GLT Then it happened, when Isaac was old and his eyes were too dim to see, then he called Esau, his older son, and said to him,“My son.” And he said to him,“Behold me.” BSB BSB: When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” “Here I am,” Esau replied.
GLT Then he said,“Behold, please, I am old; I do not know the day of my death. BSB BSB: “Look,” said Isaac, “I am now old, and I do not know the day of my death.
GLT So now, please take your weapons, your quiver, and your bow, and go out{ in} the field and hunt game for me. BSB BSB: Take your weapons—your quiver and bow—and go out into the field to hunt some game for me.
GLT Then prepare tasty food for me such as I love, and bring it to me so I can eat it, so that my soul can bless you before I die.” BSB BSB: Then prepare a tasty dish that I love and bring it to me to eat, so that I may bless you before I die.”
GLT And Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to Esau his son. Then Esau went{ to} the field to hunt game to bring it back. BSB BSB: Now Rebekah was listening to what Isaac told his son Esau. So when Esau went into the field to hunt game and bring it back,
GLT Then Rebekah said to Jacob her son, saying,“Behold, I heard your father speaking to Esau your brother, saying, BSB BSB: Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Behold, I overheard your father saying to your brother Esau,
GLT ‘Bring game for me and prepare tasty food for me so that I can eat it and I can bless you in the presence of Yahweh, before my death.’ BSB BSB: ‘Bring me some game and prepare me a tasty dish to eat, so that I may bless you in the presence of the LORD before I die.’
GLT So now, my son, listen to my voice, to what I command you. BSB BSB: Now, my son, listen to my voice and do exactly as I tell you.
GLT Please go to the flock and bring to me from there two good kids of the goats so that I will prepare from them tasty food for your father such as he loves. BSB BSB: Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so that I can make them into a tasty dish for your father—the kind he loves.
GLT Then you take it to your father, and he will eat{ it}, so that he will bless you before his death.” BSB BSB: Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies.”
GLT Then Jacob said to Rebekah his mother,“Behold, Esau my brother{ is} a hairy man, but I{ am} a smooth man. BSB BSB: Jacob answered his mother Rebekah, “Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man, but I am smooth-skinned.
GLT Suppose my father touches me? Then I will be in his eyes as a deceiver, and I will bring a curse on me and not a blessing.” BSB BSB: What if my father touches me? Then I would be revealed to him as a deceiver, and I would bring upon myself a curse rather than a blessing.”
GLT But his mother said to him,“Let your curse be on me, my son. Just listen to my voice, and go get{ them} for me.” BSB BSB: His mother replied, “Your curse be on me, my son. Just obey my voice and go get them for me.”
GLT So he went and got{ them} and brought{ them} to his mother. Then his mother prepared tasty food such as his father loved. BSB BSB: So Jacob went and got two goats and brought them to his mother, who made the tasty food his father loved.
GLT Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son that{ were} with her in the house and put them on Jacob her younger son. BSB BSB: And Rebekah took the finest clothes in the house that belonged to her older son Esau, and she put them on her younger son Jacob.
GLT And she put the skins of the kid goats over his hands and over the smooth part of his neck. BSB BSB: She also put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.
GLT Then she gave the tasty food and the bread that she had made into the hand{ s} of Jacob her son, BSB BSB: Then she handed her son Jacob the tasty food and bread she had made.
GLT and he went to his father and said,“My father.” And he said,“Behold me. Who{ are} you, my son?” BSB BSB: So Jacob went to his father and said, “My father.” “Here I am!” he answered. “Which one are you, my son?”
GLT Then Jacob said to his father,“I{ am} Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please get up, sit and eat some of my game, so that your soul will bless me.” BSB BSB: Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may bless me.”
GLT Then Isaac said to his son,“How{ is} this you were quick to find{ it}, my son?” And he said,“Because Yahweh your God caused{ it} to happen before me.” BSB BSB: But Isaac asked his son, “How did you ever find it so quickly, my son?” “Because the LORD your God brought it to me,” he replied.
GLT Then Isaac said to Jacob,“Please come close, so that I can touch you, my son,{ and know} whether you are really my son Esau or not.” BSB BSB: Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I can touch you, my son. Are you really my son Esau, or not?”
GLT So Jacob went close to Isaac his father, and he touched him and said,“The voice{ is} the voice of Jacob, but the hands{ are} the hands of Esau.” BSB BSB: So Jacob came close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”
GLT So he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like the hands of Esau his brother, and he was about to bless him. BSB BSB: Isaac did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him.
GLT But he said,“{ Are} you really my son Esau?” And he said,“I{ am}.” BSB BSB: Again he asked, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he replied, “I am.”
GLT Then he said,“Bring{ the food} to me, and I will eat some of my son’ s game, so that my soul will bless you.” Then he brought{ it} to him, and he ate; and he brought wine to him, and he drank. BSB BSB: “Serve me,” said Isaac, “and let me eat some of my son’s game, so that I may bless you.” Jacob brought it to him, and he ate; then he brought him wine, and he drank.
