GLT Now Abraham was old, advanced in days, and Yahweh had blessed Abraham in all{ things}. BSB BSB: By now Abraham was old and well along in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way.
GLT Then Abraham said to his oldest servant of his house, who was in charge of everything that{ belonged} to him,“Please put your hand under my thigh, BSB BSB: So Abraham instructed the chief servant of his household, who managed all he owned, “Place your hand under my thigh,
GLT and I will have you swear by Yahweh, the God of the heavens and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites whom I am living among, BSB BSB: and I will have you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I am dwelling,
GLT but you will go to my country and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son, for Isaac.” BSB BSB: but will go to my country and my kindred to take a wife for my son Isaac.”
GLT Then the servant said to him,“Suppose the woman is not willing to come with me to this land? Should I take your son back to the country that you came from?” BSB BSB: The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
GLT Then Abraham said to him,“Be sure that you do not take my son back there. BSB BSB: Abraham replied, “Make sure that you do not take my son back there.
GLT Yahweh, the God of the heavens, who took me from the house of my father and from the land of my relatives and who spoke to me and who swore to me, saying,‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you will take a wife for my son from there. BSB BSB: The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me from my father’s house and my native land, who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—He will send His angel before you so that you can take a wife for my son from there.
GLT But if the woman is not willing to come with you, then you are clear from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there!” BSB BSB: And if the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”
GLT Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter. BSB BSB: So the servant placed his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
GLT Then he made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at evening time, at the time the women who draw water come out. BSB BSB: As evening approached, he made the camels kneel down near the well outside the town at the time when the women went out to draw water.
GLT Then he said,“Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, please cause it to happen before me today that you show kindness toward my master Abraham. BSB BSB: “O LORD, God of my master Abraham,” he prayed, “please grant me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
GLT Behold, I am standing by this spring of water, and the daughters of the people of the city are coming out to draw water. BSB BSB: Here I am, standing beside the spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.
GLT And let it be{ that} the young woman whom I say to her,‘Please let down your jar so that I may drink,’ and she says,‘Drink and I will also water your camels,’{ let} her{ be the one} you have appointed for your servant, for Isaac. And by her I will know that you have shown kindness toward my master.” BSB BSB: Now may it happen that the girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
GLT Then it happened before he had finished speaking, then behold, Rebekah was coming out, who was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, the brother of Abraham. And her water jar{ was} on her shoulder. BSB BSB: Before the servant had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.
GLT And the young woman{ was} a very beautiful- looking virgin, and a man had not known her. And she went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up. BSB BSB: Now the girl was very beautiful, a virgin who had not had relations with any man. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up again.
GLT Then the servant ran to meet her and said,“Please let me drink a little water from your jar.” BSB BSB: So the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please let me have a little water from your jar.”
GLT And she said,“Drink, my lord.” Then she hurried and lowered her jar to her hand{ s} and gave him a drink. BSB BSB: “Drink, my lord,” she replied, and she quickly lowered her jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
GLT And{ after} she finished giving him a drink, then she said,“I will also draw water for your camels until they have finished drinking.” BSB BSB: After she had given him a drink, she said, “I will also draw water for your camels, until they have had enough to drink.”
GLT Then she hurried and emptied her jar into the trough and ran back to the well to draw water, and she drew water for all his camels. BSB BSB: And she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran back to the well to draw water, until she had drawn water for all his camels.
GLT And the man watched her silently to know whether Yahweh had made his journey succeed or not. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, the man watched her silently to see whether or not the LORD had made his journey a success.
GLT Then it happened, when the camels had finished drinking, then the man took out a gold nose ring, its weight a beka, and two gold bracelets for her arms, their weight ten shekels. BSB BSB: And after the camels had finished drinking, he took out a gold ring weighing a beka, and two gold bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels.
GLT And he said,“Whose daughter{ are} you? Please tell me. Is there a place at the house of your father for us to lodge?” BSB BSB: “Whose daughter are you?” he asked. “Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”
GLT Then she said to him,“I{ am} the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, whom she bore for Nahor.” BSB BSB: She replied, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milcah bore to Nahor.”
