The Tower of Babel (Deuteronomy 32:8; Acts 2:1–13)
Brenton And all the earth was one lip, and there was one language to all. BSB BSB: Now the whole world had one language and a common form of speech.
Brenton And it came to pass as they moved from the east, they found a plain in the land of Senaar, and they dwelt there. BSB BSB: And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
Brenton And a man said to his neighbour, Come, let us make bricks and bake them with fire. And the brick was to them for stone, and their mortar was bitumen. BSB BSB: And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar.
Brenton And they said, Come, let us build to ourselves a city and tower, whose top shall be to heaven, and let us make to ourselves a name, before we are scattered abroad upon the face of all the earth. BSB BSB: “Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.”
Brenton And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men built. BSB BSB: Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building.
Brenton And the Lord said, Behold, there is one race, and one lip of all, and they have begun to do this, and now nothing shall fail from them of all that they may have undertaken to do. BSB BSB: And the LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then nothing they devise will be beyond them.
Brenton Come, and having gone down let us there confound their tongue, that they may not understand each the voice of his neighbour. BSB BSB: Come, let Us go down and confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
Brenton And the Lord scattered them thence over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city and the tower. BSB BSB: So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
Brenton On this account its name was called Confusion, because there the Lord confounded the languages of all the earth, and thence the Lord scattered them upon the face of all the earth. BSB BSB: That is why it is called Babel, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole world, and from that place the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.
