GLT The oracle of the word of Yahweh to Israel by the hand of Malachi. BSB BSB: This is the burden of the word of the LORD to Israel through Malachi:
GLT but Esau I have hated. I have made his mountains an abandoned devastation, and I left his inheritance for the jackals of the wilderness.” BSB BSB: but Esau I have hated, and I have made his mountains a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.”
GLT If Edom says,“We are beaten down, but we will return and build up the ruins,” Thus Yahweh of hosts will say,“They may build, but I will tear down. Others will call them‘The country of wickedness’ and‘The people toward whom Yahweh is indignant forever.’ BSB BSB: Though Edom may say, “We have been devastated, but we will rebuild the ruins,” this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Land of Wickedness, and a people with whom the LORD is indignant forever.
GLT Your own eyes will see this, and you will say,‘Yahweh is great beyond the borders of Israel.’” BSB BSB: You will see this with your own eyes, and you yourselves will say, ‘The LORD is great—even beyond the borders of Israel.’”
GLT “A son honors his father, and a servant honors his master. If I, then, am a father, where is my honor? If I am a master, where is the reverence for me?” says Yahweh of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name.“But you say,‘How have we despised your name?’ BSB BSB: “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is your fear of Me?” says the LORD of Hosts to you priests who despise My name. “But you ask, ‘How have we despised Your name?’
GLT By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say,‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that the table of Yahweh may be despised. BSB BSB: By presenting defiled food on My altar. But you ask, ‘How have we defiled You?’ By saying that the table of the LORD is contemptible.
GLT When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not evil? When you offer the lame and sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor! Will he accept you or will he lift up your face?” says Yahweh of hosts. BSB BSB: When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is it not wrong? And when you present the lame and sick ones, is it not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you or show you favor?” asks the LORD of Hosts.
GLT Now entreat the face of God, that he may be gracious to us. But Yahweh of hosts says that with such an offering in your hand, would he lift up any of your faces? BSB BSB: “But ask now for God’s favor. Will He be gracious? Since this has come from your hands, will He show you favor?” asks the LORD of Hosts.
GLT “Oh, if only there were one among you who would shut the temple gates, so that you might not light fires on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you,” says Yahweh of hosts,“and I will not accept any offering from your hand. BSB BSB: “Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would no longer kindle useless fires on My altar! I take no pleasure in you,” says the LORD of Hosts, “and I will accept no offering from your hands.
GLT For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations and in every place incense and pure offerings will be offered to my name. For my name will be great among the nations,” says Yahweh of hosts. BSB BSB: For My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place, incense and pure offerings will be presented in My name, because My name will be great among the nations,” says the LORD of Hosts.
GLT “But you are profaning it when you say the table of the Lord is polluted, and that its fruit, its food, is to be despised. BSB BSB: “But you profane it when you say, ‘The table of the Lord is defiled, and as for its fruit, its food is contemptible.’
GLT You also say,‘How tiresome this is,’ and you snort at it,” says Yahweh of hosts.“You bring what has been taken by a wild animal or is lame or sick; and this you bring as your offering. Should I accept this from your hand?” says Yahweh. BSB BSB: You also say: ‘Oh, what a nuisance!’ And you turn up your nose at it,” says the LORD of Hosts. “You bring offerings that are stolen, lame, or sick! Should I accept these from your hands?” asks the LORD.
GLT “May the deceiver be cursed who has a male animal in his flock and vows to give it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is flawed! For I am a great king,” says Yahweh of hosts,“and my name will be feared among the nations.” BSB BSB: “But cursed is the deceiver who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but sacrifices a defective animal to the Lord. For I am a great King,” says the LORD of Hosts, “and My name is to be feared among the nations.
