The Offering of Isaac (John 3:1–21)
RV And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son, whom thou lovest, even Isaac, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. BSB BSB: “Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.” 3 RV And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. BSB BSB: So Abraham got up early the next morning, saddled his donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated.
RV On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. BSB BSB: On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
RV And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold, the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? BSB BSB: Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
RV And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. BSB BSB: When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, atop the wood.
RV And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. BSB BSB: Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
The LORD Provides the Sacrifice 12 RV And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from me. BSB BSB: “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”
RV And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. BSB BSB: Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram in a thicket, caught by its horns. So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
RV And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be provided. BSB BSB: And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
RV And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham a second time out of heaven, BSB BSB: And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time,
RV and said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: BSB BSB: saying, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your only son,
RV that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; BSB BSB: I will surely bless you, and I will multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies.
RV and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. BSB BSB: And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
RV So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba. BSB BSB: Abraham went back to his servants, and they got up and set out together for Beersheba. And Abraham settled in Beersheba.
The Sons of Nahor 20 RV And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she also hath borne children unto thy brother Nahor; BSB BSB: Some time later, Abraham was told, “Milcah has also borne sons to your brother Nahor:
RV Uz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram; BSB BSB: Uz the firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),
RV and Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel. BSB BSB: Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”
RV And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight did Milcah bear to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. BSB BSB: And Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.
RV And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she also bare Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah. BSB BSB: Moreover, Nahor’s concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
