1Авимелех, сын Иероваала, пришёл в Сихем к братьям своей матери и говорил им и всему племени отца своей матери:Now Abimelech son of Jerubbaal went to his mother’s brothers at Shechem and said to them and to all the clan of his mother,

2«Скажите всем жителям Сихема: "Что лучше для вас, чтобы вами правили все семьдесят сыновей Иероваала, или чтобы правил один?" И помните, что я— кость ваша и плоть ваша».“Please ask all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”

3Его братья по матери рассказали всё о нём жителям Сихема. И склонились их сердца к Авимелеху, потому что они говорили: «Он наш брат».And when his mother’s brothers spoke all these words about him in the presence of all the leaders of Shechem, their hearts were inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”

4Они дали ему семьдесят шекелей серебра из дома Ваал-Верифа, и Авимелех нанял на них праздных и своевольных людей, которые пошли за ним.So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-berith, with which Abimelech hired some worthless and reckless men to follow him.

5Он пришёл в Офру, в дом своего отца, и на одном камне убил своих братьев, семьдесят сыновей Иероваала. Остался только Иофам, младший сын Иероваала, потому что спрятался.He went to his father’s house in Ophrah, and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerubbaal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, survived, because he hid himself.

6Все жители Сихема и весь дом Милло пошли и собрались у дуба, который возле Сихема, и сделали Авимелеха царём.Then all the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo gathered beside the oak at the pillar in Shechem and proceeded to make Abimelech their king.

7Когда рассказали об этом Иофаму, он пошёл, встал на вершине горы Гаризим и, возвысив свой голос, кричал им: «Послушайте меня, жители Сихема, и Бог послушает вас!When this was reported to Jotham, he climbed to the top of Mount Gerizim, raised his voice, and cried out: “Listen to me, O leaders of Shechem, and may God listen to you.

8Пошли некогда деревья помазать над собой царя и сказали маслине: "Царствуй над нами".One day the trees set out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’

9Маслина сказала им: "Оставлю ли я моё масло, которым чествуют богов и людей, и пойду ли бродить по деревьям?"But the olive tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my oil that honors both God and man, to hold sway over the trees?’

10И сказали деревья смоковнице: "Иди ты царствуй над нами".Then the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and reign over us.’

11Смоковница сказала им: "Оставлю ли я мою сладость и мой хороший плод и пойду ли бродить по деревьям?"But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my sweetness and my good fruit, to hold sway over the trees?’

12И сказали деревья виноградной лозе: "Иди ты царствуй над нами".Then the trees said to the grapevine, ‘Come and reign over us.’

13Виноградная лоза сказала им: "Оставлю ли я мой сок, который веселит богов и людей, и пойду ли бродить по деревьям?"But the grapevine replied, ‘Should I stop giving my wine that cheers both God and man, to hold sway over the trees?’

14Наконец все деревья сказали терновнику: "Иди ты царствуй над нами".Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and reign over us.’

15Терновник сказал деревьям: "Если вы и в правду ставите меня царём над собой, то идите, укройтесь под моей тенью. Если же нет, то выйдет огонь из терновника и уничтожит ливанские кедры".But the thornbush replied, ‘If you really are anointing me as king over you, come and find refuge in my shade. But if not, may fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’

16Итак, смотрите, верно и искренно ли вы поступили, поставив Авимелеха царём? И хорошо ли вы поступили с Иероваалом и его домом? В соответствии ли с его делами вы поступили?Now if you have acted faithfully and honestly in making Abimelech king, if you have done well by Jerubbaal and his family, and if you have done to him as he deserves—

17Мой отец сражался за вас, рисковал своей жизнью и избавил вас от руки мадианитян.for my father fought for you and risked his life to deliver you from the hand of Midian,

18А вы теперь восстали против дома моего отца, на одном камне убили семьдесят его сыновей и поставили царём над жителями Сихема Авимелеха, сына его рабыни, потому что он ваш брат.but you have risen up against my father’s house this day and killed his seventy sons on a single stone, and you have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the leaders of Shechem because he is your brother—

19Если вы сейчас верно и искренно поступили с Иероваалом и его домом, то радуйтесь за Авимелеха, и пусть он радуется за вас.if you have acted faithfully and honestly toward Jerubbaal and his house this day, then may you rejoice in Abimelech, and he in you.

