1. The Two Adulterous Sisters

2. 1YLTAnd there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying, 'Son of man,BSBBSB: Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
3. 2YLTTwo women were daughters of one mother,BSBBSB: “Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother,
4. 3YLTAnd they go a-whoring in Egypt, In their youth they have gone a-whoring, There they have bruised their breasts, And there they have dealt with the loves of their virginity.BSBBSB: and they played in Egypt, prostituting themselves from their youth. Their breasts were fondled there, and their virgin bosoms caressed.
5. 4YLTAnd their names are Aholah the elder, And Aholibah her sister, And they are Mine, and bear sons and daughters. As to their names — Samaria is Aholah, And Jerusalem is Aholibah.BSBBSB: The older was named Oholah, and her sister was named Oholibah. They became Mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. As for their identities, Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.
6. 5YLTAnd go a-whoring doth Aholah under Me, And she doteth on her lovers, On the neighbouring Assyrians,BSBBSB: Oholah prostituted herself while she was still Mine. She lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians—warriors
7. 6YLTClothed with blue — governors and prefects, Desirable young men all of them, Horsemen, riding on horses,BSBBSB: clothed in blue, governors and commanders, all desirable young men, horsemen mounted on steeds.
8. 7YLTAnd she giveth her whoredoms on them, The choice of the sons of Asshur, All of them — even all on whom she doted, By all their idols she hath been defiled.BSBBSB: She offered sexual favors to all the elite of Assyria. She defiled herself with all the idols of those for whom she lusted.
9. 8YLTAnd her whoredoms out of Egypt she hath not forsaken, For with her they lay in her youth, And they dealt with the loves of her virginity, And they pour out their whoredoms on her.BSBBSB: She did not give up the prostitution she began in Egypt, when men slept with her in her youth, caressed her virgin bosom, and poured out their lust upon her.
10. 9YLTTherefore I have given her into the hand of her lovers, Into the hand of sons of Asshur on whom she doted.BSBBSB: Therefore I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, the Assyrians for whom she lusted.
11. 10YLTThey have uncovered her nakedness, Her sons and her daughters they have taken, And her by sword they have slain, And she is a name for women, And judgments they have done with her.BSBBSB: They exposed her nakedness, seized her sons and daughters, and put her to the sword. Thus she became a byword among women, and they executed judgment against her.
12. 11YLTAnd see doth her sister Aholibah, And she maketh her doting love more corrupt than she, And her whoredoms than the whoredoms of her sister.BSBBSB: Her sister Oholibah saw this, yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her sister.
13. 12YLTOn sons of Asshur she hath doted, Governors and prefects, Neighbouring ones — clothed in perfection, Horsemen, riding on horses, Desirable young men all of them.BSBBSB: She too lusted after the Assyrians—governors and commanders, warriors dressed in splendor, horsemen riding on steeds, all desirable young men.
14. 13YLTAnd I see that she hath been defiled, One way is to them both.BSBBSB: And I saw that she too had defiled herself; both of them had taken the same path.
15. 14YLTAnd she doth add unto her whoredoms, And she seeth graved men on the wall, Pictures of Chaldeans, graved with red lead,BSBBSB: But Oholibah carried her prostitution even further. She saw the men portrayed on the wall, images of the Chaldeans, engraved in vermilion,
16. 15YLTGirded with a girdle on their loins, Dyed attire spread out on their heads, The appearance of rulers — all of them, The likeness of sons of Babylon, Chaldea is the land of their birth.BSBBSB: wearing belts on their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like officers of the Babylonians in Chaldea, the land of their birth.
17. 16YLTAnd she doteth on them at the sight of her eyes, And sendeth messengers to them, to Chaldea.BSBBSB: At the sight of them, she lusted for them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea.
18. 17YLTAnd come in unto her do sons of Babylon, To the bed of loves, And they defile her with their whoredoms, And she is defiled with them, And her soul is alienated from them.BSBBSB: Then the Babylonians came to her, to the bed of love, and in their lust they defiled her. But after she had been defiled by them, she turned away in disgust.
19. 18YLTAnd she revealeth her whoredoms, And she revealeth her nakedness, And alienated is My soul from off her, As alienated was My soul from off her sister.BSBBSB: When Oholibah openly prostituted herself and exposed her nakedness, I turned away from her in disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister.
20. 19YLTAnd she multiplieth her whoredoms, To remember the days of her youth, When she went a-whoring in the land of Egypt.BSBBSB: Yet she multiplied her promiscuity, remembering the days of her youth, when she had prostituted herself in the land of Egypt
21. 20YLTAnd she doteth on their paramours, Whose flesh is the flesh of asses, And the issue of horses — their issue.BSBBSB: and lusted after their lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of stallions.
22. 21YLTThou lookest after the wickedness of thy youth, In dealing out of Egypt thy loves, For the sake of the breasts of thy youth.BSBBSB: So you revisited the indecency of your youth, when the Egyptians caressed your bosom and pressed your young breasts.

