1En aquellos días, vino Juan el Bautista predicando en el desierto de Judea, diciendo:In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea

2“¡Arrepiéntanse, porque el Reino de los Cielos está cerca!”and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

3Porque éste es el que fue anunciado por el profeta Isaías, diciendo, “La voz de uno que clama en el desierto, ¡preparen el camino del Señor! Enderecen sus caminos”.This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’”

4El mismo Juan llevaba ropa de pelo de camello y un cinturón de cuero alrededor de la cintura. Su comida era chapulines y miel silvestre.John wore a garment of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.

5Entonces la gente de Jerusalén, de toda Judea y de toda la región del Jordán salía hacia él.People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region around the Jordan.

6Se dejaban bautizar por él en el Jordán, confesando sus pecados.Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

7Pero al ver que muchos de los fariseos y saduceos venían a su bautismo, les dijo: “Hijos de víboras, ¿quién les ha advertido que huyan de la ira que ha de venir?But when John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his place of baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

8Por lo tanto, ¡produzcan un fruto digno de arrepentimiento!Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance.

9No piensen entre ustedes mismos: “Tenemos a Abraham por padre”, porque les digo que Dios puede levantar hijos a Abraham de estas piedras.And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

10Incluso ahora el hacha está a la raíz de los árboles. Por eso, todo árbol que no da buen fruto es cortado y echado al fuego.The axe lies ready at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

11“Yo sí los bautizo en agua para que se arrepientan, pero el que viene detrás de mí es más poderoso que yo, cuyas sandalias no soy digno de llevar. Él los bautizará en el Espíritu Santo.I baptize you with water for repentance, but after me will come One more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

12Tiene en la mano su aventador, y limpiará a fondo su era. Recogerá su trigo en el granero, pero la paja la quemará con fuego inextinguible.”His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

13Entonces Jesús vino de Galilea al Jordán, a Juan, para ser bautizado por él.At that time Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.

14Pero Juan se lo impedía, diciendo: “Tengo necesidad de ser bautizado por ti, ¿y tú vienes a mí?”But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?”

15Pero Jesús, respondiendo, le dijo: “Permítelo ahora, porque éste es el camino adecuado para cumplir toda justicia.” Entonces se lo permitió.“Let it be so now,” Jesus replied. “It is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness in this way.” Then John permitted Him.

16Jesús, después de ser bautizado, subió directamente del agua; y los cielos se le abrieron. Vio que el Espíritu de Dios descendía como una paloma y venía sobre él.As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him.

17Y una voz de los cielos decía: “Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien me complazco.”And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”
