2 SANTHA ตทนุสารโต'เนฺยปิ พหวสฺตทฺวฺฤตฺตานฺตํ รจยิตุํ ปฺรวฺฤตฺตา:ฯ BSB BSB: just as they were handed down to us by the initial eyewitnesses and servants of the word.
3 SANTHA อเตอว เห มหามหิมถิยผิลฺ ตฺวํ ยา ยา: กถา อศิกฺษฺยถาสฺตาสำ ทฺฤฒปฺรมาณานิ ยถา ปฺราปฺโนษิ BSB BSB: Therefore, having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
4 SANTHA ตทรฺถํ ปฺรถมมารภฺย ตานิ สรฺวฺวาณิ ชฺญาตฺวาหมปิ อนุกฺรมาตฺ สรฺวฺววฺฤตฺตานฺตานฺ ตุภฺยํ เลขิตุํ มติมการฺษมฺฯ BSB BSB: so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
6 SANTHA ตสฺย ชายา ทฺวาวิเมา นิรฺโทเษา ปฺรโภ: สรฺวฺวาชฺญา วฺยวสฺถาศฺจ สํมนฺย อีศฺวรทฺฤษฺเฏา ธารฺมฺมิกาวาสฺตามฺฯ BSB BSB: Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and decrees of the Lord.
7 SANTHA ตโย: สนฺตาน เอโกปิ นาสีตฺ, ยต อิลีเศวา พนฺธฺยา เตา ทฺวาเวว วฺฤทฺธาวภวตามฺฯ BSB BSB: But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well along in years.
8 SANTHA ยทา สฺวปรฺยฺยานุกฺรเมณ สิขริย อีศฺวาสฺย สมกฺษํ ยาชกียํ กรฺมฺม กโรติ BSB BSB: One day while Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,
9 SANTHA ตทา ยชฺญสฺย ทินปริปายฺยา ปรเมศฺวรสฺย มนฺทิเร ปฺรเวศกาเล ธูปชฺวาลนํ กรฺมฺม ตสฺย กรณียมาสีตฺฯ BSB BSB: he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
10 SANTHA ตทฺธูปชฺวาลนกาเล โลกนิวเห ปฺรารฺถนำ กรฺตุํ พหิสฺติษฺฐติ BSB BSB: And at the hour of the incense offering, the whole congregation was praying outside.
11 SANTHA สติ สิขริโย ยสฺยำ เวทฺยำ ธูปํ ชฺวาลยติ ตทฺทกฺษิณปารฺเศฺว ปรเมศฺวรสฺย ทูต เอก อุปสฺถิโต ทรฺศนํ ทเทาฯ BSB BSB: Just then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
12 SANTHA ตํ ทฺฤษฺฏฺวา สิขริย อุทฺวิวิเช ศศงฺเก จฯ BSB BSB: When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and gripped with fear.
13 SANTHA ตทา ส ทูตสฺตํ พภาเษ เห สิขริย มา ไภสฺตว ปฺรารฺถนา คฺราหฺยา ชาตา ตว ภารฺยฺยา อิลีเศวา ปุตฺรํ ปฺรโสษฺยเต ตสฺย นาม โยेหนฺ อิติ กริษฺยสิฯ BSB BSB: But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.
14 SANTHA กิญฺจ ตฺวํ สานนฺท: สหรฺษศฺจ ภวิษฺยสิ ตสฺย ชนฺมนิ พหว อานนฺทิษฺยนฺติ จฯ BSB BSB: He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice at his birth,
15 SANTHA ยโต เหโต: ส ปรเมศฺวรสฺย โคจเร มหานฺ ภวิษฺยติ ตถา ทฺรากฺษารสํ สุรำ วา กิมปิ น ปาสฺยติ, อปรํ ชนฺมารภฺย ปวิเตฺรณาตฺมนา ปริปูรฺณ: BSB BSB: for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He shall never take wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.
16 SANTHA สนฺ อิสฺราเยลฺวํศียานฺ อเนกานฺ ปฺรโภ: ปรเมศฺวรสฺย มารฺคมาเนษฺยติฯ BSB BSB: Many of the sons of Israel he will turn back to the Lord their God.
