GLT Then the kingdom of the heavens will be compared to ten virgins who, having taken their lamps, went out to a meeting of the bridegroom. BSB BSB: “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
GLT Now five of them were foolish and five wise. BSB BSB: Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
GLT For the foolish ones, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them. BSB BSB: The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take along any extra oil.
GLT But the wise ones took oil in the containers with their lamps. BSB BSB: But the wise ones took oil in flasks along with their lamps.
GLT Now, the bridegroom delaying, they all became sleepy and were sleeping. BSB BSB: When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
GLT But in the middle of the night there was a cry,‘Behold, the bridegroom! Go out to the meeting.’ BSB BSB: At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
GLT Then all those virgins were awakened and trimmed their lamps. BSB BSB: Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
GLT Now the foolish ones said to the wise ones,‘Give us from your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ BSB BSB: The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
GLT But answering, the wise ones said,‘There will certainly not ever be enough for us and you. Go instead to the ones selling and buy for yourselves.’ BSB BSB: ‘No,’ said the wise ones, ‘or there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
GLT But{ while} they were going away to buy, the bridegroom came, and the prepared ones entered with him into the wedding feast, and the door was shut. BSB BSB: But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.
GLT But afterward the other virgins also come, saying,‘Master, master, open for us!’ BSB BSB: Later the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open the door for us!’
GLT But he, answering, said,‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ BSB BSB: But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’
GLT Therefore, stay alert, for you do not know the day, nor the hour. BSB BSB: Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
GLT For{ it is} like a man going to another country. He called his own slaves and handed over to them his possessions. BSB BSB: For it is just like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted them with his possessions.
GLT And to one he gave five talents, and to one, two, and to one, one— to each according to his own ability. And immediately he went to another country. BSB BSB: To one he gave five talents, to another two talents, and to another one talent—each according to his own ability. And he went on his journey.
GLT { When} he had gone, the one having received the five talents traded with them and gained another five talents. BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents went at once and put them to work and gained five more.
GLT Likewise, the one with the two also gained another two. BSB BSB: Likewise, the one with the two talents gained two more.
GLT But the one having received the one, having gone away, dug in the ground and hid the money of his master. BSB BSB: But the servant who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.
GLT Now after a long time, the master of those slaves comes and settles accounts with them. BSB BSB: After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
GLT And having approached, the one having received the five talents brought another five talents, saying,‘Master, you handed over to me five talents, but behold, I gained five talents.’ BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents came and presented five more. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’
GLT His master said to him,‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful over a few things. I will appoint you over many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’ BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’
GLT The one with the two talents, having also approached, said,‘Master, you handed over to me two talents, but behold, I have gained two talents.’ BSB BSB: The servant who had received the two talents also came and said, ‘Master, you entrusted me with two talents. See, I have gained two more.’
GLT But the one that had received the one talent, having also approached, said,‘Master, I know you, that you are a strict man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter. BSB BSB: Finally, the servant who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Master, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
GLT And having become afraid, having gone away, I hid your talent in the ground. Behold, you have{ what is} yours.’ BSB BSB: So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what belongs to you.’
GLT But answering, his master said to him,‘You wicked and lazy slave! You have known that I reap where I did not sow and harvest where I did not scatter. BSB BSB: ‘You wicked, lazy servant!’ replied his master. ‘You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed.
GLT Therefore, it was necessary for you to have placed my money with the bankers, and having come, I would have received back my money with interest. BSB BSB: Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received it back with interest.
GLT Therefore, take away the talent from him and give it to the one having the ten talents. BSB BSB: Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents.
GLT For to everyone having, it will be given and it will abound. But from the one not having, even what he has will be taken away from him. BSB BSB: For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
GLT And throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and grinding of the teeth.’ BSB BSB: And throw that worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
GLT And before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them from one another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. BSB BSB: All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
GLT And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on his left. BSB BSB: He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.
GLT Then the King will say to the ones at his right,‘Come, you who have been blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. BSB BSB: Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
GLT For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me in; BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in,
GLT I was naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you cared for me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’ BSB BSB: I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’
GLT Then the righteous ones will answer him, saying,‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed{ you}? Or thirsty and give{ you} to drink? BSB BSB: Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?
GLT And when did we see you a stranger and invite{ you} in? Or naked and clothe{ you}? BSB BSB: When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?
GLT And when did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ BSB BSB: When did we see You sick or in prison and visit You?’
GLT And answering, the King will say to them,‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did{ it} for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did{ it} for me.’ BSB BSB: And the King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’
GLT For I was hungry, and you did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and you did not give me to drink; BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink,
GLT I was a stranger, and you did not invite me in; naked, and you did not clothe me; sick and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ BSB BSB: I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after Me.’
GLT Then they will also answer, saying,‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not serve you?’ BSB BSB: And they too will reply, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’
GLT Then he will answer them, saying,‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do{ it} for one of the least of these, you did not do{ it} for me.’ BSB BSB: Then the King will answer, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.’
