Job’s Character and Wealth (James 5:7–12)
RV There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. BSB BSB: There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. And this man was blameless and upright, fearing God and shunning evil.
RV And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. BSB BSB: He had seven sons and three daughters,
RV His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east. BSB BSB: and he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man of all the people of the East.
RV And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. BSB BSB: Job’s sons would take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
RV And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burn offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually. BSB BSB: And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice.
Satan’s First Attack 6 RV Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. BSB BSB: One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.
RV And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. BSB BSB: “Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan. “From roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”
RV And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil. BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil.”
RV Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? BSB BSB: Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing?
RV Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. BSB BSB: Have You not placed a hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
RV But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face. BSB BSB: But stretch out Your hand and strike all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”
RV And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. BSB BSB: “Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
