The Beatitudes (Psalm 1:1–6; Matthew 5:3–12)
AKJV And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be you poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. BSB BSB: Looking up at His disciples, Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
AKJV Blessed are you that hunger now: for you shall be filled. Blessed are you that weep now: for you shall laugh. BSB BSB: Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
AKJV Blessed are you, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake. BSB BSB: Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man.
AKJV Rejoice you in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers to the prophets. BSB BSB: Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For their fathers treated the prophets in the same way.
Woes to the Satisfied (Amos 6:1–7)
AKJV But woe to you that are rich! for you have received your consolation. BSB BSB: But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.
AKJV Woe to you that are full! for you shall hunger. Woe to you that laugh now! for you shall mourn and weep. BSB BSB: Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
AKJV Woe to you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. BSB BSB: Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers treated the false prophets in the same way.
Love Your Enemies (Matthew 5:38–48)
AKJV But I say to you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, BSB BSB: But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
AKJV Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which spitefully use you. BSB BSB: bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
AKJV And to him that smites you on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that takes away your cloak forbid not to take your coat also. BSB BSB: If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well.
AKJV Give to every man that asks of you; and of him that takes away your goods ask them not again. BSB BSB: Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back.
AKJV And as you would that men should do to you, do you also to them likewise. BSB BSB: Do to others as you would have them do to you.
AKJV For if you love them which love you, what thank have you? for sinners also love those that love them. BSB BSB: If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
AKJV And if you do good to them which do good to you, what thank have you? for sinners also do even the same. BSB BSB: If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.
AKJV And if you lend to them of whom you hope to receive, what thank have you? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. BSB BSB: And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.
AKJV But love you your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind to the unthankful and to the evil. BSB BSB: But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
AKJV Be you therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. BSB BSB: Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Judging Others (Matthew 7:1–6; Romans 14:1–12)
AKJV Judge not, and you shall not be judged: condemn not, and you shall not be condemned: forgive, and you shall be forgiven: BSB BSB: Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
AKJV Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you mete with it shall be measured to you again. BSB BSB: Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”
AKJV And he spoke a parable to them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? BSB BSB: Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
AKJV The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. BSB BSB: A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.
AKJV And why behold you the mote that is in your brother’s eye, but perceive not the beam that is in your own eye? BSB BSB: Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?
AKJV Either how can you say to your brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in your eye, when you yourself behold not the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of your own eye, and then shall you see clearly to pull out the mote that is in your brother’s eye. BSB BSB: How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while you yourself fail to see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit (Matthew 7:15–23; Matthew 12:33–37)
AKJV For a good tree brings not forth corrupt fruit; neither does a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. BSB BSB: No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
AKJV For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. BSB BSB: For each tree is known by its own fruit. Indeed, figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor grapes from brambles.
AKJV A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. BSB BSB: The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.
The House on the Rock (Matthew 7:24–27)
AKJV And why call you me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? BSB BSB: Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but do not do what I say?
AKJV Whoever comes to me, and hears my sayings, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like: BSB BSB: I will show you what he is like who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them:
AKJV He is like a man which built an house, and dig deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently on that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded on a rock. BSB BSB: He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the torrent crashed against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
AKJV But he that hears, and does not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house on the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. BSB BSB: But the one who hears My words and does not act on them is like a man who built his house on ground without a foundation. The torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it fell—and great was its destruction!”
