Numbers 31 (GLT)

1And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,And the LORD said to Moses,

2“Take vengeance, the vengeance of the sons of Israel, from with the Midianites. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people.”“Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”

3And Moses spoke to the people, saying,“Equip yourselves, some of the men with you, for the war. And they will be against Midian to give the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.So Moses told the people, “Arm some of your men for war, that they may go against the Midianites and execute the LORD’s vengeance on them.

4You shall send to the war for all the tribes of Israel, a thousand for a tribe, a thousand for a tribe.”Send into battle a thousand men from each tribe of Israel.”

5And a thousand for a tribe were provided from the thousands of Israel, 12, 000 equipped for battle.So a thousand men were recruited from each tribe of Israel—twelve thousand armed for war.

6And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand for a tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest to the war. And the vessels of holiness and the blasting trumpets were in his hand.And Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into battle, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, who took with him the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.

7And they waged war against Midian, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses, and they slew every male.Then they waged war against Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.

8And they slew the kings of Midian with their pierced ones: Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian; and they slew Balaam the son of Beor by the sword.Among the slain were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

9And the sons of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their children, and they plundered all their animals and all their livestock and all their wealth.The Israelites captured the Midianite women and their children, and they plundered all their herds, flocks, and goods.

10And they burned with the fire all their cities with their dwellings and all their encampments.Then they burned all the cities where the Midianites had lived, as well as all their encampments,

11And they took all the spoil and all the booty of human and of animal.and carried away all the plunder and spoils, both people and animals.

12And they brought to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the congregation of the sons of Israel, the captives and the booty and the spoil to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are beside the Jordan at Jericho.They brought the captives, spoils, and plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of Israel at the camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.

13And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the congregation went out to meet them at the outside of the camp.And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp.

14And Moses was furious with the appointed ones of the army, the leaders of the thousands and the leaders of the hundreds, the ones coming from the battle of the war.But Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who were returning from the battle.

15And Moses said to them,“Have you let every woman live?“Have you spared all the women?” he asked them.

16Look, these were by the word of Balaam for the sons of Israel to commit unfaithfulness against Yahweh concerning the matter of Peor, and the plague was among the congregation of Yahweh.“Look, these women caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to turn unfaithfully against the LORD at Peor, so that the plague struck the congregation of the LORD.

17And now, slay every male among the children and slay every woman who has known a man by the bed of a male.So now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,

18And keep alive for yourselves every child among the women who has not known the bed of a male.but spare for yourselves every girl who has never had relations with a man.

19And you, camp outside of the camp seven days, all who have slain a person and all who have touched a pierced one. Purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives,All of you who have killed a person or touched the dead are to remain outside the camp for seven days. On the third day and the seventh day you are to purify both yourselves and your captives.

20and you shall purify every garment and every vessel of skin and every work of goats and every vessel of wood.”And purify every garment and leather good, everything made of goat’s hair, and every article of wood.”

21And Eleazar the priest said to the men of the army who had gone to the battle,“This is a statute of the law that Yahweh has commanded Moses:Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses:

22Only the gold and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,Only the gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead—

23every thing that can come through the fire you shall pass through the fire, and it will become clean. However, it must be purified with the water of purification, and all that can not come through the fire you shall pass through the water.everything that can withstand the fire—must be put through the fire, and it will be clean. But it must still be purified with the water of purification. And everything that cannot withstand the fire must pass through the water.

24And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and you will be clean, and afterward you may enter into the camp.”On the seventh day you are to wash your clothes, and you will be clean. After that you may enter the camp.”

25And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,The LORD said to Moses,

26“Lift up the head of the booty of the captives, of human and of animal, you and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers of the congregation.“You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the congregation are to take a count of what was captured, both of man and beast.

27And you shall divide the booty between the wielders of the war who went out to the battle and all the congregation.Then divide the captives between the troops who went out to battle and the rest of the congregation.

28And you shall raise a tax for Yahweh from with the men of the war who went out to the battle, one life from 500, from human and from cattle and from the donkeys and from the flock.Set aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the soldiers who went into battle: one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, or sheep.

29You shall take from half of them and give the contribution of Yahweh to Eleazar the priest.Take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as an offering to the LORD.

30And from the half of the sons of Israel you shall take one taken from the 50, from human, from cattle, from the donkeys and from the flock, from every animal, and you shall give them to the Levites, the keepers of the keeping of the dwelling of Yahweh.”From the Israelites’ half, take one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, or other animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.”

31And Moses and Eleazar the priest did just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD had commanded Moses,

32And the booty, the remainder of the plunder that the people of the army plundered, was 675, 000 sheep,and this plunder remained from the spoils the soldiers had taken: 675,000 sheep,

33and 72, 000 cattle,72,000 cattle,

34and 61, 000 donkeys,61,000 donkeys,

35and human lives, from the women who had not known the bed of a male, every life, 32, 000.and 32,000 women who had not slept with a man.

36And the half of the portion of the ones who went out with the army: the number of the sheep was 337, 500.This was the half portion for those who had gone to war: 337,500 sheep,

37And the tax for Yahweh from the flock was 675.including a tribute to the LORD of 675,

38And the cattle were 36, 000 and their tax for Yahweh was 72.36,000 cattle, including a tribute to the LORD of 72,

39And the donkeys were 30, 500, and their tax for Yahweh was 61.30,500 donkeys, including a tribute to the LORD of 61,

40And the human lives were 16, 000, and their tax for Yahweh was 32 lives.and 16,000 people, including a tribute to the LORD of 32.

41And Moses gave the tax of the contribution of Yahweh to Eleazar the priest, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as an offering for the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

42And from the half of the sons of Israel whom Moses had divided from the men who waged war,From the Israelites’ half, which Moses had set apart from the men who had gone to war,

43and the half of the congregation from the flock was 337, 500,this half belonged to the congregation: 337,500 sheep,

44and 36, 000 cattle,36,000 cattle,

45and 30, 500 donkeys,30,500 donkeys,

46and 16, 000 human lives.and 16,000 people.

47And Moses took from the half of the sons of Israel the taken, one from the 50, from human and from animal, and he gave them to the Levites, the keepers of the keeping of the dwelling of Yahweh, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.From the Israelites’ half, Moses took one out of every fifty persons and animals and gave them to the Levites who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded him.

48And the appointed ones who were for the thousands of the army, the leaders of the thousands and the leaders of the hundreds, came near to Moses.Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and of hundreds—approached Moses

49And they said to Moses,“Your servants have lifted up the heads of the men of the war who were in our hand, and not a man from us is missing.and said, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one of us is missing.

50And we have offered the offering of Yahweh, a man what he found of the objects of gold, armlet, and bracelet, signet ring, earring, and ornament, to make atonement for our lives before the face of Yahweh.”So we have brought to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man acquired—armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”

51And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from with them, every object of craft.So Moses and Eleazar the priest received from them all the articles made out of gold.

52And all the gold of the contribution which they raised to Yahweh from with the leaders of the thousands and from with the leaders of the hundreds was 16, 750 shekels.All the gold that the commanders of thousands and of hundreds presented as an offering to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels.

53The men of the army had plundered, a man for himself.Each of the soldiers had taken plunder for himself.

54And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from with the leaders of the thousands and the hundreds, and they brought it to the tent of meeting, a memorial for the sons of Israel before the face of Yahweh.And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
