GLT Then when Jesus knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John BSB BSB: When Jesus realized that the Pharisees were aware He was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John
GLT (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples), BSB BSB: (although it was not Jesus who baptized, but His disciples),
GLT he left Judea and went back again to Galilee. BSB BSB: He left Judea and returned to Galilee.
GLT Now it was necessary for him to go through Samaria. BSB BSB: Now He had to pass through Samaria.
GLT Then he comes to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the piece of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. BSB BSB: So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
GLT Now the well of Jacob was there. Then Jesus, having grown weary from the journey, was sitting right beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. BSB BSB: Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, weary from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
GLT A woman from Samaria comes to draw water. Jesus says to her,“Give me to drink,” BSB BSB: When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
GLT for his disciples had gone away into the city so that they might buy food. BSB BSB: (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
GLT Then the Samaritan woman says to him,“How do you, being a Jew, ask from me to drink, being a Samaritan woman?”(For Jews do not have dealings with Samaritans.) BSB BSB: “You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
GLT Jesus answered and said to her,“If you had known the gift of God and who is the one saying to you,‘Give me to drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
GLT The woman says to him,“Sir, you do not have a vessel and the well is deep. From where then do you have the living water? BSB BSB: “Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water?
GLT You are not greater, are you, than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, and his sons and his cattle?” BSB BSB: Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock?”
GLT Jesus answered and said to her,“Everyone drinking from this water will thirst again, BSB BSB: Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.
GLT but whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never thirst into eternity. Instead, the water that I will give him will become a fountain of water in him, springing up to eternal life.” BSB BSB: But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
GLT The woman says to him,“Sir, give me this water so that I might not thirst and might not come here to draw{ water}.” BSB BSB: The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
GLT He says to her,“Go, call your husband, and come here.” BSB BSB: Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
GLT The woman answered and said to him,“I do not have a husband.” Jesus says to her,“You have rightly said,‘I do not have a husband,’ BSB BSB: “I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband.
GLT for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband. This you have said is true.” BSB BSB: In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.”
GLT The woman says to him,“Sir, I see that you are a prophet. BSB BSB: “Sir,” the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet.
GLT Jesus says to her,“Believe me, woman, that an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. BSB BSB: “Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
GLT However, an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for indeed the Father seeks such ones worshiping him. BSB BSB: But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.
GLT God is spirit, and it is necessary for the ones worshiping him to worship in spirit and truth.” BSB BSB: God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”
GLT The woman says to him,“I know that Messiah is coming(the one called Christ). When he comes, that one will declare everything to us.” BSB BSB: The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”
GLT Jesus says to her,“I am, the one speaking to you.” BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”
GLT And at this, his disciples came, and they were amazed that he was speaking with a woman. Nevertheless, no one said,“What are you seeking?” or“Why are you speaking with her?” BSB BSB: Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
GLT Then the woman left her water pot and went back into the town and says to the men, BSB BSB: Then the woman left her water jar, went back into the town, and said to the people,
GLT “Come, see a man who told me all things, as much as I have done. This is not the Christ, is it?” BSB BSB: “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
GLT They went out from the town and came to him. BSB BSB: So they left the town and made their way toward Jesus.
GLT In the meantime, the disciples were urging him, saying,“Rabbi, eat.” BSB BSB: Meanwhile the disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
GLT But he said to them,“I have food to eat that you do not know.” BSB BSB: But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
GLT So the disciples said to each other,“No one brought him to eat, did he?” BSB BSB: So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”
GLT Jesus says to them,“My food is that I might do the will of the one having sent me and might complete his work. BSB BSB: Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
GLT Do you not say,‘There are still four months, and the harvest comes’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, for they are already white for harvest! BSB BSB: Do you not say, ‘There are still four months until the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ripe for harvest.
GLT The one harvesting receives wages and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one sowing and the one harvesting might rejoice together. BSB BSB: Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.
GLT For in this the saying is true,‘One is the one sowing, and another, the one harvesting.’ BSB BSB: For in this case the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
GLT I sent you to harvest that on which you have not labored. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” BSB BSB: I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the hard work, and now you have taken up their labor.”
GLT Now many of the Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the report of the woman, testifying,“He told me all things that I have done.” BSB BSB: Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
GLT So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. BSB BSB: So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed two days.
GLT And many more believed because of his word. BSB BSB: And many more believed because of His message.
GLT And they said to the woman,“We no longer believe because of your speech, for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this one is truly the Savior of the world.” BSB BSB: They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.”
GLT Now after the two days, he departed from there into Galilee; BSB BSB: After two days, Jesus left for Galilee.
GLT for Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. BSB BSB: Now He Himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.
GLT When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all{ the things}, as much as he had done in Jerusalem at the festival, for they had also gone to the festival. BSB BSB: Yet when He arrived, the Galileans welcomed Him. They had seen all the great things He had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they had gone there as well.
GLT Then he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine, and there was a certain royal official whose son in Capernaum was ill. BSB BSB: So once again He came to Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
GLT He, having heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, went to him and asked that he would come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. BSB BSB: When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.
GLT Then Jesus said to him,“Unless you would see signs and wonders, you would certainly not believe.” BSB BSB: Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”
GLT The royal official says to him,“Sir, come down before my child dies.” BSB BSB: “Sir,” the official said, “come down before my child dies.”
GLT Jesus says to him,“Go. Your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went away. BSB BSB: “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.” The man took Jesus at His word and departed.
GLT Now while he was going down, his servants met him and reported{ to him}, saying that his son lives. BSB BSB: And while he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.
GLT So he asked from them the hour in which he began to improve. Therefore, they replied to him,“Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” BSB BSB: So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered, and they told him, “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.”
GLT Then the father realized{ that it was at that} hour in which Jesus had said to him,“Your son lives.” And he himself and his whole household believed. BSB BSB: Then the father realized that this was the very hour in which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and all his household believed.
GLT Now Jesus again did this second sign, having come from Judea to Galilee. BSB BSB: This was now the second sign that Jesus performed after coming from Judea into Galilee.