GLT Then she said to him,“Plenty of both straw and fodder{ are} with us.{ There is} also a place to lodge.” BSB BSB: Then she added, “We have plenty of straw and feed, as well as a place for you to spend the night.”
GLT Then the man bowed down and prostrated himself before Yahweh, BSB BSB: Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD,
GLT and said,“Praised be Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and his faithfulness toward my master.{ As for} me, Yahweh has led me on the road{ to} the home of the relatives of my master!” BSB BSB: saying, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld His kindness and faithfulness from my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”
GLT Then the young woman ran and announced to the household of her mother about those things. BSB BSB: The girl ran and told her mother’s household about these things.
GLT Now Rebekah had a brother, and his name{ was} Laban, and Laban ran to the man outside at the spring. BSB BSB: Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he rushed out to the man at the spring.
GLT And it was when he had seen the nose ring and the bracelets on the arms of his sister, and when he had heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying,“This{ is} what the man said to me,” then he went to the man, and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. BSB BSB: As soon as he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists, and heard Rebekah’s words, “The man said this to me,” he went and found the man standing by the camels near the spring.
GLT Then he said,“Come, blessed of Yahweh. Why are you standing out here? For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.” BSB BSB: “Come, you who are blessed by the LORD,” said Laban. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
GLT So the man went to the house. Then he unloaded the camels and gave straw and fodder to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who{ were} with him. BSB BSB: So the man came to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and feed were brought to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of his companions.
GLT Then food was set before him to eat, but he said,“I will not eat until I have spoken my words.” So he said,“Speak.” BSB BSB: Then a meal was set before the man, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I came to say.” So Laban said, “Please speak.”
GLT Then he said,“I{ am} a servant of Abraham. BSB BSB: “I am Abraham’s servant,” he replied.
GLT And Yahweh has greatly blessed my master, so that he has become great. And he has given him flock{ s} and herd{ s}, and silver and gold, and men slaves and women slaves, and camels and donkeys. BSB BSB: “The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become rich. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, camels and donkeys.
GLT And Sarah, the wife of my master, bore a son for my master after her old age, and he has given to him everything that{ belongs} to him. BSB BSB: My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age, and my master has given him everything he owns.
GLT And my master made me swear, saying,‘You must not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites whose land I am living in, BSB BSB: My master made me swear an oath and said, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I dwell,
GLT but rather you must go to the house of my father, and to my clan, and take a wife for my son.’ BSB BSB: but you shall go to my father’s house and to my kindred to take a wife for my son.’
GLT Then I said to my master,‘Suppose the woman will not come with me?’ BSB BSB: Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’
GLT And he said to me,‘Yahweh, whom I walk before, will send his angel with you and make your journey succeed, so that you will take a wife for my son from my clan, and from the house of my father. BSB BSB: And he told me, ‘The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you may take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father’s house.
GLT Then you will be clear from my oath: When you go to my clan, and if they will not give her to you, then you will be clear from my oath.’ BSB BSB: And when you go to my kindred, if they refuse to give her to you, then you will be released from my oath.’
GLT “Then today I came to the spring, and I said,‘Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, if it is your will, please make my journey succeed that I have come on. BSB BSB: So when I came to the spring today, I prayed: O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if only You would make my journey a success!
GLT Behold, I am standing by{ this} spring of water. And let it be{ that} the young woman who comes out to draw{ water} and I say to her,“Please give me a little water to drink from your jar,” BSB BSB: Here I am, standing beside this spring. Now if a maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, ‘Please let me drink a little water from your jar,’
GLT and she says to me,“Both you drink and I will also draw water for your camels,”{ let} her{ be} the wife whom Yahweh has chosen for the son of my master.’ BSB BSB: and she replies, ‘Drink, and I will draw water for your camels as well,’ may she be the woman the LORD has appointed for my master’s son.
GLT “Before I had finished speaking in my heart, then behold, Rebekah was coming out and her jar{ was} on her shoulder. And she went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her,‘Please give me a drink.’ BSB BSB: And before I had finished praying in my heart, there was Rebekah coming out with her jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. So I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’
GLT And she hurried and lowered her jar from her and said,‘Drink and I will also water your camels.’ So I drank, and she also watered the camels. BSB BSB: She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well.’ So I drank, and she also watered the camels.
