God Remains Faithful 2 WBS Much every way: chiefly, because that to them were committed the oracles of God. BSB BSB: Much in every way. First of all, they have been entrusted with the very words of God.
WBS For what if some did not believe? will their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? BSB BSB: What if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God’s faithfulness?
WBS By no means: verily let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mayest be justified in thy sayings, and mayest overcome when thou art judged. BSB BSB: Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a liar. As it is written: “So that You may be proved right when You speak and victorious when You judge.”
WBS But if our unrighteousness commendeth the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man.) BSB BSB: But if our unrighteousness highlights the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unjust to inflict His wrath on us? I am speaking in human terms.
WBS By no means: for then how shall God judge the world? BSB BSB: Certainly not! In that case, how could God judge the world?
WBS For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie to his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner? BSB BSB: However, if my falsehood accentuates God’s truthfulness, to the increase of His glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?
WBS And not rather (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. BSB BSB: Why not say, as some slanderously claim that we say, “Let us do evil that good may result”? Their condemnation is deserved!
There Is No One Righteous (Psalm 14:1–7; Psalm 53:1–6; Isaiah 59:1–17)
WBS What then? are we better than they ? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; BSB BSB: What then? Are we any better? Not at all. For we have already made the charge that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin.
WBS As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: BSB BSB: As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.
WBS There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh God. BSB BSB: There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.
WBS They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. BSB BSB: All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”
WBS Their throat is an open sepulcher; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: BSB BSB: “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The venom of vipers is on their lips.”
WBS Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. BSB BSB: “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
WBS Their feet are swift to shed blood. BSB BSB: “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
WBS Destruction and misery are in their ways: BSB BSB: ruin and misery lie in their wake,
WBS And the way of peace have they not known. BSB BSB: and the way of peace they have not known.”
WBS There is no fear of God before their eyes. BSB BSB: “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
WBS Now we know that whatever things the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. BSB BSB: Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.
WBS Therefore by the deeds of the law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. BSB BSB: Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin.
Righteousness through Faith in Christ (Philippians 3:1–11)
WBS Even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ to all, and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference: BSB BSB: And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction,
WBS Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ: BSB BSB: and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
WBS To declare, I say , at this time his righteousness: that he may be just, and the justifier of him who believeth in Jesus. BSB BSB: He did this to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus.
WBS Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:BSB BSB: Is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too,
WBS Seeing it is one God who will justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. BSB BSB: since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.