20Если же нет, то пусть выйдет огонь от Авимелеха и уничтожит жителей Сихема и весь дом Милло, и пусть выйдет огонь от жителей Сихема и от дома Милло и уничтожит Авимелеха».But if not, may fire come from Abimelech and consume the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo, and may fire come from the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo and consume Abimelech.”

21И побежал Иофам, убежал и пошёл в Беэр, и жил там, укрываясь от своего брата Авимелеха.Then Jotham ran away, escaping to Beer, and he lived there for fear of his brother Abimelech.

22Авимелех царствовал над Израилем три года.After Abimelech had reigned over Israel for three years,

23Бог послал злого духа между Авимелехом и жителями Сихема, и жители Сихема не стали покоряться Авимелеху,God sent a spirit of animosity between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem and caused them to treat Abimelech deceitfully,

24чтобы таким образом совершилась месть за семьдесят сыновей Иероваала, и их кровь обратилась на Авимелеха, их брата, который убил их, и на жителях Сихема, которые подкрепили его руки, чтобы убить своих братьев.in order that the crime against the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come to justice and their blood be avenged on their brother Abimelech and on the leaders of Shechem, who had helped him murder his brothers.

25Жители Сихема посадили против него в засаду на вершинах гор людей, которые грабили каждого проходящего мимо них по дороге. Об этом донесли Авимелеху.The leaders of Shechem set up an ambush against Abimelech on the hilltops, and they robbed all who passed by them on the road. So this was reported to Abimelech.

26Пришёл Гаал, сын Еведа, со своими братьями в Сихем. Они ходили по Сихему, и жители Сихема доверились ему.Meanwhile, Gaal son of Ebed came with his brothers and crossed into Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem put their confidence in him.

27Они вышли в поле, собирали свой виноград, давили в давильнях и делали праздники. Они ходили в дом своего бога, ели, пили и проклинали Авимелеха.And after they had gone out into the fields, gathered grapes from their vineyards, and trodden them, they held a festival and went into the house of their god; and as they ate and drank, they cursed Abimelech.

28Гаал, сын Еведа, говорил: «Кто Авимелех и что Сихем, чтобы нам служить ему? Не сын ли он Иероваала, и не Зевул ли главный его начальник? Служите лучше потомкам Еммора, отца Сихема, а для чего нам служить ему?Then Gaal son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? You are to serve the men of Hamor, the father of Shechem. Why should we serve Abimelech?

29Если бы кто отдал этот народ в мои руки, я прогнал бы Авимелеха». И сказано было Авимелеху: «Умножь своё войско и выходи».If only this people were under my authority, I would remove Abimelech; I would say to him, ‘Muster your army and come out!’”

30Зевул, начальник города, услышал слова Гаала, сына Еведа, и разгневался.When Zebul the governor of the city heard the words of Gaal son of Ebed, he burned with anger.

31Он хитрым образом отправил посланников к Авимелеху, чтобы сказать: «Вот, Гаал, сын Еведа, и его братья пришли в Сихем и возмущают против тебя город.So he covertly sent messengers to Abimelech to say, “Look, Gaal son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you.

32Итак, встань ночью, ты и народ, находящийся с тобой, и поставь засаду в поле.Now then, tonight you and the people with you are to come and lie in wait in the fields.

33Рано утром на восходе солнца встань и напади на город. И когда он и его народ, который с ним, выйдут к тебе, тогда делай с ними то, что может твоя рука».And in the morning at sunrise, get up and advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, do to them whatever you are able.”

34Авимелех и весь народ, находившийся с ним, встали ночью и поставили в засаду у Сихема четыре отряда.So Abimelech and all his troops set out by night and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies.

35Гаал, сын Еведа, вышел и встал у городских ворот. И поднялся из засады Авимелех и народ, который был с ним.Now Gaal son of Ebed went out and stood at the entrance of the city gate just as Abimelech and his men came out from their hiding places.

36Гаал, увидев народ, сказал Зевулу: «С вершины гор спускается народ». А Зевул сказал ему: «Тень от гор кажется тебе людьми».When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountains!” But Zebul replied, “The shadows of the mountains look like men to you.”

37Гаал опять сказал: «С возвышенности спускается народ, и один отряд идёт от дуба Меонним».Then Gaal spoke up again, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming by way of the Diviners’ Oak.”

