The Parable of the Ten Virgins 1 WBS Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened to ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. BSB BSB: “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
WBS And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. BSB BSB: Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
WBS They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: BSB BSB: The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take along any extra oil.
WBS But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. BSB BSB: But the wise ones took oil in flasks along with their lamps.
WBS While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. BSB BSB: When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
WBS And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. BSB BSB: At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
WBS Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. BSB BSB: Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
WBS And the foolish said to the wise, Give us of your oil: for our lamps are gone out. BSB BSB: The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
WBS But the wise answered, saying, Not so ; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. BSB BSB: ‘No,’ said the wise ones, ‘or there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
WBS And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready, went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut. BSB BSB: But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.
WBS Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. BSB BSB: Later the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open the door for us!’
WBS But he answered and said, Verily I say to you, I know you not. BSB BSB: But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’
WBS Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of man cometh. BSB BSB: Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
The Parable of the Talents (Luke 19:11–27)
WBS For the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered to them his goods. BSB BSB: For it is just like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted them with his possessions.
WBS And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and forthwith took his journey. BSB BSB: To one he gave five talents, to another two talents, and to another one talent—each according to his own ability. And he went on his journey.
WBS Then he that had received the five talents, went and traded with the same, and gained other five talents. BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents went at once and put them to work and gained five more.
WBS And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. BSB BSB: Likewise, the one with the two talents gained two more.
WBS But he that had received one, went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. BSB BSB: But the servant who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.
WBS After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. BSB BSB: After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
WBS And he that had received five talents, came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst to me five talents: behold, I have gained besides them five talents more. BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents came and presented five more. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’
WBS His lord said to him, Well done thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’
WBS He also that had received two talents came, and said, Lord, thou deliveredst to me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents besides them. BSB BSB: The servant who had received the two talents also came and said, ‘Master, you entrusted me with two talents. See, I have gained two more.’
WBS His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’
WBS Then he who had received the one talent came, and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strewed: BSB BSB: Finally, the servant who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Master, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
WBS And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast what is thine. BSB BSB: So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what belongs to you.’
WBS His lord answered and said to him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not strewed: BSB BSB: ‘You wicked, lazy servant!’ replied his master. ‘You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed.
WBS Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received my own with interest. BSB BSB: Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received it back with interest.
WBS Take therefore the talent from him, and give it to him who hath ten talents. BSB BSB: Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents.
WBS For to every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. BSB BSB: For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
WBS And cast ye the unprofitable servant into utter darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. BSB BSB: And throw that worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
The Sheep and the Goats 32 WBS And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: BSB BSB: All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
WBS And he will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. BSB BSB: He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.
WBS Then will the King say to them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: BSB BSB: Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
WBS For I was hungry, and ye gave me food: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in,
WBS Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came to me. BSB BSB: I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’
WBS Then will the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, and fed thee ? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? BSB BSB: Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?
WBS When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee ? BSB BSB: When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?
WBS Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came to thee? BSB BSB: When did we see You sick or in prison and visit You?’
WBS And the king will answer and say to them, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as ye have done it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it to me. BSB BSB: And the King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’
WBS Then will he say also to them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: BSB BSB: Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
WBS For I was hungry, and ye gave me no food: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink,
WBS I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. BSB BSB: I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after Me.’
WBS Then will they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to thee? BSB BSB: And they too will reply, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’
WBS Then will he answer them, saying, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. BSB BSB: Then the King will answer, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.’
WBS And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. BSB BSB: And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
