Genesis 6 Genesis 6
The flood and the nations
Corruption on the Earth (Matthew 24:36–51)
Brenton And it came to pass when men began to be numerous upon the earth, and daughters were born to them, BSB BSB: Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them,
Brenton that the sons of God having seen the daughters of men that they were beautiful, took to themselves wives of all whom they chose. BSB BSB: the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives whomever they chose.
Brenton And the Lord God said, My Spirit shall certainly not remain among these men for ever, because they are flesh, but their days shall be an hundred and twenty years. BSB BSB: So the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days shall be 120 years.”
Brenton Now the giants were upon the earth in those days; and after that when the sons of God were wont to go in to the daughters of men, they bore children to them, those were the giants of old, the men of renown. BSB BSB: The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and afterward as well—when the sons of God had relations with the daughters of men. And they bore them children who became the mighty men of old, men of renown.
Brenton then God laid it to heart that he had made man upon the earth, and he pondered it deeply. BSB BSB: And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
Brenton And God said, I will blot out man whom I have made from the face of the earth, even man with cattle, and reptiles with flying creatures of the sky, for I am grieved that I have made them. BSB BSB: So the LORD said, “I will blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—every man and beast and crawling creature and bird of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them.”
Noah’s Favor with God 8 Brenton But Noe found grace before the Lord God. BSB BSB: Noah, however, found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
Brenton And these are the generations of Noe. Noe was a just man; being perfect in his generation, Noe was well-pleasing to God. BSB BSB: This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God.
Brenton And Noe begot three sons, Sem, Cham, Japheth. BSB BSB: And Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Brenton But the earth was corrupted before God, and the earth was filled with iniquity. BSB BSB: Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and full of violence.
Brenton And the Lord God saw the earth, and it was corrupted; because all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth. BSB BSB: And God looked upon the earth and saw that it was corrupt; for all living creatures on the earth had corrupted their ways.
Preparing the Ark (Hebrews 11:7)
Brenton And the Lord God said to Noe, A period of all men is come before me; because the earth has been filled with iniquity by them, and, behold, I destroy them and the earth. BSB BSB: Then God said to Noah, “The end of all living creatures has come before Me, because through them the earth is full of violence. Now behold, I will destroy both them and the earth.
Brenton Make therefore for thyself an ark of square timber; thou shalt make the ark in compartments, and thou shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. BSB BSB: Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark and coat it with pitch inside and out.
Brenton And thus shalt thou make the ark; three hundred cubits the length of the ark, and fifty cubits the breadth, and thirty cubits the height of it. BSB BSB: And this is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.
Brenton Thou shalt narrow the ark in making it, and in a cubit above thou shalt finish it, and the door of the ark thou shalt make on the side; with lower, second, and third stories thou shalt make it. BSB BSB: You are to make a roof for the ark, finish its walls a cubit from the top, place a door in the side of the ark, and build lower, middle, and upper decks.
Brenton And behold I bring a flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven, and whatsoever things are upon the earth shall die. BSB BSB: And behold, I will bring floodwaters upon the earth to destroy every creature under the heavens that has the breath of life. Everything on the earth will perish.
Brenton And I will establish my covenant with thee, and thou shalt enter into the ark, and thy sons and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. BSB BSB: But I will establish My covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.
Brenton And of all cattle and of all reptiles and of all wild beasts, even of all flesh, thou shalt bring by pairs of all, into the ark, that thou mayest feed them with thyself: male and female they shall be. BSB BSB: And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark—male and female—to keep them alive with you.
Brenton Of all winged birds after their kind, and of all cattle after their kind, and of all reptiles creeping upon the earth after their kind, pairs of all shall come in to thee, male and female to be fed with thee. BSB BSB: Two of every kind of bird and animal and crawling creature will come to you to be kept alive.
Brenton And thou shalt take to thyself of all kinds of food which ye eat, and thou shalt gather them to thyself, and it shall be for thee and them to eat. BSB BSB: You are also to take for yourself every kind of food that is eaten and gather it as food for yourselves and for the animals.”
Brenton And Noe did all things whatever the Lord God commanded him, so did he. BSB BSB: So Noah did everything precisely as God had commanded him.
