Unlawful Sexual Relations (Matthew 5:27–30)
1 WBS And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 WBS Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, I am the LORD your God. BSB BSB: “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: I am the LORD your God.
3 WBS After the doings of the land of Egypt in which ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances. BSB BSB: You must not follow the practices of the land of Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not follow the practices of the land of Canaan, into which I am bringing you. You must not walk in their customs.
4 WBS Ye shall perform my judgments, and keep my ordinances, to walk in them; I am the LORD your God. BSB BSB: You are to practice My judgments and keep My statutes by walking in them. I am the LORD your God.
5 WBS Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments: which if a man doeth, he shall live in them: I am the LORD. BSB BSB: Keep My statutes and My judgments, for the man who does these things will live by them. I am the LORD.
7 WBS The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not expose the nakedness of your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual relations with her.
8 WBS The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; it would dishonor your father.
9 WBS The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or daughter of thy mother, whether born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.
10 WBS The nakedness of thy son's daughter, or of thy daughter's daughter, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover: for theirs is thy own nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, for that would shame your family.
11 WBS The nakedness of thy father's wife's daughter, begotten by thy father, (she is thy sister) thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father’s wife, born to your father; she is your sister.
12 WBS Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's sister: she is thy father's near kinswoman. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative.
13 WBS Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother's sister: for she is thy mother's near kinswoman. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s close relative.
14 WBS Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thy aunt. BSB BSB: You must not dishonor your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations with her; she is your aunt.
15 WBS Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter-in-law: she is thy son's wife, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; you are not to have sexual relations with her.
16 WBS Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife: it is thy brother's nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife; that would shame your brother.
17 WBS Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, neither shalt thou take her son's daughter, or her daughter's daughter, to uncover her nakedness; for they are her near kinswomen: it is wickedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. You are not to marry her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter and have sexual relations with her. They are close relatives; it is depraved.
18 WBS Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her , to uncover her nakedness besides the other in her life -time . BSB BSB: You must not take your wife’s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is still alive.
19 WBS Also thou shalt not approach to a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is put apart for her uncleanness. BSB BSB: You must not approach a woman to have sexual relations with her during her menstrual period.
20 WBS Moreover, thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbor's wife, to defile thyself with her. BSB BSB: You must not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife and thus defile yourself with her.
22 WBS Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. BSB BSB: You must not lie with a man as with a woman; that is an abomination.
23 WBS Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. BSB BSB: You must not lie carnally with any animal, thus defiling yourself with it; a woman must not stand before an animal to mate with it; that is a perversion.
25 WBS And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit its iniquity upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. BSB BSB: Even the land has become defiled, so I am punishing it for its sin, and the land will vomit out its inhabitants.
26 WBS Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you. BSB BSB: But you are to keep My statutes and ordinances, and you must not commit any of these abominations—neither your native-born nor the foreigner who lives among you.
27 WBS (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, who were before you, and the land is defiled;) BSB BSB: For the men who were in the land before you committed all these abominations, and the land has become defiled.
28 WBS That the land may not vomit you out also, when ye defile it, as it vomited out the nations that were before you. BSB BSB: So if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it spewed out the nations before you.
29 WBS For whoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people. BSB BSB: Therefore anyone who commits any of these abominations must be cut off from among his people.
30 WBS Therefore shall ye keep my ordinance, that ye commit not any one of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that ye defile not yourselves in them; I am the LORD your God. BSB BSB: You must keep My charge not to practice any of the abominable customs that were practiced before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them. I am the LORD your God.”
