A Greeting from Jude (James 1:1)
WBS Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: BSB BSB: Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who are called, loved by God the Father, and kept in Jesus Christ:
WBS Mercy to you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. BSB BSB: Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.
God’s Judgment on the Ungodly (2 Peter 3:1–7)
WBS For certain men have crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. BSB BSB: For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—ungodly ones who were designated long ago for condemnation. They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality, and they deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
WBS I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. BSB BSB: Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, He destroyed those who did not believe.
WBS And the angels who kept not their first state, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness to the judgment of the great day. BSB BSB: And the angels who did not stay within their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling—these He has kept in eternal chains under darkness, bound for judgment on that great day.
WBS Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to impurity, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. BSB BSB: In like manner, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, who indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire.
WBS Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. BSB BSB: Yet in the same way these dreamers defile their bodies, reject authority, and slander glorious beings.
WBS Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. BSB BSB: But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, did not presume to bring a slanderous charge against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
WBS But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. BSB BSB: These men, however, slander what they do not understand, and like irrational animals, they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively.
WBS Woe to them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and run greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. BSB BSB: Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain; they have rushed for profit into the error of Balaam; they have perished in Korah’s rebellion.
WBS These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about by winds; withered autumnal trees, without fruit, twice dead, plucked out by the roots; BSB BSB: These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts, shamelessly feasting with you but shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted.
WBS Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. BSB BSB: They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.
WBS To execute judgment upon all, and to convict all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have impiously committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. BSB BSB: to execute judgment on everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of every ungodly act of wickedness and every harsh word spoken against Him by ungodly sinners.”
WBS These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words , having men's persons in admiration because of advantage. BSB BSB: These men are discontented grumblers, following after their own lusts; their mouths spew arrogance; they flatter others for their own advantage.
A Call to Persevere (Hebrews 10:19–39; 2 Peter 3:1–7)
WBS But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; BSB BSB: But you, beloved, remember what was foretold by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ
WBS That they told you there would be mockers in the last time, who would walk after their own ungodly lusts. BSB BSB: when they said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow after their own ungodly desires.”
WBS These are they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. BSB BSB: These are the ones who cause divisions, who are worldly and devoid of the Spirit.
WBS But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying by the Holy Spirit, BSB BSB: But you, beloved, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,
WBS Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. BSB BSB: keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life.
WBS And of some have compassion, making a difference: BSB BSB: And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt;
WBS And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. BSB BSB: save others by snatching them from the fire; and to still others show mercy tempered with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.
Doxology (Romans 16:25–27)
WBS Now to him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, BSB BSB: Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished in His glorious presence, with great joy—
WBS To God the only wise, our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. BSB BSB: to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord before all time, and now, and for all eternity. Amen.