18 SANTHA ตทา สิขริโย ทูตมวาทีตฺ กถเมตทฺ เวตฺสฺยามิ? ยโตหํ วฺฤทฺโธ มม ภารฺยฺยา จ วฺฤทฺธาฯ BSB BSB: “How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”
19 SANTHA ตโต ทูต: ปฺรตฺยุวาจ ปเศฺยศฺวรสฺย สากฺษาทฺวรฺตฺตี ชิพฺราเยลฺนามา ทูโตหํ ตฺวยา สห กถำ คทิตุํ ตุภฺยมิมำ ศุภวารฺตฺตำ ทาตุญฺจ เปฺรษิต:ฯ BSB BSB: “I am Gabriel,” replied the angel. “I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
20 SANTHA กินฺตุ มทียํ วากฺยํ กาเล ผลิษฺยติ ตตฺ ตฺวยา น ปฺรตีตมฺ อต: การณาทฺ ยาวเทว ตานิ น เสตฺสฺยนฺติ ตาวตฺ ตฺวํ วกฺตุํมศกฺโต มูโก ภวฯ BSB BSB: And now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this comes to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”
21 SANTHA ตทานีํ เย เย โลกา: สิขริยมไปกฺษนฺต เต มเธฺยมนฺทิรํ ตสฺย พหุวิลมฺพาทฺ อาศฺจรฺยฺยํ เมนิเรฯ BSB BSB: Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he took so long in the temple.
22 SANTHA ส พหิราคโต ยทา กิมปิ วากฺยํ วกฺตุมศกฺต: สงฺเกตํ กฺฤตฺวา นิ:ศพฺทสฺตเสฺยา ตทา มเธฺยมนฺทิรํ กสฺยจิทฺ ทรฺศนํ เตน ปฺราปฺตมฺ อิติ สรฺเวฺว พุพุธิเรฯ BSB BSB: When he came out and was unable to speak to them, they realized he had seen a vision in the temple. He kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
23 SANTHA อนนฺตรํ ตสฺย เสวนปรฺยฺยาเย สมฺปูรฺเณ สติ ส นิชเคหํ ชคามฯ BSB BSB: And when the days of his service were complete, he returned home.
24 SANTHA กติปยทิเนษุ คเตษุ ตสฺย ภารฺยฺยา อิลีเศวา ครฺพฺภวตี พภูว BSB BSB: After these days, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. She declared,
25 SANTHA ปศฺจาตฺ สา ปญฺจมาสานฺ สํโคปฺยากถยตฺ โลกานำ สมกฺษํ มมาปมานํ ขณฺฑยิตุํ ปรเมศฺวโร มยิ ทฺฤษฺฏึ ปาตยิตฺวา กรฺมฺเมทฺฤศํ กฺฤตวานฺฯ BSB BSB: “The Lord has done this for me. In these days He has shown me favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”
27 SANTHA ทายูโท วํศียาย ยูษผฺนามฺเน ปุรุษาย ยา มริยมฺนามกุมารี วาคฺทตฺตาสีตฺ ตสฺยา: สมีปํ ชิพฺราเยลฺ ทูต อีศฺวเรณ ปฺรหิต:ฯ BSB BSB: to a virgin pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 SANTHA ส คตฺวา ชคาท เห อีศฺวรานุคฺฤหีตกเนฺย ตว ศุภํ ภูยาตฺ ปฺรภุ: ปรเมศฺวรสฺตว สหาโยสฺติ นารีณำ มเธฺย ตฺวเมว ธนฺยาฯ BSB BSB: The angel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 SANTHA ตทานีํ สา ตํ ทฺฤษฺฏฺวา ตสฺย วากฺยต อุทฺวิชฺย กีทฺฤศํ ภาษณมิทมฺ อิติ มนสา จินฺตยามาสฯ BSB BSB: Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
30 SANTHA ตโต ทูโต'วทตฺ เห มริยมฺ ภยํ มาการฺษี:, ตฺวยิ ปรเมศฺวรสฺยานุคฺรโหสฺติฯ BSB BSB: So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31 SANTHA ปศฺย ตฺวํ ครฺพฺภํ ธฺฤตฺวา ปุตฺรํ ปฺรโสษฺยเส ตสฺย นาม ยีศุริติ กริษฺยสิฯ BSB BSB: Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus.
