Lands Yet Unconquered (Judges 1:1–7)
1 RV Now Joshua was old and well stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and well stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed. BSB BSB: Now Joshua was old and well along in years, and the LORD said to him, “You are old and well along in years, but very much of the land remains to be possessed.
2 RV This is the land that yet remaineth: all the regions of the Philistines, and all the Geshurites; BSB BSB: This is the land that remains: All the territory of the Philistines and the Geshurites,
3 RV from the Shihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the border of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanites: the five lords of the Philistines. the Gazites, and the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avvim, BSB BSB: from the Shihor east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron on the north (considered to be Canaanite territory)—that of the five Philistine rulers of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, as well as that of the Avvites; 4 RV on the south: all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongeth to the Zidonians, unto Aphek, to the border of the Amorites: BSB BSB: to the south, all the land of the Canaanites, from Mearah of the Sidonians to Aphek, as far as the border of the Amorites;
5 RV and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baal-gad under mount Hermon unto the entering in of Hamath: BSB BSB: the land of the Gebalites; and all Lebanon to the east, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath.
6 RV all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephoth-maim, even all the Zidonians; them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only allot thou it unto Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee. BSB BSB: All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim—all the Sidonians—I Myself will drive out before the Israelites. Be sure to divide it by lot as an inheritance to Israel, as I have commanded you.
7 RV Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh. BSB BSB: Now therefore divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”
The Inheritance East of the Jordan (Numbers 32:1–42; Deuteronomy 3:12–22)
8 RV With him the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them; BSB BSB: The other half of Manasseh, along with the Reubenites and Gadites, had received the inheritance Moses had given them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had assigned to them:
9 RV from Aroer, that is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon; BSB BSB: The area from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, the whole plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon,
10 RV and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon; BSB BSB: and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the Ammonites;
11 RV and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salecah; BSB BSB: also Gilead and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, all of Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah—
12 RV all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (the same was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); for these did Moses smite, and drave them out. BSB BSB: the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei and had remained as a remnant of the Rephaim. Moses had struck them down and dispossessed them,
13 RV Nevertheless the children of Israel drave not out the Geshurites, nor the Maacathites: but Geshur and Maacath dwelt in the midst of Israel, unto this day. BSB BSB: but the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites. So Geshur and Maacath dwell among the Israelites to this day.
14 RV Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the offerings of the LORD, the God of Israel, made by fire are his inheritance, as he spake unto him. BSB BSB: To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The food offerings to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
Reuben’s Inheritance 15 RV And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their families. BSB BSB: This is what Moses had given to the clans of the tribe of Reuben:
16 RV And their border was from Aroer, that is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain by Medeba; BSB BSB: The territory from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, to the whole plateau beyond Medeba,
17 RV Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon; BSB BSB: to Heshbon and all its cities on the plateau, including Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,
18 RV and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath; BSB BSB: Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
19 RV and Kiriathaim, and Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar in the mount of the valley; BSB BSB: Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,
20 RV and Beth-peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth; BSB BSB: Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth—
21 RV and all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, that dwelt in the land. BSB BSB: all the cities of the plateau and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon until Moses killed him and the chiefs of Midian (Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba), the princes of Sihon who lived in the land.
22 RV Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among the rest of their slain. BSB BSB: The Israelites also killed the diviner Balaam son of Beor along with the others they put to the sword.
23 RV And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof . This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and the villages thereof. BSB BSB: And the border of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the clans of the Reubenites, including the cities and villages.
Gad’s Inheritance 24 RV And Moses gave unto the tribe of Gad, unto the children of Gad, according to their families. BSB BSB: This is what Moses had given to the clans of the tribe of Gad:
25 RV And their border was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah; BSB BSB: The territory of Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;
26 RV and from Heshbon unto Ramath-mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir; BSB BSB: the territory from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;
27 RV and in the valley, Beth-haram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and the border thereof , unto the uttermost part of the sea of Chinnereth beyond Jordan eastward. BSB BSB: and in the valley, Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, with the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon (the territory on the east side of the Jordan up to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth).
28 RV This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and the villages thereof. BSB BSB: This was the inheritance of the clans of the Gadites, including the cities and villages.
Manasseh’s Eastern Inheritance 29 RV And Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of Manasseh: and it was for the half tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families. BSB BSB: This is what Moses had given to the clans of the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the tribe of the descendants of Manasseh:
30 RV And their border was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities: BSB BSB: The territory from Mahanaim through all Bashan—all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, including all the towns of Jair that are in Bashan, sixty cities;
31 RV and half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even for the half of the children of Machir according to their families. BSB BSB: half of Gilead; and Ashtaroth and Edrei, the royal cities of Og in Bashan. All this was for the clans of the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh, that is, half of the descendants of Machir.
32 RV These are the inheritances which Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho, eastward. BSB BSB: These were the portions Moses had given them on the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan, east of Jericho.
33 RV But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave none inheritance: the LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he spake unto them. BSB BSB: To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
