The Offering of Isaac (John 3:1–21)
WBS And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and cleft the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose and went to the place which God had named to him. BSB BSB: So Abraham got up early the next morning, saddled his donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated.
WBS Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. BSB BSB: On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
WBS And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt-offering? BSB BSB: Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
WBS And they came to the place which God had named to him; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order; and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. The LORD Provides the Sacrifice 12 WBS And he said, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing to him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld from me thy son, thy only son . BSB BSB: “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”
WBS And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. BSB BSB: Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram in a thicket, caught by its horns. So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
WBS And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it will be seen. BSB BSB: And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
WBS And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven the second time, BSB BSB: And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time,
WBS And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thy only son : BSB BSB: saying, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your only son,
WBS That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand which is on the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; BSB BSB: I will surely bless you, and I will multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies.
WBS And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed: because thou hast obeyed my voice. BSB BSB: And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
WBS So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba. BSB BSB: Abraham went back to his servants, and they got up and set out together for Beersheba. And Abraham settled in Beersheba.
The Sons of Nahor 20 WBS And it came to pass after these things, that it was told to Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also borne children to thy brother Nahor; BSB BSB: Some time later, Abraham was told, “Milcah has also borne sons to your brother Nahor:
WBS Huz his first-born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, BSB BSB: Uz the firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),