GLT Then Isaac his father said to him,“Please come close and kiss me, my son.” BSB BSB: Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come near and kiss me, my son.”
GLT So he went close and kissed him. And he smelled the smell of his clothes, so he blessed him and said,“See, the smell of my son{ is} like the smell of a field that Yahweh has blessed! BSB BSB: So he came near and kissed him. When Isaac smelled his clothing, he blessed him and said: “Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.
GLT And may God give to you from the dew of the heavens and from the fatness of the earth, and an abundance of grain and wine. BSB BSB: May God give to you the dew of heaven and the richness of the earth—an abundance of grain and new wine.
GLT May peoples serve you, and may nations bow down to you. Be master over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.{ May} those{ who} curse you be cursed, and{ may} those{ who} bless you be blessed.” 27:30-40 BSB BSB: May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. May you be the master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed.”
GLT Then it happened, just as Isaac finished blessing Jacob, and it happened, scarcely had Jacob just left from the presence of Isaac his father, then Esau his brother came in from his hunt. BSB BSB: As soon as Isaac had finished blessing him and Jacob had left his father’s presence, his brother Esau returned from the hunt.
GLT Then he too prepared tasty food, and he brought{ it} to his father and said to his father,“Let my father get up and eat from his son’ s game so that your soul can bless me.” BSB BSB: He too made some tasty food, brought it to his father, and said to him, “My father, sit up and eat of your son’s game, so that you may bless me.”
GLT But Isaac his father said to him,“Who{ are} you?” And he said,“I{ am} your son, your firstborn Esau.” BSB BSB: But his father Isaac replied, “Who are you?” “I am Esau, your firstborn son,” he answered.
GLT Then Isaac trembled a very great tremble, and he said,“Then who{ was} it that hunted game and brought{ it} to me? And I ate from{ it} all just before you came, and I blessed him. Indeed, he will be blessed.” BSB BSB: Isaac began to tremble violently and said, “Who was it, then, who hunted the game and brought it to me? Before you came in, I ate it all and blessed him—and indeed, he will be blessed!”
GLT When Esau heard the words of his father, then he cried out a great and exceedingly bitter cry and said to his father,“Bless me, me too, my father!” BSB BSB: When Esau heard his father’s words, he let out a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me too, O my father!”
GLT And he said,“Your brother came in deceit and took your blessing.” BSB BSB: But Isaac replied, “Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing.”
GLT Then he said,“Is it because his name is called Jacob that he has defrauded me these two times? He took my birthright, and behold, now he has taken my blessing!” Then he said,“Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” BSB BSB: So Esau declared, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has cheated me twice. He took my birthright, and now he has taken my blessing.” Then he asked, “Haven’t you saved a blessing for me?”
GLT But Isaac responded and said to Esau,“Behold, I have made him master over you, and I have given all his brothers to him as servants. And I have sustained him with grain and wine. So then, what can I do for you, my son?” BSB BSB: But Isaac answered Esau: “Look, I have made him your master and given him all his relatives as servants; I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?”
GLT But Esau said to his father,“Is there one blessing that you have, my father? Bless me, me too, my father!” Then Esau lifted his voice and sobbed. BSB BSB: Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, O my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.
GLT Then Isaac his father responded and said to him,“Behold, your dwelling will be away from the fatness of the earth and away from the dew of the heavens from above. BSB BSB: His father Isaac answered him: “Behold, your dwelling place shall be away from the richness of the land, away from the dew of heaven above.
GLT And you will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother. But it will happen when you become restless, then you will break his yoke off of your neck.” 27:41-28:5 BSB BSB: You shall live by the sword and serve your brother. But when you rebel, you will tear his yoke from your neck.”
GLT Then Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing that his father had blessed him with, and Esau said in his heart,“The days of the mourning of my father are near; then I will kill Jacob my brother.” BSB BSB: Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. And Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
GLT But the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah, so she sent and called for Jacob her younger son and said to him,“Behold, Esau your brother is consoling himself about you, planning to kill you. BSB BSB: When the words of her older son Esau were relayed to Rebekah, she sent for her younger son Jacob and told him, “Look, your brother Esau is consoling himself by plotting to kill you.
GLT So now, my son, listen to my voice and get up, flee for yourself to Laban my brother in Haran! BSB BSB: So now, my son, obey my voice and flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran.
GLT And stay with him for a few days until the fury of your brother turns away, BSB BSB: Stay with him for a while, until your brother’s fury subsides—
GLT until the anger of your brother turns away from you and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send and get you from there. Why should I also lose both of you{ in} one day?” BSB BSB: until your brother’s rage against you wanes and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”
GLT Then Rebekah said to Isaac,“I am disgusted with my life because of the daughters of Heth! If Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth like these, from daughters of the land, what{ would} life{ be} to me?” BSB BSB: Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a Hittite wife from among them, what good is my life?”
