi batizado, e estava orando, os céus se abriram,When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as He was praying, heaven was opened,

22e o Espírito Santo desceu sobre ele na forma de uma pomba, e uma voz do céu disse: “Você é meu Filho muito amado; em você está o meu prazer”.and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