23. Oholibah to Be Plagued

24. 22YLTTherefore, O Aholibah, thus said the Lord Jehovah: Lo, I am stirring up thy lovers against thee, From whom thy soul hath been alienated, And have brought them in against thee from round about.BSBBSB: Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will incite your lovers against you, those from whom you turned away in disgust. And I will bring them against you from every side—
25. 23YLTSons of Babylon, and of all Chaldea, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa, All the sons of Asshur with them, Desirable young men, governors and prefects, All of them — rulers and proclaimed ones, Riding on horses, all of them.BSBBSB: the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, the men of Pekod, Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them—all desirable young men, governors and commanders, officers and men of renown, mounted on horses.
26. 24YLTAnd they have come in against thee, With arms, rider, and wheel, And with an assembly of peoples; Target, and shield, and helmet, They do set against thee round about, And I have set before them judgment, They have judged thee in their Judgments.BSBBSB: They will come against you with a host of peoples, with weapons, chariots, and wagons. They will array themselves against you on every side with buckler and shield and helmet. I will delegate judgment to them, and they will punish you according to their own standards.
27. 25YLTAnd I have set My jealousy against thee, And they have dealt with thee in fury, Thy nose and thine ears they turn aside, And thy posterity by sword falleth, They, thy sons and thy daughters do take away, And thy posterity is devoured by fire.BSBBSB: And I will set My jealous rage against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and ears, and your survivors will fall by the sword. They will seize your sons and daughters, and your remnant will be consumed by fire.
28. 26YLTAnd they have stripped thee of thy garments, And have taken thy beauteous jewels.BSBBSB: They will strip off your clothes and take your fine jewelry.
29. 27YLTAnd I have caused thy wickedness to cease from thee, And thy whoredoms out of the land of Egypt, And thou liftest not up thine eyes unto them, And Egypt thou dost not remember again.BSBBSB: So I will put an end to your indecency and prostitution, which began in the land of Egypt, and you will not lift your eyes to them or remember Egypt anymore.’
30. 28YLTFor thus said the Lord Jehovah: Lo, I am giving thee into a hand that thou hast hated, Into a hand from which thou wast alienated.BSBBSB: For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Surely I will deliver you into the hands of those you hate, from whom you turned away in disgust.
31. 29YLTAnd they have dealt with thee in hatred, And they have taken all thy labour, And they have left thee naked and bare, And revealed hath been the nakedness of thy whoredoms, And the wickedness of thy whoredoms.BSBBSB: They will treat you with hatred, take all for which you have worked, and leave you naked and bare, so that the shame of your prostitution will be exposed. Your indecency and promiscuity
32. 30YLTTo do these things to thee, In thy going a-whoring after nations, Because thou hast been defiled with their idols,BSBBSB: have brought these things upon you, because you have prostituted yourself with the nations and defiled yourself with their idols.
33. 31YLTIn the way of thy sister thou hast walked, And I have given her cup into thy hand.BSBBSB: Because you have followed the path of your sister, I will put her cup into your hand.’
34. 32YLTThus said the Lord Jehovah: The cup of thy sister thou dost drink, The deep and the wide one, (Thou art for laughter and for scorn,) Abundant to contain.BSBBSB: This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘You will drink your sister’s cup, a cup deep and wide. It will bring scorn and derision, for it holds so much.
35. 33YLTWith drunkenness and sorrow thou art filled, A cup of astonishment and desolation, The cup of thy sister Samaria.BSBBSB: You will be filled with drunkenness and grief, with a cup of devastation and desolation, the cup of your sister Samaria.
36. 34YLTAnd thou hast drunk it, and hast drained it, And its earthen ware thou dost gnaw, And thine own breasts thou pluckest off, For I have spoken, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah,BSBBSB: You will drink it and drain it; you will dash it to pieces, and tear your breasts. For I have spoken,’ declares the Lord GOD.
37. 35YLTTherefore, thus said the Lord Jehovah: Because thou hast forgotten Me, And thou dost cast Me behind thy back, Even thou also bear thy wickedness and thy whoredoms.'BSBBSB: Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because you have forgotten Me and have cast Me behind your back, you must bear the consequences of your indecency and prostitution.’”