32 SANTHA ส มหานฺ ภวิษฺยติ ตถา สรฺเวฺวภฺย: เศฺรษฺฐสฺย ปุตฺร อิติ ขฺยาสฺยติ; อปรํ ปฺรภุ: ปรเมศฺวรสฺตสฺย ปิตุรฺทายูท: สึหาสนํ ตไสฺม ทาสฺยติ; BSB BSB: He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David,
33 SANTHA ตถา ส ยากูโพ วํโศปริ สรฺวฺวทา ราชตฺวํ กริษฺยติ, ตสฺย ราชตฺวสฺยานฺโต น ภวิษฺยติฯ BSB BSB: and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!”
35 SANTHA ตโต ทูโต'กถยตฺ ปวิตฺร อาตฺมา ตฺวามาศฺรายิษฺยติ ตถา สรฺวฺวเศฺรษฺฐสฺย ศกฺติสฺตโวปริ ฉายำ กริษฺยติ ตโต เหโตสฺตว ครฺพฺภาทฺ ย: ปวิตฺรพาลโก ชนิษฺยเต ส อีศฺวรปุตฺร อิติ ขฺยาตึ ปฺราปฺสฺยติฯ BSB BSB: The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.
36 SANTHA อปรญฺจ ปศฺย ตว ชฺญาติริลีเศวา ยำ สรฺเวฺว พนฺธฺยามวทนฺ อิทานีํ สา วารฺทฺธเกฺย สนฺตานเมกํ ครฺพฺเภ'ธารยตฺ ตสฺย ษษฺฐมาโสภูตฺฯ BSB BSB: Look, even Elizabeth your relative has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is in her sixth month.
37 SANTHA กิมปิ กรฺมฺม นาสาธฺยมฺ อีศฺวรสฺยฯ BSB BSB: For no word from God will ever fail.”
39 SANTHA อถ กติปยทินาตฺ ปรํ มริยมฺ ตสฺมาตฺ ปรฺวฺวตมยปฺรเทศียยิหูทายา นครเมกํ ศีฆฺรํ คตฺวา BSB BSB: In those days Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judah,
40 SANTHA สิขริยยาชกสฺย คฺฤหํ ปฺรวิศฺย ตสฺย ชายามฺ อิลีเศวำ สมฺโพธฺยาวทตฺฯ BSB BSB: where she entered the home of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
41 SANTHA ตโต มริยม: สมฺโพธนวาเกฺย อิลีเศวายา: กรฺณโย: ปฺรวิษฺฏมาเตฺร สติ ตสฺยา ครฺพฺภสฺถพาลโก นนรฺตฺตฯ ตต อิลีเศวา ปวิเตฺรณาตฺมนา ปริปูรฺณา สตี BSB BSB: When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42 SANTHA โปฺรจฺไจรฺคทิตุมาเรเภ, โยษิตำ มเธฺย ตฺวเมว ธนฺยา, ตว ครฺพฺภสฺถ: ศิศุศฺจ ธนฺย:ฯ BSB BSB: In a loud voice she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
43 SANTHA ตฺวํ ปฺรโภรฺมาตา, มม นิเวศเน ตฺวยา จรณาวรฺปิเตา, มมาทฺย เสาภาคฺยเมตตฺฯ BSB BSB: And why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 SANTHA ปศฺย ตว วาเกฺย มม กรฺณโย: ปฺรวิษฺฏมาเตฺร สติ มโมทรสฺถ: ศิศุรานนฺทานฺ นนรฺตฺตฯ BSB BSB: For as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
45 SANTHA ยา สฺตฺรี วฺยศฺวสีตฺ สา ธนฺยา, ยโต เหโตสฺตำ ปฺรติ ปรเมศฺวโรกฺตํ วากฺยํ สรฺวฺวํ สิทฺธํ ภวิษฺยติฯ BSB BSB: Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled.”
47 SANTHA มมาตฺมา ตารเกเศ จ สมุลฺลาสํ ปฺรคจฺฉติฯ BSB BSB: and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!
49 SANTHA ย: สรฺวฺวศกฺติมานฺ ยสฺย นามาปิ จ ปวิตฺรกํฯ ส เอว สุมหตฺกรฺมฺม กฺฤตวานฺ มนฺนิมิตฺตกํฯ BSB BSB: For the Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is His name.
50 SANTHA เย พิภฺยติ ชนาสฺตสฺมาตฺ เตษำ สนฺตานปํกฺติษุฯ อนุกมฺปา ตทียา จ สรฺวฺวไทว สุติษฺฐติฯ BSB BSB: His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation.
