Laws about Vows (Matthew 5:33–37)
WBS And Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded. BSB BSB: Then Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel, “This is what the LORD has commanded:
WBS If a man shall vow a vow to the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth. BSB BSB: If a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word; he must do everything he has promised.
WBS If a woman also shall vow a vow to the LORD, and bind herself by a bond, being in her father's house in her youth; BSB BSB: And if a woman in her father’s house during her youth makes a vow to the LORD or obligates herself by a pledge,
WBS And her father shall hear her vow, and her bond with which she hath bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond with which she hath bound her soul shall stand. BSB BSB: and her father hears about her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
WBS But if her father shall disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows or of her bonds with which she hath bound her soul shall stand: and the LORD shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her. BSB BSB: But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, then none of the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. The LORD will absolve her because her father has prohibited her.
WBS And if she had a husband when she vowed, or uttered aught from her lips, with which she bound her soul; BSB BSB: If a woman marries while under a vow or rash promise by which she has bound herself,
WBS And her husband heard it , and held his peace at her in the day that he heard it : then her vows shall stand, and her bonds with which she bound her soul shall stand. BSB BSB: and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her on that day, then the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
WBS But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard it ; then he shall make of no effect her vow which she vowed, and that which she uttered with her lips, with which she bound her soul: and the LORD shall forgive her. BSB BSB: But if her husband prohibits her when he hears of it, he nullifies the vow that binds her or the rash promise she has made, and the LORD will absolve her.
WBS But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, with which they have bound their souls, shall stand against her. BSB BSB: Every vow a widow or divorced woman pledges to fulfill is binding on her.
WBS And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath; BSB BSB: If a woman in her husband’s house has made a vow or put herself under an obligation with an oath,
WBS And her husband heard it , and held his peace at her, and disallowed her not: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond with which she bound her soul shall stand. BSB BSB: and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her and does not prohibit her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
WBS But if her husband hath utterly made them void on the day he heard them ; then whatever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them void; and the LORD shall forgive her. BSB BSB: But if her husband nullifies them on the day he hears of them, then nothing that came from her lips, whether her vows or pledges, shall stand. Her husband has nullified them, and the LORD will absolve her.
WBS Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void. BSB BSB: Her husband may confirm or nullify any vow or any sworn pledge to deny herself.
WBS But if her husband altogether holds his peace at her from day to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them . BSB BSB: But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he confirms all the vows and pledges that bind her. He has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard about them.
WBS But if he shall any way make them void after that he hath heard them ; then he shall bear her iniquity. BSB BSB: But if he nullifies them after he hears of them, then he will bear her iniquity.”
WBS These are the statutes which the LORD commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between the father and his daughter, being yet in her youth in her father's house. BSB BSB: These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the relationship between a man and his wife, and between a father and a young daughter still in his home.
