The Sabbath Rest (Genesis 2:1–3; Exodus 16:22–30)
WBS Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. BSB BSB: Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it.
WBS For to us was the gospel preached, as well as to them: but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it . BSB BSB: For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.
WBS For we who have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. BSB BSB: Now we who have believed enter that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said: “So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’” And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world.
WBS For he spoke in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God rested the seventh day from all his works. BSB BSB: For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all His works.”
WBS And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. BSB BSB: And again, as He says in the passage above: “They shall never enter My rest.”
WBS Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter into it, and they to whom it was first preached entered not because of unbelief: BSB BSB: Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
WBS (Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To-day, after so long a time; as it is said, To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. BSB BSB: God again designated a certain day as “Today,” when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
WBS For if Jesus had given them rest, then he would not afterward have spoken of another day. BSB BSB: For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
WBS There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. BSB BSB: There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
WBS For he that hath entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.) BSB BSB: For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His.
WBS Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. BSB BSB: Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience.
The Living Word (2 Timothy 3:10–17)
WBS For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. BSB BSB: For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
WBS Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened to the eyes of him with whom we have to do. BSB BSB: Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
WBS Seeing then that we have a great High Priest, that hath passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. BSB BSB: Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess.
WBS Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. BSB BSB: Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
