Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind 2 WBS And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who sinned, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? BSB BSB: and His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 WBS Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God would be displayed in him.
WBS I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh when no man can work. BSB BSB: While it is daytime, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
WBS As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. BSB BSB: While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
WBS When he had thus spoken, he spit on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, BSB BSB: When Jesus had said this, He spit on the ground, made some mud, and applied it to the man’s eyes.
WBS The neighbors therefore, and they who before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? BSB BSB: At this, his neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging began to ask, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?”
WBS Some said, This is he: others said , He is like him: but he said, I am he . BSB BSB: Some claimed that he was, but others said, “No, he just looks like him.” But the man kept saying, “I am the one.”
WBS Therefore they said to him, How were thy eyes opened? BSB BSB: “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
WBS He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus, made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight. BSB BSB: He answered, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and anointed my eyes, and He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and received my sight.”
WBS Then said they to him, Where is he? He said, I know not. BSB BSB: “Where is He?” they asked. “I do not know,” he answered.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing 13 WBS They brought to the Pharisees him that before was blind. BSB BSB: They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
WBS And it was the sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. BSB BSB: Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath.
WBS Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said to them, He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and do see. BSB BSB: So the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. The man answered, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.”
WBS Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not from God, because he keepeth not the sabbath. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. BSB BSB: Because of this, some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was division among them.
WBS They say to the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thy eyes? He said, He is a prophet. BSB BSB: So once again they asked the man who had been blind, “What do you say about Him, since it was your eyes He opened?” “He is a prophet,” the man replied.
WBS But the Jews did not believe concerning him that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. BSB BSB: The Jews still did not believe that the man had been blind and had received his sight until they summoned his parents
WBS And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? BSB BSB: and asked, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? So how is it that he can now see?”
WBS His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: BSB BSB: His parents answered, “We know he is our son, and we know he was born blind.
WBS But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he will speak for himself. BSB BSB: But how he can now see or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.”
WBS These words his parents spoke, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man confessed that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. BSB BSB: His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already determined that anyone who confessed Jesus as the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.
WBS Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him. BSB BSB: That was why his parents said, “He is old enough. Ask him.”
WBS Then again they called the man that was blind, and said to him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. BSB BSB: So a second time they called for the man who had been blind and said, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.”
WBS He answered and said, Whether he is a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see. BSB BSB: He answered, “Whether He is a sinner I do not know. There is one thing I do know: I was blind, but now I see!”
WBS Then they said to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thy eyes? BSB BSB: “What did He do to you?” they asked. “How did He open your eyes?”
WBS He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: Why would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? BSB BSB: He replied, “I already told you, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”
WBS Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are the disciples of Moses. BSB BSB: Then they heaped insults on him and said, “You are His disciple; we are disciples of Moses.
WBS We know that God spoke to Moses: as for this man , we know not whence he is. BSB BSB: We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from.”
WBS The man answered and said to them, Why, herein is a marvelous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened my eyes. BSB BSB: “That is remarkable indeed!” the man said. “You do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.
WBS Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man is a worshiper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. BSB BSB: We know that God does not listen to sinners, but He does listen to the one who worships Him and does His will.
WBS Since the world began hath it not been heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. BSB BSB: Never before has anyone heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
WBS If this man were not from God, he could do nothing. BSB BSB: If this man were not from God, He could do no such thing.”
WBS They answered and said to him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? and they cast him out. BSB BSB: They replied, “You were born in utter sin, and you are instructing us?” And they threw him out.
Spiritual Blindness 35 WBS Jesus heard that they had cast him out: and when he had found him, he said to him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? BSB BSB: When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
WBS He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him? BSB BSB: “Who is He, Sir?” he replied. “Tell me so that I may believe in Him.”
WBS And Jesus said to him, thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. BSB BSB: “You have already seen Him,” Jesus answered. “He is the One speaking with you.”
WBS And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshiped him. BSB BSB: “Lord, I believe,” he said. And he worshiped Jesus.
WBS And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they who see not, may see; and that they who see, may be made blind. BSB BSB: Then Jesus declared, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind may see and those who see may become blind.”
WBS And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words, and said to him, Are we blind also? BSB BSB: Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard this, and they asked Him, “Are we blind too?”
WBS Jesus said to them, If ye were blind, ye would have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. BSB BSB: “If you were blind,” Jesus replied, “you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim you can see, your guilt remains.”
