A Remnant Chosen by Grace 2 WBS God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Know ye not what the scripture saith of Elijah? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, BSB BSB: God did not reject His people, whom He foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he appealed to God against Israel:
WBS Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thy altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. BSB BSB: “Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well”?
WBS But what saith the answer of God to him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal. BSB BSB: And what was the divine reply to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”
WBS Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. BSB BSB: In the same way, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.
WBS And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. BSB BSB: And if it is by grace, then it is no longer by works. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.
WBS What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded. BSB BSB: What then? What Israel was seeking, it failed to obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened,
WBS (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) to this day. BSB BSB: as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see, and ears that could not hear, to this very day.”
WBS And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling-block, and a recompense to them: BSB BSB: And David says: “May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
WBS Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back always. BSB BSB: May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.”
The Ingrafting of the Gentiles 11 WBS I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? By no means: but rather through their fall salvation is come to the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy. BSB BSB: I ask then, did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Certainly not! However, because of their trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous.
WBS Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fullness? BSB BSB: But if their trespass means riches for the world, and their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring!
WBS For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify my office: BSB BSB: I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry
WBS If by any means I may incite to emulation them who are my flesh, and may save some of them. BSB BSB: in the hope that I may provoke my own people to jealousy and save some of them.
WBS For if the rejection of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be , but life from the dead? BSB BSB: For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
WBS For if the first fruit is holy, the lump is also holy : and if the root is holy, so are the branches. BSB BSB: If the first part of the dough is holy, so is the whole batch; if the root is holy, so are the branches.
WBS And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive-tree, art ingrafted among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive-tree; BSB BSB: Now if some branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others to share in the nourishment of the olive root,
WBS Boast not against the branches. But if thou boastest, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. BSB BSB: do not boast over those branches. If you do, remember this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.
WBS Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be ingrafted. BSB BSB: You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.”
WBS Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not high-minded, but fear: BSB BSB: That is correct: They were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.
WBS For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. BSB BSB: For if God did not spare the natural branches, He will certainly not spare you either.
WBS Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them who fell, severity; but towards thee, goodness, if thou shalt continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. BSB BSB: Take notice, therefore, of the kindness and severity of God: severity to those who fell, but kindness to you, if you continue in His kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.
WBS And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be ingrafted: for God is able to ingraft them again. BSB BSB: And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
WBS For if thou wast cut out of the olive-tree which is wild by nature, and wast ingrafted contrary to nature into a good olive-tree; how much more shall these, which are the natural branches , be grafted into their own olive-tree? BSB BSB: For if you were cut from a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into one that is cultivated, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
All Israel Will Be Saved 26 WBS And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: BSB BSB: And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come from Zion; He will remove godlessness from Jacob.
WBS For this is my covenant to them, when I shall take away their sins. BSB BSB: And this is My covenant with them when I take away their sins.”
WBS For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. BSB BSB: For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.
WBS For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief; BSB BSB: Just as you who formerly disobeyed God have now received mercy through their disobedience,
WBS Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. BSB BSB: so they too have now disobeyed, in order that they too may now receive mercy through the mercy shown to you.
WBS For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. BSB BSB: For God has consigned everyone to disobedience so that He may have mercy on everyone.
A Hymn of Praise (Isaiah 40:9–31)
WBS For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor? BSB BSB: “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?”
WBS Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed to him again? BSB BSB: “Who has first given to God, that God should repay him?”
WBS For from him, and by him, and to him are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. BSB BSB: For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.
