1У серебра есть источник, у золота есть место, где его плавят.“Surely there is a mine for silver and a place where gold is refined.

2Железо извлекают из земли, из камня выплавляют медь.Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore.

3Человек устанавливает границу тьме, тщательно ищет камень во мраке и смертной тени.Man puts an end to the darkness; he probes the farthest recesses for ore in deepest darkness.

4Выкапывают рудокопный колодец в забытых ногой местах, спускаются вглубь, висят и раскачиваются вдали от людей.Far from human habitation he cuts a shaft in places forgotten by the foot of man. Far from men he dangles and sways.

5Земля, на которой вырастает хлеб, изрыта внутри, словно огнём.Food may come from the earth, but from below it is transformed as by fire.

6Её камни— место сапфира, и в ней песчинки золота.Its rocks are the source of sapphires, containing flecks of gold.

7Хищная птица не знает туда пути, и глаз коршуна не видел его.No bird of prey knows that path; no falcon’s eye has seen it.

8Не топтали его звери и не ходил по нему шакал.Proud beasts have never trodden it; no lion has ever prowled over it.

9Он кладёт свою руку на гранит, с корнем опрокидывает горы.The miner strikes the flint; he overturns mountains at their base.

10В скалах прорубает каналы, его глаз видит всё драгоценное.He hews out channels in the rocks, and his eyes spot every treasure.

11Останавливает течение потоков, тайное выносит на свет.He stops up the sources of the streams to bring what is hidden to light.

12Но где приобретается мудрость? И где место разума?But where can wisdom be found, and where does understanding dwell?

13Человек не знает её цены, она не приобретается на земле живых.No man can know its value, nor is it found in the land of the living.

14Бездна говорит: "Она не во мне", море говорит:" Она не у меня".The ocean depths say, ‘It is not in me,’ while the sea declares, ‘It is not with me.’

15Она не даётся за золото и не приобретается за вес серебра.It cannot be bought with gold, nor can its price be weighed out in silver.

16Она не оценивается ни офирским золотом, ни драгоценным ониксом, ни сапфиром.It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or sapphire.

17С ней не сравнятся золото и кристалл, и её не выменяешь на сосуды из чистого золота.Neither gold nor crystal can compare to it, nor jewels of fine gold be exchanged for it.

18А о кораллах и жемчуге нечего и упоминать, приобретение мудрости выше рубинов.Coral and quartz are unworthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.

19С ней не сравнить ефиопский топаз, её не оценить чистым золотом.Topaz from Cush cannot compare to it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.

20Откуда же приходит мудрость? И где место разума?From where, then, does wisdom come, and where does understanding dwell?

21Она скрыта от глаз всего живущего, спрятана от небесных птиц.It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing and concealed from the birds of the air.

22Аваддон и смерть говорят: "Мы только слышали о ней своими ушами".Abaddon and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor about it.’

23Бог знает её путь, Он знает её место.But God understands its way, and He knows its place.

24Ведь Он видит до краёв земли, видит под всем небом.For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.

25Когда Он взвешивал ветры, располагал воду по мере,When God fixed the weight of the wind and measured out the waters,

26когда назначал устав дождю и путь для громоносной молнии—when He set a limit for the rain and a path for the thunderbolt,

27тогда Он видел её и показал, приготовил и ещё испытал её.then He looked at wisdom and appraised it; He established it and searched it out.

28И сказал человеку: "Страх Господа— истинная мудрость, и удаление от зла— разум"».And He said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”