38Зевул ответил ему: «Где твои слова, которые ты говорил: "Кто Авимелех, чтобы мы стали ему служить?" Это тот народ, которым ты пренебрегал. Теперь выходи и сразись с ним».“Where is your gloating now?” Zebul replied. “You said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Are these not the people you ridiculed? Go out now and fight them!”

39Гаал пошёл впереди жителей Сихема и сразился с Авимелехом.So Gaal went out before the leaders of Shechem and fought against Abimelech,

40Авимелех погнался за ним, и он побежал от него, и много пало убитых до самых ворот города.but Abimelech pursued him, and Gaal fled before him. And many Shechemites fell wounded all the way to the entrance of the gate.

41Авимелех остался в Аруме, а Гаала и его братьев выгнал Зевул, чтобы они не жили в Сихеме.Abimelech stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his brothers out of Shechem.

42На другой день вышел народ в поле, и донесли об этом Авимелеху.The next day the people of Shechem went out into the fields, and this was reported to Abimelech.

43Он взял свой народ, разделил его на три отряда и поставил засаду в поле. И, увидев, что народ вышел из города, напал на них и побил их.So he took his men, divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose up against them and attacked them.

44Авимелех и отряды, которые были с ним, устремились к городским воротам и встали там. Другие два отряда нападали на всех, кто был в поле, и убивали их.Then Abimelech and the companies with him rushed forward and took their stand at the entrance of the city gate. The other two companies rushed against all who were in the fields and struck them down.

45Авимелех сражался с городом весь тот день. Он взял город и побил народ, который был в нём. Разрушил город и засыпал его солью.And all that day Abimelech fought against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he demolished the city and sowed it with salt.

46Все, кто был в сихемской башне, услышав об этом, ушли в башню дома Эль-Верифа.On hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of Shechem entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.

47Авимелеху донесли, что собрались там все, кто был в сихемской башне.And when Abimelech was told that all the leaders in the tower of Shechem were gathered there,

48Авимелех и весь народ, который был с ним, пошли на гору Селмон. Авимелех взял с собой топоры, нарубил древесных веток, положил на свои плечи и сказал народу, который был с ним: «Вы видели, что я делал? Скорее делайте то же, что я».he and all his men went up to Mount Zalmon. Abimelech took his axe in his hand and cut a branch from the trees, which he lifted to his shoulder, saying to his men, “Hurry and do what you have seen me do.”

49Каждый из народа нарубил веток и пошёл за Авимелехом. Они положили их к башне и сожгли башню огнём. Все, кто был в сихемской башне, около тысячи мужчин и женщин, погибли.So each man also cut his own branch and followed Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them, killing everyone in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women.

50Потом Авимелех пошёл в Тевец, осадил Тевец и захватил его.Then Abimelech went to Thebez, encamped against it, and captured it.

51Среди города была крепкая башня. Туда убежали все мужчины и женщины. Все жители города заперлись и поднялись на кровлю башни.But there was a strong tower inside the city, and all the men, women, and leaders of the city fled there. They locked themselves in and went up to the roof of the tower.

52Авимелех пришёл к башне, окружил её и подошёл к дверям башни, чтобы сжечь её огнем.When Abimelech came to attack the tower, he approached its entrance to set it on fire.

53Тогда одна женщина бросила обломок жернова Авимелеху на голову и проломила ему череп.But a woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, crushing his skull.

54Авимелех поспешно позвал юношу, своего оруженосца, и сказал ему: «Обнажи твой меч и убей меня, чтобы не сказали обо мне: "Его убила женщина"». Юноша пронзил его, и он умер.He quickly called his armor-bearer, saying, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So Abimelech’s armor-bearer ran his sword through him, and he died.

55Израильтяне, увидев, что Авимелех умер, пошли каждый в своё место.And when the Israelites saw that Abimelech was dead, they all went home.

56Так воздал Бог Авимелеху за зло, которое он сделал своему отцу, убив семьдесят своих братьев.In this way God repaid the wickedness that Abimelech had done to his father in murdering his seventy brothers.

57И всё зло жителей Сихема обратил Бог на их голову, и постигло их проклятие Иофама, сына Иероваала.And God also brought all the wickedness of the men of Shechem back upon their own heads. So the curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
