ARST Then Adam had{ marital} relations with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to{ a son they named} Cain,{ which means“obtained.”}{ They named him that} because she said,“Yahweh has enabled me to obtain a son!” BSB BSB: And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said.
ARST Then Eve also gave birth to Cain’ s brother{ whom they named} Abel.{ When they grew up,} Abel became a shepherd, and Cain became a{ crop} farmer. BSB BSB: Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil.
ARST As time went by, one day Cain gave some of the crops{ that he had grown} in his fields to Yahweh as a gift{ to honor him}. BSB BSB: So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD,
ARST Abel also gave{ a gift}{ to Yahweh},{ but what he gave was} some of the firstborn animals from his flock{ s}, including some of their best parts. Yahweh was pleased with Abel and his gift. BSB BSB: while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
ARST However, he was not pleased with Cain or his gift. So Cain became extremely angry, and he frowned. BSB BSB: but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.
ARST Then Yahweh asked him,“Why are you so angry? And why are you frowning? BSB BSB: “Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen?
ARST If you do{ what is} right, I will accept{ you}{ and your offering}. But if you do not do{ what is} right, then sin{ is like a fierce animal that} is waiting outside your door{ to attack you}. It wants{ to control} you, but you must control it{ so that you do not sin}.” BSB BSB: If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
ARST But{ after that,} Cain said to his brother Abel,“Let’ s go out to the field{ to work}{ together}.” So{ they went out} to the field, and while they were there, Cain attacked his brother and murdered him. BSB BSB: Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
ARST Later Yahweh asked Cain,“Where{ is} your brother Abel?” Cain responded,“I don’ t know{ where he is}. Is it my job to take care of my brother?” BSB BSB: And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
ARST Then Yahweh said{ to him},“You have done a terrible thing! I see your brother’ s blood on the ground, and I must punish you{ for killing him}! BSB BSB: “What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
ARST So from now on I am cursing you{ so that you will not be able to grow food} from the ground, which is where your brother’ s blood spilled out when you murdered him. BSB BSB: Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
ARST Whenever you{ try to} farm the ground, it will no longer produce good crops for you.{ From now on,} you will be an outcast who wanders around on the earth{ without a permanent home}.” BSB BSB: When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
ARST Cain replied to Yahweh,“You are punishing me more{ severely} than I can endure. BSB BSB: But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
ARST Look, you have now banished me from{ farming} the ground, and I will be far away from you. I will be a homeless fugitive on the earth, so that whoever sees me will kill me!” BSB BSB: Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
ARST Yahweh replied to him,“So then,{ I will warn everyone that} I will take vengeance on whoever kills you{ and punish him} seven times more{ severely}{ than I am punishing you}!” Then he put a mark on Cain to warn everyone who met him not to kill him. BSB BSB: “Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him.
ARST Then Cain left Yahweh’ s presence and lived in the region of Nod,{ which means“wandering,”}{ which was} east of{ the region of} Eden. 4:17-24 BSB BSB: So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
ARST Then Cain had{ marital} relations with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to{ a son they named} Enoch.{ At that time} Cain was building a city, so he named the city after his son Enoch. BSB BSB: And Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch.
ARST When Enoch{ grew up,} he had{ a son named} Irad. Then Irad had{ a son named} Mehujael. Then Mehujael had{ a son named} Methushael. Then Methushael had{ a son named} Lamech. BSB BSB: Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech.
ARST When Lamech{ grew up,} he married two wives. His first wife’ s name was Adah, and his other wife’ s name was Zillah. BSB BSB: And Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
ARST Adah gave birth to{ a son named} Jabal. He{ grew up and} became the first of{ all} those who live{ in} tents and raise livestock{ for a living}. BSB BSB: Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock.
ARST His brother’ s name was Jubal. He became the first of all{ those} who play harps and flutes. BSB BSB: And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
ARST { Lamech’ s other wife} Zillah also gave birth to{ a son named} Tubal Cain. He{ was the first of all those who} make all{ kinds} of tools{ and other things} out of bronze and iron. Tubal Cain had a sister{ whose name was} Naamah. BSB BSB: And Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
ARST { One day,} Lamech bragged to his{ two} wives,“Adah and Zillah, listen to what I have to say. My wives, listen to this: I killed a young man for wounding me! In fact,{ I killed} that man{ just} because he bruised me. BSB BSB: Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
ARST God will avenge Cain seven times, but{ I,} Lamech{ avenge myself} 77 times!” 4:25-26 BSB BSB: If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
ARST Then Adam had{ marital} relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and she named him Seth,{ which means“given.”}{ She named him that} because{ when he was born,}{ she had said},“God has given me another child to replace Abel, whom Cain killed.” BSB BSB: And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”
ARST Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. During that time people began to worship{ God} by using His name Yahweh. BSB BSB: And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD.
