GLT The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, BSB BSB: This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
GLT “Arise and go out to the potter’ s house, for I will have you hear my word there.” BSB BSB: “Go down at once to the potter’s house, and there I will give you My message.”
GLT So I went out to the potter’ s house, and behold! The potter was working on the potter’ s wheel. BSB BSB: So I went down to the potter’s house and saw him working at the wheel.
GLT But the pot he was making from the clay was spoiled in the potter’ s hand, so he returned the clay and formed it into another pot, and he made it into an object that was pleasing in his eyes. BSB BSB: But the vessel that he was shaping from the clay became flawed in his hand; so he formed it into another vessel, as it seemed best for him to do.
GLT Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, BSB BSB: Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
GLT “Should I not be able to act like this potter with you, house of Israel?— this is Yahweh’ s declaration. Behold! Like clay in a potter’ s hand— that is how you are in my hand, house of Israel. BSB BSB: “O house of Israel, declares the LORD, can I not treat you as this potter treats his clay? Just like clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.
GLT At one moment, I may proclaim something about a nation or a kingdom, that I will drive it out, tear it down, or destroy it. BSB BSB: At any time I might announce that a nation or kingdom will be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed.
GLT But if the nation about which I have made that proclamation turns from its evil, then I will relent from the disaster that I was planning to bring upon it. BSB BSB: But if that nation I warned turns from its evil, then I will relent of the disaster I had planned to bring.
GLT At another moment, I may proclaim something about a nation or a kingdom, that I will build it up or plant it. BSB BSB: And if at another time I announce that I will build up and establish a nation or kingdom,
GLT But if it does evil in my eyes by not listening to my voice, then I will stop the good that I had said I would do for them. BSB BSB: and if it does evil in My sight and does not listen to My voice, then I will relent of the good I had intended for it.
GLT So now, speak to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and say,‘Yahweh says this: See, I am about to form disaster against you. I am about to devise a plan against you. Repent, each person from his wicked way, so your ways and your practices will bring good to you.’ BSB BSB: Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem that this is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I am planning a disaster for you and devising a plan against you. Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways, and correct your ways and deeds.’
GLT But they will say,‘This is no use. We will act according to our own plans. Each one of us will do what his evil, stubborn heart desires.’ BSB BSB: But they will reply, ‘It is hopeless. We will follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’”
GLT Therefore Yahweh says this,‘Ask the nations, who has ever heard of such a thing as this? The virgin Israel has committed a horrible act. BSB BSB: Therefore this is what the LORD says: “Inquire among the nations: Who has ever heard things like these? Virgin Israel has done a most terrible thing.
GLT Does the snow in Lebanon ever leave the rocky hills on its sides? Are the mountain streams coming from far away ever destroyed, those cold streams? BSB BSB: Does the snow of Lebanon ever leave its rocky slopes? Or do its cool waters flowing from a distance ever run dry?
GLT Yet my people have forgotten me. They have made offerings to useless idols and been made to stumble in their paths; they have left the ancient paths to walk lesser paths. BSB BSB: Yet My people have forgotten Me. They burn incense to worthless idols that make them stumble in their ways, leaving the ancient roads to walk on rutted bypaths instead of on the highway.
GLT Their land will become a horror, an object of everlasting hissing. Everyone who passes by her will shudder and shake his head. BSB BSB: They have made their land a desolation, a perpetual object of scorn; all who pass by will be appalled and shake their heads.
GLT I will scatter them before their enemies like an eastern wind. I will show them my back, and not my face, on the day of their disaster.’” BSB BSB: I will scatter them before the enemy like the east wind. I will show them My back and not My face in the day of their calamity.”
GLT So the people said,“Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, since the law will never perish from the priests, or advice from the wise men, or words from the prophets. Come, let us attack him with our words and no longer pay attention to anything he proclaims.” BSB BSB: Then some said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah, for the law will never be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the wise, nor an oracle to the prophet. Come, let us denounce him and pay no heed to any of his words.”
GLT Pay attention to me, Yahweh, and listen to the voice of my enemies. BSB BSB: Attend to me, O LORD. Hear what my accusers are saying!
GLT Will disaster from them really be my reward for being good to them? For they have dug a pit for me. Remember how I stood before you to speak for their welfare, to cause your fury to turn away from them. BSB BSB: Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit for me. Remember how I stood before You to speak good on their behalf, to turn Your wrath from them.
GLT Therefore give their children over to famine, and give them to the hands of those who use the sword. So let their women become bereaved and widows, and their men be killed, and their young men killed by the sword in battle. BSB BSB: Therefore, hand their children over to famine; pour out the power of the sword upon them. Let their wives become childless and widowed; let their husbands be slain by disease, their young men struck down by the sword in battle.
GLT Let a distressed shout be heard from their houses, as you suddenly bring raiders against them. For they have dug a pit to capture me and have hidden traps for my feet. BSB BSB: Let a cry be heard from their houses when You suddenly bring raiders against them, for they have dug a pit to capture me and have hidden snares for my feet.
GLT But you, Yahweh, you know all of their plans against me to kill me. Do not forgive their iniquities and sins. Do not wipe their sins away from you. Instead, let them be overthrown before you. Act against them in the time of your wrath. BSB BSB: But You, O LORD, know all their deadly plots against me. Do not wipe out their guilt or blot out their sin from Your sight. Let them be overthrown before You; deal with them in the time of Your anger.
