Jesus Heals a Paralytic (Matthew 9:1–8; Luke 5:17–26)
WBS And forthwith many were assembled, so that there was no room to receive them , no not so much as about the door: and he preached the word to them. BSB BSB: they gathered in such large numbers that there was no more room, not even outside the door, as Jesus spoke the word to them.
WBS And they come to him, bringing one sick with the palsy, who was borne by four. BSB BSB: Then a paralytic was brought to Him, carried by four men.
WBS And when they could not come nigh to him by reason of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed on which the sick with the palsy lay. BSB BSB: Since they were unable to get to Jesus through the crowd, they uncovered the roof above Him, made an opening, and lowered the paralytic on his mat.
WBS But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, BSB BSB: But some of the scribes were sitting there and thinking in their hearts,
WBS Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? BSB BSB: “Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
WBS And immediately, when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said to them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? BSB BSB: At once Jesus knew in His spirit that they were thinking this way within themselves. “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?” He asked.
WBS Which is easier, to say to the sick with the palsy, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? BSB BSB: “Which is easier: to say to a paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’?
WBS But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, he saith to the sick with the palsy, BSB BSB: But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralytic,
WBS I say to thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go into thy house. BSB BSB: “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”
WBS And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; so that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion. BSB BSB: And immediately the man got up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of them all. As a result, they were all astounded and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew 9:9–13; Luke 5:27–32)
WBS And he went forth again by the sea -side ; and all the multitude resorted to him, and he taught them. BSB BSB: Once again Jesus went out beside the sea. All the people came to Him, and He taught them there.
WBS And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alpheus, sitting at the receipt of custom, and said to him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. BSB BSB: As He was walking along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.
WBS And it came to pass, that as Jesus sat at table in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many, and they followed him. BSB BSB: While Jesus was dining at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Him and His disciples—for there were many who followed Him.
WBS And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eating with publicans and sinners, they said to his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners. BSB BSB: When the scribes who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with these people, they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
WBS When Jesus heard it , he saith to them, They that are in health, have no need of a physician, but they that are sick; I came not to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance. BSB BSB: On hearing this, Jesus told them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Questions about Fasting (Matthew 9:14–15; Luke 5:33–35)
WBS And the disciples of John, and of the Pharisees, used to fast: and they come, and say to him, Why do the disciples of John, and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? BSB BSB: Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were often fasting. So people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t Your disciples fast like John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees?”
WBS And Jesus said to them, Can the children of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? As long as He is with them, they cannot fast.
WBS But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then they will fast in those days. BSB BSB: But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
The Patches and the Wineskins (Matthew 9:16–17; Luke 5:36–39)
WBS No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up, taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. BSB BSB: No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, and a worse tear will result.
WBS And no man putteth new wine into old bottles, else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles. BSB BSB: And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.”
The Lord of the Sabbath (1 Samuel 21:1–7; Matthew 12:1–8; Luke 6:1–5)
WBS And the Pharisees said to him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath that which is not lawful? BSB BSB: So the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
WBS How he went into the house of God, in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the show-bread, which it is not lawful to eat, but for the priests, and gave also to them who were with him? BSB BSB: During the high priesthood of Abiathar, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which was lawful only for the priests. And he gave some to his companions as well.”
WBS And he said to them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: BSB BSB: Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
WBS Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. BSB BSB: Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
