1 GLT In the seventh month on the twenty- first day of the month, the word of Yahweh came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying, BSB BSB: On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying:
2 GLT “Speak now to the governor of Judah, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people. Say, BSB BSB: “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and also to the remnant of the people. Ask them,
3 GLT ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not like nothing in your eyes? BSB BSB: ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not appear to you like nothing in comparison?’
4 GLT Now, be strong, O Zerubbabel!— this is the declaration of Yahweh— and be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land!— this is the declaration of Yahweh— and work, for I am with you!— this is the declaration of Yahweh of hosts. BSB BSB: But now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. And be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work! For I am with you, declares the LORD of Hosts.
5 GLT This is the word which I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit remains in your midst. Do not fear! BSB BSB: This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt. And My Spirit remains among you; do not be afraid.”
6 GLT For thus says Yahweh of hosts: In a little while I will once again shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land! BSB BSB: For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
8 GLT The silver is mine, and the gold is mine— this is the declaration of Yahweh of hosts. BSB BSB: The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, declares the LORD of Hosts.
9 GLT The glory of this house will be greater in the future than at the beginning, says Yahweh of hosts, and I will give peace in this place!— this is the declaration of Yahweh of hosts.” BSB BSB: The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former, says the LORD of Hosts. And in this place I will provide peace, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
10 GLT On the twenty- fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of Yahweh came by Haggai the prophet, saying, BSB BSB: On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet, saying,
11 GLT “Thus says Yahweh of hosts: Ask the priests concerning the law, and say, BSB BSB: “This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Ask the priests for a ruling.
12 GLT ‘If a man carries meat that is set apart to Yahweh in the fold of his garment, and the fold touches bread or stew, wine or oil, or any kind of food, does it become holy?’” The priests answered and said,“No.” BSB BSB: If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does that item become holy?’” “No,” replied the priests.
13 GLT Then Haggai said,“If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these things, do they become unclean?” The priests answered and said,“Yes, they become unclean.” BSB BSB: So Haggai asked, “If one who is defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?” “Yes, it becomes defiled,” the priests answered.
14 GLT So Haggai answered and said,“So it is with this people and this nation before me!— this is the declaration of Yahweh— and so it is with every work done by their hands. What they offer there is unclean! BSB BSB: Then Haggai replied, “So it is with this people and this nation before Me, declares the LORD, and so it is with every work of their hands; whatever they offer there is defiled.
15 GLT Now then, set your hearts to consider from this day onward. Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of Yahweh, BSB BSB: Now consider carefully from this day forward: Before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD,
16 GLT From that time when you came to a heap of twenty{ measures of grain}, there were only ten; and when you came to the wine vat to draw out fifty{ measures of wine}, there were only twenty. BSB BSB: from that time, when one came expecting a heap of twenty ephahs of grain, there were but ten. When one came to the winepress to draw out fifty baths, there were but twenty.
17 GLT I struck you and all the work of your hands with blight and with mildew and with hail, but you still did not turn to me— this is the declaration of Yahweh. BSB BSB: I struck you—all the work of your hands—with blight, mildew, and hail, but you did not turn to Me, declares the LORD.
18 GLT Please set your hearts to consider from this day forward, from the twenty- fourth day of the ninth month, from the day that the foundation of the temple of Yahweh was laid. Set your hearts to consider this! BSB BSB: Consider carefully from this day forward—from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the day the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid—consider carefully:
19 GLT Is there still seed in the storehouse? Until now the vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not produced! But from this day I will bless you!” BSB BSB: Is there still seed in the barn? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet yielded fruit. But from this day on, I will bless you.”
20 GLT Then the word of Yahweh came a second time to Haggai on the twenty- fourth day of the month and said, BSB BSB: For the second time that day, the twenty-fourth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to Haggai, saying,
21 GLT “Speak to Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, and say,‘I am about to shake the heavens and the earth. BSB BSB: “Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am about to shake the heavens and the earth:
22 GLT For I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms and destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations! I will overthrow the chariots and their riders; the horses and their riders will fall down, each one by the sword of his brother. BSB BSB: I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overturn chariots and their riders; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
23 GLT On that day— this is the declaration of Yahweh of hosts— I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant— this is the declaration of Yahweh. I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you!— this is the declaration of Yahweh of hosts!’” BSB BSB: On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will take you, My servant, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and I will make you like My signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
