1And the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sina, in the tabernacle of witness, on the first day of the second month, in the second year of their departure from the land of Egypt, saying,On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. He said:

2Take the sum of all the congregation of Israel according to their kindreds, according to the houses of their fathers' families, according to their number by their names, according to their heads: every male“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.

3from twenty years old and upwards, every one that goes forth in the forces of Israel, take account of them with their strength; thou and Aaron take account of them.You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions—everyone who can serve in Israel’s army.

4And with you there shall be each one of the rulers according to the tribe of each: they shall be according to the houses of their families.And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you.

5And these are the names of the men who shall be present with you; of the tribe of Ruben, Elisur the son of Sediur.These are the names of the men who are to assist you: From the tribe of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;

6Of Symeon, Salamiel the son of Surisadai.from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;

7Of Juda, Naasson the son of Aminadab.from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;

8Of Issachar, Nathanael the son of Sogar.from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar;

9Of Zabulon, Eliab the son of Chælon.from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon;

10Of the sons of Joseph, of Ephraim, Elisama the son of Emiud: of Manasses, Gamaliel the son of Phadasur.from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;

11Of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gadeoni.from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni;

12Of Dan, Achiezer the son of Amisadai.from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;

13Of Aser, Phagaiel the son of Echran.from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran;

14Of Gad, Elisaph the son of Raguel.from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel;

15Of Nephthali, Achire the son of Ænan.and from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.”

16These were famous men of the congregation, heads of the tribes according to their families: these are heads of thousands in Israel.These men were appointed from the congregation; they were the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Israel.

17And Moses and Aaron took these men who were called by name.So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,

18And they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the month in the second year; and they registered them after their lineage, after their families, after the number of their names, from twenty years old and upwards, every male according to their number:and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years of age or older,

19as the Lord commanded Moses, so they were numbered in the wilderness of Sina.just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai:

20And the sons of Ruben the first-born of Israel according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their heads, were—all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that went out with the host—From the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

21the numbering of them of the tribe of Ruben, was forty-six thousand and four hundred.those registered to the tribe of Reuben numbered 46,500.

22For the children of Symeon according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes out with the host,From the sons of Simeon, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

23the numbering of them of the tribe of Symeon, was fifty-nine thousand and three hundred.those registered to the tribe of Simeon numbered 59,300.

24For the sons of Juda according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes forth with the host,From the sons of Gad, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

25the numbering of them of the tribe of Juda, was seventy-four thousand and six hundred.those registered to the tribe of Gad numbered 45,650.

26For the sons of Issachar according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes forth with the host,From the sons of Judah, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

27the numbering of them of the tribe of Issachar, was fifty-four thousand and four hundred.those registered to the tribe of Judah numbered 74,600.

28For the sons of Zabulon according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes out with the host,From the sons of Issachar, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

29the numbering of them of the tribe of Zabulon, was fifty-seven thousand and four hundred.those registered to the tribe of Issachar numbered 54,400.

30For the sons of Joseph, the sons of Ephraim, according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes out with the host,From the sons of Zebulun, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

31the numbering of them of the tribe of Ephraim, was forty thousand and five hundred.those registered to the tribe of Zebulun numbered 57,400.

32For the sons of Manasse according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes out with the host,From the sons of Joseph: From the sons of Ephraim, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

33the numbering of them of the tribe of Manasse, was thirty-two thousand and two hundred.those registered to the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500.

34For the sons of Benjamin according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes forth with the host,And from the sons of Manasseh, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

35the numbering of them of the tribe of Benjamin, was thirty-five thousand and four hundred.those registered to the tribe of Manasseh numbered 32,200.

36For the sons of Gad according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes forth with the host,From the sons of Benjamin, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

37the numbering of them of the tribe of Gad, was forty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty.those registered to the tribe of Benjamin numbered 35,400.

38For the sons of Dan according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes forth with the host,From the sons of Dan, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

39the numbering of them of the tribe of Dan, was sixty and two thousand and seven hundred.those registered to the tribe of Dan numbered 62,700.

40For the sons of Aser according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes forth with the host,From the sons of Asher, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

41the numbering of them of the tribe of Aser, was forty and one thousand and five hundred.those registered to the tribe of Asher numbered 41,500.

42For the sons of Nephthali according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, every one who goes forth with the host,From the sons of Naphtali, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army,

43the numbering of them of the tribe of Nephthali, was fifty-three thousand and four hundred.those registered to the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400.

44This is the numbering which Moses and Aaron and the rulers of Israel, being twelve men, conducted: there was a man for each tribe, they were according to the tribe of the houses of their family.These were the men numbered by Moses and Aaron, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family.

45And the whole numbering of the children of Israel with their host from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes out to set himself in battle array in Israel, came toSo all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.

46six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.And all those counted totaled 603,550.

47But the Levites of the tribe of their family were not counted among the children of Israel.The Levites, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers.

48And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,For the LORD had said to Moses:

49See, thou shalt not muster the tribe of Levi, and thou shalt not take their numbers, in the midst of the children of Israel.“Do not number the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites.

50And do thou set the Levites over the tabernacle of witness, and over all its furniture, and over all things that are in it; and they shall do service in it, and they shall encamp round about the tabernacle.Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.

51And in removing the tabernacle, the Levites shall take it down, and in pitching the tabernacle they shall set it up: and let the stranger that advances to touch it die.Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.

52And the children of Israel shall encamp, every man in his own order, and every man according to his company, with their host.The Israelites are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own standard.

53But let the Levites encamp round about the tabernacle of witness fronting it, and so there shall be no sin among the children of Israel; and the Levites themselves shall keep the guard of the tabernacle of witness.But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Israel. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.”

54And the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.Thus the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
