GLT Then Jacob went on his way, and angels of God met him. BSB BSB: Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
GLT And when he saw them, Jacob said,“This{ is} God’ s camp!” So he called the name of that place Mahanaim. BSB BSB: When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God.” So he named that place Mahanaim.
GLT Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother to the land of Seir, the country of Edom. BSB BSB: Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
GLT And he commanded them, saying,“This{ is what} you will say to my lord, to Esau:‘This{ is what} your servant Jacob says,“I have been sojourning with Laban and have remained there until now. BSB BSB: He instructed them, “You are to say to my master Esau, ‘Your servant Jacob says: I have been staying with Laban and have remained there until now.
GLT And I have cattle and donkey{ s}, flock{ s}, and menservant{ s} and maidservant{ s}. And I have sent{ messengers} to speak with my lord, so that I will find favor in your eyes.”’” BSB BSB: I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, menservants, and maidservants. I have sent this message to inform my master, so that I may find favor in your sight.’”
GLT Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying,“We went to your brother, to Esau. And also, he is coming to meet you, and 400 men with him!” BSB BSB: When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you—he and four hundred men with him.”
GLT And Jacob was exceedingly afraid, and it was distressing for him, so he divided the people who{ were} with him and the flock{ s} and the herd{ s} and the camels into two camps. BSB BSB: In great fear and distress, Jacob divided his people into two camps, as well as the flocks and herds and camels.
GLT And he said,“If Esau comes to one camp and strikes them, then the camp that is left will escape.” BSB BSB: He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one camp, then the other camp can escape.”
GLT Then Jacob said,“God of my grandfather Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh, who said to me,‘Return to your land and to your relatives, and I will cause things to prosper with you,’ BSB BSB: Then Jacob declared, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, the LORD who told me, ‘Go back to your country and to your kindred, and I will make you prosper,’
GLT I am unworthy of all the kindnesses and of all the faithfulness that you have shown your servant. For I crossed this Jordan with my staff, but now I have become two camps. BSB BSB: I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant. Indeed, with only my staff I came across the Jordan, but now I have become two camps.
GLT Please save me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, because I am afraid of him, that he will come and strike me{ and} the mothers with the children! BSB BSB: Please deliver me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid that he may come and attack me and the mothers and children with me.
GLT But you said,‘I will surely cause things to prosper with you, and I will make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted from{ their} abundance.’” BSB BSB: But You have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, too numerous to count.’”
GLT Then he stayed there for that night, and he took gifts from what was in his hand for Esau his brother: BSB BSB: Jacob spent the night there, and from what he had brought with him, he selected a gift for his brother Esau:
GLT two hundred she- goats and twenty he- goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, BSB BSB: 200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,
GLT thirty nursing camels and their young, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. BSB BSB: 30 milk camels with their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, and 10 male donkeys.
GLT And he gave them into the hand{ s} of his servants, each herd by itself. And he said to his servants,“Go before me, and put space between each herd.” BSB BSB: He entrusted them to his servants in separate herds and told them, “Go on ahead of me, and keep some distance between the herds.”
GLT And he commanded the first{ one}, saying,“When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying,‘Whom do you{ belong} to, and where are you going? And whom do these{ animals}{ belong} to{ that are} before you?’ BSB BSB: He instructed the one in the lead, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘To whom do you belong, where are you going, and whose animals are these before you?’
GLT then you say,‘{ They belong} to your servant, to Jacob. They{ are} a gift sent to my lord, to Esau. And behold, he{ is} also behind us.’” BSB BSB: then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift, sent to my lord Esau. And behold, Jacob is behind us.’”
GLT Then he also commanded the second{ servant}, also the third, also all who followed behind the herds, saying,“Say the same thing to Esau when you find him. BSB BSB: He also instructed the second, the third, and all those following behind the herds: “When you meet Esau, you are to say the same thing to him.
GLT And also say,‘Behold, your servant Jacob{ is} behind us.’” For he said,“I will cover his face with the gift that is going before me, and after that, when I see his face, perhaps he will receive my face.” BSB BSB: You are also to say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” For he thought, “I will appease Esau with the gift that is going before me. After that I can face him, and perhaps he will accept me.”
GLT Then the gift went before him, and he himself stayed for that night in the camp. 32:22-32 BSB BSB: So Jacob’s gifts went on before him, while he spent the night in the camp.
GLT Then during that night he got up and took his two wives and his two maidservants and his eleven sons and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok. BSB BSB: During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven sons, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
GLT So he took them and had them cross over the stream, and he sent what{ belonged} to him across. BSB BSB: He took them and sent them across the stream, along with all his possessions.
GLT Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the dawn came up. BSB BSB: So Jacob was left all alone, and there a man wrestled with him until daybreak.
GLT And he saw that he was not prevailing over him, so he touched{ him} on the socket of his hip, so that the socket of Jacob’ s hip was dislocated as he wrestled with him. BSB BSB: When the man saw that he could not overpower Jacob, he struck the socket of Jacob’s hip and dislocated it as they wrestled.
GLT Then he said,“Release me, because the dawn has come up!” But he said,“I will not release you unless you bless me!” BSB BSB: Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
GLT So he said to him,“What{ is} your name?” And he said,“Jacob.” BSB BSB: “What is your name?” the man asked. “Jacob,” he replied.
GLT Then he said,“Your name will not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.” BSB BSB: Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.”
GLT Then Jacob asked and said,“Please tell{ me} your name.” But he said,“Why{ is} this you are asking for my name?” Then he blessed him there. BSB BSB: And Jacob requested, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed Jacob there.
GLT So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, because{ he said},“I saw God face to face, but my life was preserved!” BSB BSB: So Jacob named the place Peniel, saying, “Indeed, I have seen God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
GLT And the sun rose on him as he passed Penuel, and he was limping because of his hip. BSB BSB: The sun rose above him as he passed by Penuel, and he was limping because of his hip.
GLT For that{ reason}, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the muscle of the tendon that{ is} on the socket of the hip, because he touched the socket of Jacob’ s hip on the muscle of the tendon. BSB BSB: Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was struck near that tendon.
