1 GLT The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, saying, BSB BSB: This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:
2 GLT “Go to the family of the Rekabites and speak with them. Then bring them to my house, into one of the rooms there, and give them wine to drink.” BSB BSB: “Go to the house of the Rechabites, speak to them, and bring them to one of the chambers of the house of the LORD to offer them a drink of wine.”
3 GLT So I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah son of Habazziniah and his brothers, all his sons, and all the family of the Rekabites. BSB BSB: So I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons—the entire house of the Rechabites—
4 GLT I took them to the house of Yahweh, into the rooms of the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, the man of God. These rooms were beside the room of the leaders, which was above the room of Maaseiah son of Shallum, the gatekeeper. BSB BSB: and I brought them into the house of the LORD, to a chamber occupied by the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, a man of God. This room was near the chamber of the officials, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah son of Shallum the doorkeeper.
5 GLT Then I placed bowls and cups full of wine in front of the Rekabites and said to them,“Drink some wine.” BSB BSB: Then I set pitchers full of wine and some cups before the men of the house of the Rechabites, and I said to them, “Drink some wine.”
6 GLT But they said,“We will not drink any wine, for our ancestor, Jonadab son of Rekab, commanded us,‘Do not drink any wine, neither you nor your descendants, forever. BSB BSB: “We do not drink wine,” they replied, “for our forefather Jonadab son of Rechab commanded us, ‘Neither you nor your descendants are ever to drink wine.
7 GLT Also, do not build any houses, sow any seeds, or plant any vineyards; this is not for you. For you must live in tents all your days, so that you might live many days in the land where you are staying as foreigners.’ BSB BSB: Nor are you ever to build a house or sow seed or plant a vineyard. Those things are not for you. Instead, you must live in tents all your lives, so that you may live a long time in the land where you wander.’
8 GLT We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab son of Rekab, our ancestor, in all that he commanded us, to never drink wine all of our days, we, our wives, our sons, and our daughters. BSB BSB: And we have obeyed the voice of our forefather Jonadab son of Rechab in all he commanded us. So we have not drunk wine all our lives—neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters.
9 GLT We will never build houses to live in, and there will be no vineyard, field, or seed in our possession. BSB BSB: Nor have we built houses in which to live, and we have not owned any vineyards or fields or crops.
10 GLT We have lived in tents and we have obeyed and done all that Jonadab our ancestor commanded us. BSB BSB: But we have lived in tents and have obeyed and done exactly as our forefather Jonadab commanded us.
11 GLT But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon attacked the land, we said,‘Come, we must go to Jerusalem to escape from the Chaldean and Aramean armies.’ So we are living in Jerusalem.” BSB BSB: So when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched into the land, we said: ‘Come, let us go into Jerusalem to escape the armies of the Chaldeans and the Arameans.’ So we have remained in Jerusalem.”
12 GLT Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, saying, BSB BSB: Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
13 GLT “Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, says this,‘Go and say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,“Will you not receive correction and listen to my words?— this is Yahweh’ s declaration. BSB BSB: “This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem: ‘Will you not accept discipline and obey My words?’ declares the LORD.
14 GLT The words of Jonadab son of Rekab that he gave to his sons as a command, not to drink any wine, have been observed to this very day. They have obeyed their ancestor’ s command. But as for me, I myself have been making persistent proclamations to you, but you do not listen to me. BSB BSB: The words of Jonadab son of Rechab have been carried out. He commanded his sons not to drink wine, and they have not drunk it to this very day because they have obeyed the command of their forefather. But I have spoken to you again and again, and you have not obeyed Me!
15 GLT I sent out to you all my servants, the prophets. I was persistent in sending them to say,‘Let each person turn from his wicked way and do good deeds; let no one walk any longer after other gods and worship them. Instead, come back to the land that I gave to you and your ancestors.’ Yet you will not listen to me or pay attention to me. BSB BSB: Again and again I have sent you all My servants the prophets, proclaiming: ‘Turn now, each of you, from your wicked ways, and correct your actions. Do not go after other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I have given to you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear or listened to Me.
16 GLT For the descendants of Jonadab son of Rekab have observed the commands of their ancestor that he gave them, but this people refuses to listen to me.”’ BSB BSB: Yes, the sons of Jonadab son of Rechab carried out the command their forefather gave them, but these people have not listened to Me.
17 GLT So Yahweh, God of hosts and God of Israel, says this,‘Look, I am bringing upon Judah and on everyone living in Jerusalem, all the disasters I pronounced against them because I spoke to them, but they did not listen; I called to them, but they did not answer.’” BSB BSB: Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will bring to Judah and to all the residents of Jerusalem all the disaster I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them but they have not obeyed, and I have called to them but they have not answered.’”
18 GLT Jeremiah said to the family of the Rekabites,“Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, says this: You have listened to the commands of Jonadab your ancestor and have kept them all— you have obeyed all that he commanded you to do— BSB BSB: Then Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites: “This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Because you have obeyed the command of your forefather Jonadab and have kept all his commandments and have done all that he charged you to do,
19 GLT so Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, says this,‘There will always be someone descended from Jonadab son of Rekab to serve me.’” BSB BSB: this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Jonadab son of Rechab will never fail to have a man to stand before Me.’”
