The Sabbath Rest (Genesis 2:1–3; Exodus 16:22–30)
RV Let us fear therefore, lest haply, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it. BSB BSB: Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it.
RV For indeed we have had good tidings preached unto us, even as also they: but the word of hearing did not profit them, because they were not united by faith with them that heard. BSB BSB: For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.
RV For we which have believed do enter into that rest; even as he hath said, As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. BSB BSB: Now we who have believed enter that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said: “So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’” And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world.
RV For he hath said somewhere of the seventh day on this wise, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works; BSB BSB: For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all His works.”
RV and in this place again, They shall not enter into my rest. BSB BSB: And again, as He says in the passage above: “They shall never enter My rest.”
RV Seeing therefore it remaineth that some should enter thereinto, and they to whom the good tidings were before preached failed to enter in because of disobedience, BSB BSB: Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
RV he again defineth a certain day, saying in David, after so long a time, Today, as it hath been before said, Today if ye shall hear his voice, Harden not your hearts. BSB BSB: God again designated a certain day as “Today,” when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
RV For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day. BSB BSB: For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
RV There remaineth therefore a sabbath rest for the people of God. BSB BSB: There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
RV For he that is entered into his rest hath himself also rested from his works, as God did from his. BSB BSB: For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His.
RV Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, that no man fall after the same example of disobedience. BSB BSB: Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience.
The Living Word (2 Timothy 3:10–17)
RV For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. BSB BSB: For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
RV And there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do. BSB BSB: Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
RV Having then a great high priest, who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. BSB BSB: Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess.
RV Let us therefore draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace to help us in time of need. BSB BSB: Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