51 SANTHA สฺวพาหุพลตเสฺตน ปฺรากาศฺยต ปรากฺรม:ฯ มน:กุมนฺตฺรณาสารฺทฺธํ วิกีรฺยฺยนฺเต'ภิมานิน:ฯ BSB BSB: He has performed mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who are proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
52 SANTHA สึหาสนคตาโลฺลกานฺ พลินศฺจาวโรหฺย ส:ฯ ปเทษูจฺเจษุ โลกำสฺตุ กฺษุทฺรานฺ สํสฺถาปยตฺยปิฯ BSB BSB: He has brought down rulers from their thrones, but has exalted the humble.
53 SANTHA กฺษุธิตานฺ มานวานฺ ทฺรไวฺยรุตฺตไม: ปริตรฺปฺย ส:ฯ สกลานฺ ธนิโน โลกานฺ วิสฺฤเชทฺ ริกฺตหสฺตกานฺฯ BSB BSB: He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty.
54 SANTHA อิพฺราหีมิ จ ตทฺวํเศ ยา ทยาสฺติ สไทว ตำฯ สฺมฺฤตฺวา ปุรา ปิตฺฤณำ โน ยถา สากฺษาตฺ ปฺรติศฺรุตํฯ BSB BSB: He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful,
55 SANTHA อิสฺราเยลฺเสวกเสฺตน ตโถปกฺริยเต สฺวยํ๚ BSB BSB: as He promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever.”
56 SANTHA อนนฺตรํ มริยมฺ ปฺราเยณ มาสตฺรยมฺ อิลีเศวยา สโหษิตฺวา วฺยาฆุยฺย นิชนิเวศนํ ยเยาฯ BSB BSB: Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
57 SANTHA ตทนนฺตรมฺ อิลีเศวายา: ปฺรสวกาล อุปสฺถิเต สติ สา ปุตฺรํ ปฺราโสษฺฏฯ BSB BSB: When the time came for Elizabeth to have her child, she gave birth to a son.
58 SANTHA ตต: ปรเมศฺวรสฺตสฺยำ มหานุคฺรหํ กฺฤตวานฺ เอตตฺ ศฺรุตฺวา สมีปวาสิน: กุฏุมฺพาศฺจาคตฺย ตยา สห มุมุทิเรฯ BSB BSB: Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they rejoiced with her.
59 SANTHA ตถาษฺฏเม ทิเน เต พาลกสฺย ตฺวจํ เฉตฺตุมฺ เอตฺย ตสฺย ปิตฺฤนามานุรูปํ ตนฺนาม สิขริย อิติ กรฺตฺตุมีษุ:ฯ BSB BSB: On the eighth day, when they came to circumcise the child, they were going to name him after his father Zechariah.
60 SANTHA กินฺตุ ตสฺย มาตากถยตฺ ตนฺน, นามาสฺย โยหนฺ อิติ กรฺตฺตวฺยมฺฯ BSB BSB: But his mother replied, “No! He shall be called John.”
61 SANTHA ตทา เต วฺยาหรนฺ ตว วํศมเธฺย นาเมทฺฤศํ กสฺยาปิ นาสฺติฯ BSB BSB: They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who bears this name.”
62 SANTHA ตต: ปรํ ตสฺย ปิตรํ สิขริยํ ปฺรติ สงฺเกตฺย ปปฺรจฺฉุ: ศิโศ: กึ นาม การิษฺยเต? BSB BSB: So they made signs to his father to find out what he wanted to name the child.
63 SANTHA ตต: ส ผลกเมกํ ยาจิตฺวา ลิเลข ตสฺย นาม โยหนฺ ภวิษฺยติฯ ตสฺมาตฺ สรฺเวฺว อาศฺจรฺยฺยํ เมนิเรฯ BSB BSB: Zechariah asked for a tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they were all amazed.
64 SANTHA ตตฺกฺษณํ สิขริยสฺย ชิหฺวาชาเฑฺย'ปคเต ส มุขํ วฺยาทาย สฺปษฺฏวรฺณมุจฺจารฺยฺย อีศฺวรสฺย คุณานุวาทํ จการฯ BSB BSB: Immediately Zechariah’s mouth was opened and his tongue was released, and he began to speak, praising God.
65 SANTHA ตสฺมาจฺจตุรฺทิกฺสฺถา: สมีปวาสิโลกา ภีตา เอวเมตา: สรฺวฺวา: กถา ยิหูทายา: ปรฺวฺวตมยปฺรเทศสฺย สรฺวฺวตฺร ปฺรจาริตา:ฯ BSB BSB: All their neighbors were filled with awe, and people throughout the hill country of Judea were talking about these events.
