The Burden against Nineveh (Jonah 1:1–3)
WBS The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite, BSB BSB: This is the burden against Nineveh, the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:
WBS God is jealous, and the LORD avengeth; the LORD avengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. BSB BSB: The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and full of wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on His foes and reserves wrath for His enemies.
WBS The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked : the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. BSB BSB: The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. His path is in the whirlwind and storm, and clouds are the dust beneath His feet.
WBS He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth. BSB BSB: He rebukes the sea and dries it up; He makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither, and the flower of Lebanon wilts.
WBS The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, even the world, and all that dwell therein. BSB BSB: The mountains quake before Him, and the hills melt away; the earth trembles at His presence—the world and all its dwellers.
WBS Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him. BSB BSB: Who can withstand His indignation? Who can endure His burning anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; even rocks are shattered before Him.
WBS The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. BSB BSB: The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.
WBS But with an over-running flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies. BSB BSB: But with an overwhelming flood He will make an end of Nineveh and pursue His enemies into darkness.
WBS What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time. BSB BSB: Whatever you plot against the LORD, He will bring to an end. Affliction will not rise up a second time.
WBS For while they are folded together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry. BSB BSB: For they will be entangled as with thorns and consumed like the drink of a drunkard—like stubble that is fully dry.
WBS There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counselor. BSB BSB: From you, O Nineveh, comes forth a plotter of evil against the LORD, a counselor of wickedness.
WBS Thus saith the LORD; Though they are quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more. BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “Though they are allied and numerous, yet they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, O Judah, I will afflict you no longer.
WBS For now I will break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds asunder. BSB BSB: For I will now break their yoke from your neck and tear away your shackles.”
WBS And the LORD hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art vile. BSB BSB: The LORD has issued a command concerning you, O Nineveh: “There will be no descendants to carry on your name. I will cut off the carved image and cast idol from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.”
WBS Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off. BSB BSB: Look to the mountains—the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; fulfill your vows. For the wicked will never again march through you; they will be utterly cut off.
