A Warning to the Rich (Proverbs 23:1–5; 1 Timothy 6:17–19)
WBS Come now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you . BSB BSB: Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail over the misery to come upon you.
WBS Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. BSB BSB: Your riches have rotted and moths have eaten your clothes.
WBS Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have amassed treasure for the last days. BSB BSB: Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days.
WBS Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped your fields, which is by you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. BSB BSB: Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
WBS Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. BSB BSB: You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter.
WBS Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. BSB BSB: You have condemned and murdered the righteous, who did not resist you.
Patience in Suffering (Job 1:1–5)
WBS Be patient, therefore, brethren, to the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receiveth the early and the latter rain. BSB BSB: Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil—how patient he is for the fall and spring rains.
WBS Be ye also patient; establish your hearts; for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. BSB BSB: You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.
WBS Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. BSB BSB: Do not complain about one another, brothers, so that you will not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing at the door!
WBS Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. BSB BSB: Brothers, as an example of patience in affliction, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
WBS Behold, we count them happy who endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. BSB BSB: See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
WBS But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea, be yea: and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. BSB BSB: Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth or by any other oath. Simply let your “Yes” be yes, and your “No,” no, so that you will not fall under judgment.
The Prayer of Faith 13 WBS Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any cheerful? let him sing psalms. BSB BSB: Is any one of you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises.
WBS And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he hath committed sins, they will be forgiven him. BSB BSB: And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
WBS Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous man availeth much. BSB BSB: Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.
WBS Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. BSB BSB: Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
WBS And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit. BSB BSB: Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth yielded its crops.
Restoring a Sinner 19 WBS Brethren, if any one of you should err from the truth, and one should convert him; BSB BSB: My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back,
WBS Let him know, that he who converteth a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death, and will hide a multitude of sins. BSB BSB: consider this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