66 SANTHA ตสฺมาตฺ โศฺรตาโร มน:สุ สฺถาปยิตฺวา กถยามฺพภูวุ: กีทฺฤโศยํ พาโล ภวิษฺยติ? อถ ปรเมศฺวรสฺตสฺย สหาโยภูตฺฯ BSB BSB: And all who heard this wondered in their hearts and asked, “What then will this child become?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.
67 SANTHA ตทา โยหน: ปิตา สิขริย: ปวิเตฺรณาตฺมนา ปริปูรฺณ: สนฺ เอตาทฺฤศํ ภวิษฺยทฺวากฺยํ กถยามาสฯ BSB BSB: Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
68 SANTHA อิสฺราเยล: ปฺรภุ รฺยสฺตุ ส ธนฺย: ปรเมศฺวร:ฯ อนุคฺฤหฺย นิชาโลฺลกานฺ ส เอว ปริโมจเยตฺฯ BSB BSB: “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has visited and redeemed His people.
69 SANTHA วิปกฺษชนหเสฺตโภฺย ยถา โมจฺยามเห วยํฯ ยาวชฺชีวญฺจ ธรฺมฺเมณ สารเลฺยน จ นิรฺภยา:ฯ BSB BSB: He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David,
70 SANTHA เสวามไห ตเมไวกมฺ เอตตฺการณเมว จฯ สฺวกียํ สุปวิตฺรญฺจ สํสฺมฺฤตฺย นิยมํ สทาฯ BSB BSB: as He spoke through His holy prophets, those of ages past,
71 SANTHA กฺฤปยา ปุรุษานฺ ปูรฺวฺวานฺ นิกษารฺถาตฺตุ น: ปิตุ:ฯ อิพฺราหีม: สมีเป ยํ ศปถํ กฺฤตวานฺ ปุราฯ BSB BSB: salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,
72 SANTHA ตเมว สผลํ กรฺตฺตํ ตถา ศตฺรุคณสฺย จฯ ฤृตียาการิณศฺไจว กเรโภฺย รกฺษณาย น:ฯ BSB BSB: to show mercy to our fathers and to remember His holy covenant,
73 SANTHA สฺฤษฺเฏ: ปฺรถมต: สฺวีไย: ปวิไตฺร รฺภาวิวาทิภิ:ฯ BSB BSB: the oath He swore to our father Abraham, to grant us
74 SANTHA ยโถกฺตวานฺ ตถา สฺวสฺย ทายูท: เสวกสฺย ตุฯ BSB BSB: deliverance from hostile hands, that we may serve Him without fear,
75 SANTHA วํเศ ตฺราตารเมกํ ส สมุตฺปาทิตวานฺ สฺวยมฺฯ BSB BSB: in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our lives.
76 SANTHA อโต เห พาลก ตฺวนฺตุ สรฺเวฺวภฺย: เศฺรษฺฐ เอว ย:ฯ ตไสฺยว ภาวิวาทีติ ปฺรวิขฺยาโต ภวิษฺยสิฯ อสฺมากํ จรณานฺ เกฺษเม มารฺเค จาลยิตุํ สทาฯ เอวํ ธฺวานฺเต'รฺถโต มฺฤโตฺยศฺฉายายำ เย ตุ มานวา:ฯ BSB BSB: And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for Him,
77 SANTHA อุปวิษฺฏาสฺตุ ตาเนว ปฺรกาศยิตุเมว หิฯ กฺฤตฺวา มหานุกมฺปำ หิ ยาเมว ปรเมศฺวร:ฯ BSB BSB: to give to His people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 SANTHA อูรฺทฺวฺวาตฺ สูรฺยฺยมุทาไยฺยวาสฺมภฺยํ ปฺราทาตฺตุ ทรฺศนํฯ ตยานุกมฺปยา สฺวสฺย โลกานำ ปาปโมจเนฯ BSB BSB: because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the Dawn will visit us from on high,
79 SANTHA ปริตฺราณสฺย เตโภฺย หิ ชฺญานวิศฺราณนาย จฯ ปฺรโภ รฺมารฺคํ ปริษฺกรฺตฺตุํ ตสฺยาคฺรายี ภวิษฺยสิ๚ BSB BSB: to shine on those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
