Prophecy and Tongues 1 TNT Labour for love and covet spretuall giftes: and most chefly for to prophesye. BSB BSB: Earnestly pursue love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
TNT For he that speaketh with toges speaketh not vnto men but vnto god for no man heareth him how be it in the sprete he speaketh misteries. BSB BSB: For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
TNT But he that prophesieth speaketh vnto men to edifyinge to exhortacion and to comforte. BSB BSB: But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, encouragement, and comfort.
TNT He that speaketh with tonges proffiteth him silfe: he that prophesyeth edifieth the congregacion. BSB BSB: The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.
TNT I wolde that ye all spake with tonges: but rather that ye prophesied. For greater is he that prophisieth? then he that speaketh with tonges except he expounde it also that the congregacion maye have edifyinge. BSB BSB: I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be edified.
TNT Now brehren if I come vnto you speakige with tonges: what shall I profit you excepte I speake vnto you other by revelacion or knowledge or prophesyinge or doctrine. BSB BSB: Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
TNT Moreover when thinges with out lyfe geve sounde: whether it be a pype or an harpe: except they make a distinccion in the soundes: how shall it be knowen what is pyped or harped? BSB BSB: Even in the case of lifeless instruments, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone recognize the tune they are playing unless the notes are distinct?
TNT And also if the trope geve an vncertayne voyce who shall prepare him silfe to fyght? BSB BSB: Again, if the trumpet sounds a muffled call, who will prepare for battle?
TNT Even so lykwyse when ye speake with toges excepte ye speake wordes that have signification how shall that be vnderstonde what is spoke? For ye shall but speake in the ayer. BSB BSB: So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.
TNT Many kyndes of voyces are in the worlde and none of them are with out signification. BSB BSB: Assuredly, there are many different languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.
TNT If I knowe not what the voyce meaneth I shalbe vnto him that speaketh an alient: and and he that speaketh shalbe an alient vnto me BSB BSB: If, then, I do not know the meaning of someone’s language, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me.
TNT Even so ye (for as moche as ye covet spretuall giftes) seke that ye maye have plentye vnto the edifyinge of the congregacion. BSB BSB: It is the same with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, strive to excel in gifts that build up the church.
TNT Wherfore let him that speaketh with tonges praye that he maye interpret also. BSB BSB: Therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret.
TNT If I praye with tonge my sprete prayeth: but my mynde is with out frute. BSB BSB: For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
TNT What is it then? I will praye with the sprete ad will praye with the mynde also. I will singe with the sprete and will singe with the mynde also. BSB BSB: What then shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.
TNT For els when thou blessest with the sprete how shall he that occupieth the roume of the vnlearned saye amen at thy gevinge of thankes seynge he vnderstondeth not what thou sayest. BSB BSB: Otherwise, if you speak a blessing in spirit, how can someone who is uninstructed say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
TNT Thou verely gevest thankes well but the other is not edyfied. BSB BSB: You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other one is not edified.
TNT I thanke my god I speake with toges moare then ye all. BSB BSB: I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
TNT Yet had I lever in the congregacion to speake five wordes with my mynde to the informacio of other rather then ten thousande wordes with the tonge. BSB BSB: But in the church, I would rather speak five coherent words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
TNT Brethren be not chyldre in witte. How be it as concerninge maliciousnes be chyldre: but in witte be perfet. BSB BSB: Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.
TNT In the lawe it is written with other toges and with other lyppes wyll I speake vnto this people and yet for all that will they not heare me sayth the Lorde. BSB BSB: It is written in the Law: “By strange tongues and foreign lips I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to Me, says the Lord.”
TNT Wherfore tonges are for a signe not to them that beleve: but to them that beleve not. Contrary wyse prophesyinge serveth not for them that beleve not: but for them which beleve. BSB BSB: Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.
TNT Yf therfore when all the congregacion is come to gedder and all speake with tonges ther come in they that are vnlearned or they which beleve not: will they not saye that ye are out of youre wittes? BSB BSB: So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who are uninstructed or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds?
TNT But and yf all prophesy and ther come in one that beleveth not or one vnlearned he is rebuked of all men and is iudged of every man: BSB BSB: But if an unbeliever or uninstructed person comes in while everyone is prophesying, he will be convicted and called to account by all,
TNT and so are the secretes of his hert opened and so falleth he doune on his face and worshippeth God and sayth that God is with you in dede. BSB BSB: and the secrets of his heart will be made known. So he will fall facedown and worship God, proclaiming, “God is truly among you!”
Orderly Worship 26 TNT How is it then brethren? When ye come to gedder every man hath his songe hath his doctryne hath his tonge hath his revelacion hath his interpretacion. Let all thinges be done vnto edifyinge. BSB BSB: What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a psalm or a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. All of these must be done to build up the church.
TNT If eny man speake with tonges let it be two at once or at the most thre at once and that by course: and let another interprete it. BSB BSB: If anyone speaks in a tongue, two, or at most three, should speak in turn, and someone must interpret.
TNT But yf ther be no interpreter let him kepe silence in the congregacion and let him speake to him selfe and to God. BSB BSB: But if there is no interpreter, he should remain silent in the church and speak only to himself and God.
TNT Let the Prophetes speake two at once or thre at once and let other iudge. BSB BSB: Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.
TNT Yf eny revelacion be made to another that sitteth by let the fyrst holde his peace. BSB BSB: And if a revelation comes to someone who is seated, the first speaker should stop.
TNT For ye maye all prophesy one by one that all maye learne and all maye have comforte. BSB BSB: For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.
TNT For the spretes of the Prophetes are in the power of the Prophetes. BSB BSB: The spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.
TNT For God is not causer of stryfe: but of peace as he is in all other congregacions of the saynctes. BSB BSB: For God is not a God of disorder, but of peace—as in all the churches of the saints.
TNT If they will learne enythinge let the axe their husbandes at home. For it is a shame for wemen to speake in the congregacion. BSB BSB: If they wish to inquire about something, they are to ask their own husbands at home; for it is dishonorable for a woman to speak in the church.
TNT Spronge the worde of god from you? Ether came it vnto you only? BSB BSB: Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only ones it has reached?
TNT Yf eny man thinke him sylfe a prophet ether spirituall: let him vnderstonde what thinges I write vnto you. For they are the comaundementes of the Lorde. BSB BSB: If anyone considers himself a prophet or spiritual person, let him acknowledge that what I am writing you is the Lord’s command.
TNT But and yf eny man be ignorant let him be ignorant. BSB BSB: But if anyone ignores this, he himself will be ignored.
TNT Wherfore brethren covet to prophesye and forbyd not to speake with tonges. BSB BSB: So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
TNT And let all thinges be done honestly and in order. BSB BSB: But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner.