38. Judgment on Both Sisters

39. 36YLTAnd Jehovah saith unto me, 'Son of man, Dost thou judge Aholah and Aholibah? Declare then to them their abominations.BSBBSB: Then the LORD said to me: “Son of man, will you pass judgment against Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations.
40. 37YLTFor they have committed adultery, And blood is in their hands, With their idols they committed adultery, And also their sons whom they bore to Me, They caused to pass over to them for food.BSBBSB: For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. They have committed adultery with their idols. They have even sacrificed their children, whom they bore to Me, in the fire as food for their idols.
41. 38YLTAgain, this they have done to Me, They defiled My sanctuary in that day, And My sabbaths they have polluted.BSBBSB: They have also done this to Me: On that very same day, they defiled My sanctuary and profaned My Sabbaths.
42. 39YLTAnd in their slaughtering their sons to their idols They also come in unto My sanctuary in that day to pollute it, And lo, thus they have done in the midst of My house,BSBBSB: On the very day they slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered My sanctuary to profane it. Yes, they did this inside My house.
43. 40YLTAnd also that they send to men coming from afar, Unto whom a messenger is sent, And lo, they have come in for whom thou hast washed, Painted thine eyes, and put on adornment.BSBBSB: Furthermore, you sisters sent messengers for men who came from afar; and behold, when they arrived, you bathed for them, painted your eyes, and adorned yourself with jewelry.
44. 41YLTAnd thou hast sat on a couch of honour, And a table arrayed before it, And My perfume and My oil placed on it.BSBBSB: You sat on a couch of luxury with a table spread before it, on which you had set My incense and My oil,
45. 42YLTAnd the voice of a multitude at ease is with her, And unto men of the common people are brought in Sabeans from the wilderness, And they put bracelets on their hands, And a beauteous crown on their heads.BSBBSB: accompanied by the sound of a carefree crowd. Drunkards were brought in from the desert along with men from the rabble, who put bracelets on your wrists and beautiful crowns on your head.
46. 43YLTAnd I say of the worn-out one in adulteries, Now they commit her whoredoms — she also!BSBBSB: Then I said of her who had grown old in adulteries: ‘Now let them use her as a prostitute, for that is all she is!’
47. 44YLTAnd they come in unto her, As the coming in unto a whorish woman, So they have come in unto Aholah, And unto Aholibah — the wicked women.BSBBSB: And they slept with her as with a prostitute; they slept with Oholah and Oholibah, those lewd women.
48. 45YLTAs to righteous men, they judge them with the judgment of adulteresses, And the judgment of women shedding blood, For they are adulteresses, And blood is in their hands.BSBBSB: But righteous men will sentence them to the punishment of those who commit adultery and bloodshed, because they are adulteresses with blood on their hands.
49. 46YLTFor thus said the Lord Jehovah: Bring up against them an assembly, And give them to trembling and to spoiling.BSBBSB: This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Bring a mob against them and consign them to terror and plunder.
50. 47YLTAnd they have cast at them the stone of the assembly, And cut them with their swords, Their sons and their daughters they do slay, And their houses with fire they burn.BSBBSB: The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords. They will kill their sons and daughters and burn down their houses.
51. 48YLTAnd I have caused wickedness to cease from the land, And instructed have been all the women, And they do not according to your wickedness.BSBBSB: So I will put an end to indecency in the land, and all the women will be admonished not to imitate your behavior.
52. 49YLTAnd they have put your wickedness on you, And the sins of your idols ye bear, And ye have known that I am the Lord Jehovah!BSBBSB: They will repay you for your indecency, and you will bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.’”