GLT Then I asked her and said,‘Whose daughter{ are} you?’ And she said,‘The daughter of Bethuel, a son of Nahor whom Milcah bore for him.’ Then I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms. BSB BSB: Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She replied, ‘The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.
GLT And I bowed down and prostrated myself before Yahweh, and I praised Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right way to take the daughter of my master’ s brother for his son. BSB BSB: Then I bowed down and worshiped the LORD; and I blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right road to take the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.
GLT And now if it is your will to show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me. But if not, tell me, so that I will turn to the right or to the left.” BSB BSB: Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; but if not, let me know, so that I may go elsewhere.”
GLT Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said,“The thing has come from Yahweh; we are not able to tell you bad or good. BSB BSB: Laban and Bethuel answered, “This is from the LORD; we have no choice in the matter.
GLT Behold, Rebekah{ is} before you. Take her and go, and let her be the wife of the son of your master, as Yahweh has spoken.” BSB BSB: Rebekah is here before you. Take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, just as the LORD has decreed.”
GLT Then it happened, when the servant of Abraham heard their words, then he bowed down to the ground before Yahweh. BSB BSB: When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed down to the ground before the LORD.
GLT Then the servant brought out jewelry of silver and jewelry of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. And he gave valuable things to her brother and to her mother. BSB BSB: Then he brought out jewels of silver and gold, and articles of clothing, and he gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious gifts to her brother and her mother.
GLT Then he and the men who{ were} with him ate and drank and lodged. Then in the morning they got up, and he said,“Send me to my master.” BSB BSB: Then he and the men with him ate and drank and spent the night there. When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way to my master.”
GLT But her brother and her mother said,“Let the young woman stay with us a few days, at least ten. After that she will go.” BSB BSB: But her brother and mother said, “Let the girl remain with us ten days or so. After that, she may go.”
GLT But he said to them,“Do not detain me, since Yahweh has made my journey succeed. Send me off so that I will go to my master.” BSB BSB: But he replied, “Do not delay me, since the LORD has made my journey a success. Send me on my way so that I may go to my master.”
GLT Then they said,“Let’ s call for the young woman and ask her mouth.” BSB BSB: So they said, “We will call the girl and ask her opinion.”
GLT So they called for Rebekah and said to her,“Will you go with this man?” And she said,“I will go.” BSB BSB: They called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?” “I will go,” she replied.
GLT Then they sent off Rebekah their sister and her nurse and the servant of Abraham and his men. BSB BSB: So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men.
GLT And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,“Our sister, may you become thousands of myriads, and may your offspring possess the gates of{ those} hating them!” BSB BSB: And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister, may you become the mother of thousands upon thousands. May your offspring possess the gates of their enemies.”
GLT Then Rebekah got up and her maids, and they mounted the camels and went with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left. BSB BSB: Then Rebekah and her servant girls got ready, mounted the camels, and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.
GLT Meanwhile Isaac came from going to Beer Lahai Roi, and he was living in the land of the Negev. BSB BSB: Now Isaac had just returned from Beer-lahai-roi, for he was living in the Negev.
GLT And Isaac went to meditate in the field as it was turning toward evening, and he lifted his eyes and saw that, behold, camels were coming. BSB BSB: Early in the evening, Isaac went out to the field to meditate, and looking up, he saw the camels approaching.
GLT And Rebekah lifted her eyes and saw Isaac. Then she dismounted from the camel, BSB BSB: And when Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac, she got down from her camel
GLT and she said to the servant,“Who{ is} that man in the field who is coming to meet us?” And the servant said,“He{ is} my master.” So she took the veil and covered herself. BSB BSB: and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?” “It is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself.
GLT Then the servant reported to Isaac all the things that he had done. BSB BSB: Then the servant told Isaac all that he had done.
GLT Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother, and he took Rebekah, and she became a wife to him. And Isaac loved her, and he was comforted after his mother. BSB BSB: And Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah and took Rebekah as his wife. And Isaac loved her and was comforted after his mother’s death.
