1 GLT Then Yahweh spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the wilderness of Sinai on 1 of the second month in the second year of their going out from the land of Egypt, saying, BSB BSB: On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. He said:
2 GLT “Lift up the heads of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of names, every male according to their skulls, BSB BSB: “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.
3 GLT from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war in Israel. You and Aaron must count them according to their armies. BSB BSB: You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions—everyone who can serve in Israel’s army.
4 GLT And with you will be a man, a man of the tribe. He will be the head man of the house of his fathers. BSB BSB: And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you.
5 GLT And these are the names of the men who will stand with you: Of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur, BSB BSB: These are the names of the men who are to assist you: From the tribe of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;
6 GLT of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; BSB BSB: from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;
7 GLT of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; BSB BSB: from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;
8 GLT of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; BSB BSB: from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar;
9 GLT of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; BSB BSB: from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon;
10 GLT of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; BSB BSB: from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;
11 GLT of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; BSB BSB: from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni;
12 GLT of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; BSB BSB: from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;
13 GLT of Asher, Pagiel the son of Okran; BSB BSB: from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran;
14 GLT of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel; BSB BSB: from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel;
15 GLT of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.” BSB BSB: and from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.”
16 GLT These were the called ones of the congregation, the leaders of the tribes of their fathers. They were the heads of the thousands of Israel. BSB BSB: These men were appointed from the congregation; they were the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Israel.
17 GLT And Moses and Aaron took these men, who were designated by names. BSB BSB: So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,
18 GLT And they assembled all the congregation on 1 of the second month. And they declared their ancestry in accordance with their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, according to their skulls. BSB BSB: and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years of age or older,
19 GLT And he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses. BSB BSB: just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai:
20 GLT And the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, according to their skulls, every male from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
21 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Reuben were 46, 500. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Reuben numbered 46,500.
22 GLT Of the sons of Simeon, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, his counted ones by the number of the names, according to their skulls, every male from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Simeon, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
23 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Simeon were 59, 300. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Simeon numbered 59,300.
24 GLT Of the sons of Gad, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Gad, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
25 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Gad were 45, 650. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Gad numbered 45,650.
26 GLT Of the sons of Judah, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Judah, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
27 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Judah were 74, 600. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Judah numbered 74,600.
28 GLT Of the sons of Issachar, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Issachar, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
29 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Issachar were 54, 400. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Issachar numbered 54,400.
30 GLT Of the sons of Zebulun, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Zebulun, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
31 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Zebulun were 57, 400. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Zebulun numbered 57,400.
32 GLT Of the sons of Joseph: of the sons of Ephraim, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Joseph: From the sons of Ephraim, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
33 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Ephraim were 40, 500. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500.
34 GLT Of the sons of Manasseh, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: And from the sons of Manasseh, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
35 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Manasseh were 32, 200. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Manasseh numbered 32,200.
36 GLT Of the sons of Benjamin, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Benjamin, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
37 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Benjamin were 35, 400. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Benjamin numbered 35,400.
38 GLT Of the sons of Dan, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Dan, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
39 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Dan were 62, 700. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Dan numbered 62,700.
40 GLT Of the sons of Asher, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Asher, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
41 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Asher were 41, 500. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Asher numbered 41,500.
42 GLT Of the sons of Naphtali, their generations according to their clans, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of the names, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war, BSB BSB: From the sons of Naphtali, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,
43 GLT their counted ones of the tribe of Naphtali were 53, 400. BSB BSB: those registered to the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400.
44 GLT These were the counted ones, whom Moses and Aaron had counted, and the leaders of Israel, 12 men, they were one man for the house of his fathers. BSB BSB: These were the men numbered by Moses and Aaron, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family.
45 GLT And they were all the counted ones of the sons of Israel according to the house of their fathers, from a son of 20 years and upward, every one who goes out to war in Israel. BSB BSB: So all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.
46 GLT And all the counted ones were 603, 550. BSB BSB: And all those counted totaled 603,550.
47 GLT And the Levites according to the tribe of their fathers were not counted in the midst of them. BSB BSB: The Levites, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers.
48 GLT And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: For the LORD had said to Moses:
49 GLT “Only the tribe of Levi you must not count, and you must not lift up their heads in the midst of the sons of Israel. BSB BSB: “Do not number the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites.
50 GLT And you, appoint the Levites over the dwelling of the testimony and over all its vessels and over all that belongs to it. They themselves must carry the dwelling and all its vessels, and they themselves must serve it, and they must camp around the dwelling. BSB BSB: Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.
51 GLT And when the dwelling sets out, the Levites must take it down, and when the dwelling camps, the Levites must raise it up. And the stranger who comes near must be put to death. BSB BSB: Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.
52 GLT And the sons of Israel will camp, a man at his camp and a man at his banner, according to their armies. BSB BSB: The Israelites are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own standard.
53 GLT And the Levites must camp around the dwelling of the testimony, and wrath will not be upon the congregation of the sons of Israel. And the Levites must keep the keeping of the dwelling of the testimony.” BSB BSB: But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Israel. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.”
54 GLT And the sons of Israel did according to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they did. BSB BSB: Thus the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
