GLT And these are the names of the sons of Israel, the ones who came to Egypt. They came in with Jacob, a man and his house: BSB BSB: These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:
GLT Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, BSB BSB: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
GLT Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, BSB BSB: Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
GLT Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. BSB BSB: Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.
GLT And all the lives going out of the loins of Jacob, were 70 lives. And Joseph was in Egypt. BSB BSB: The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all, including Joseph, who was already in Egypt.
GLT And Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died. BSB BSB: Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died,
GLT And the sons of Israel were fruitful and propagated and multiplied and were mighty, with great greatness, and the land was filled with them. BSB BSB: but the Israelites were fruitful and increased rapidly; they multiplied and became exceedingly numerous, so that the land was filled with them.
GLT And a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. BSB BSB: Then a new king, who did not know Joseph, came to power in Egypt.
GLT And he said to his people,“Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many and mighty compared to us. BSB BSB: “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become too numerous and too powerful for us.
GLT Come, let us act wisely toward him, lest he multiplies, and it happens that a battle occurs, and he even adds himself onto the ones hating us, and he fights with us, and he leaves from the land.” BSB BSB: Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”
GLT And insofar as they afflicted him, thus he multiplied and thus he spread out. And they felt a sickening dread from the face of the sons of Israel. BSB BSB: But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and flourished; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites.
GLT And the Egyptians enslaved the sons of Israel with rigor. BSB BSB: They worked the Israelites ruthlessly
GLT And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the second was Puah. BSB BSB: Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah,
GLT And he said,“When you assist the Hebrew women as midwives and you see on the birth stool, if he is a son, then you shall cause him to die, but if she is a daughter, then she shall live.” BSB BSB: “When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them on the birthstools. If the child is a son, kill him; but if it is a daughter, let her live.”
GLT But the midwives feared God and did not do according to what the king of Egypt spoke to them, and they let the sons live. BSB BSB: The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had instructed; they let the boys live.
GLT And the king of Egypt called out to the midwives, and he said to them,“Why have you done this thing, and let the sons live?” BSB BSB: So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”
GLT And the midwives said to Pharaoh,“Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women: for they are lively, and, before the midwife comes to them, they have given birth.” BSB BSB: The midwives answered Pharaoh, “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before a midwife arrives.”
GLT And God caused good to the midwives. And the people multiplied and became very mighty. BSB BSB: So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became even more numerous.
GLT And it came about, since the midwives feared God, that he made houses for them. BSB BSB: And because the midwives feared God, He gave them families of their own.
GLT And Pharaoh commanded to all of his people, saying,“You shall throw every newborn son into the river, but every daughter you shall let live.” BSB BSB: Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: “Every son born to the Hebrews you must throw into the Nile, but every daughter you may allow to live.”
