The Sons of Israel (Genesis 35:21–26; Genesis 38:1–30)
1 CPDV And the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun, BSB BSB: These were the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,
2 CPDV Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. BSB BSB: Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
3 CPDV The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, and Shelah. These three were born to him from the daughter of Shua, the Canaanite. But Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil in the sight of the Lord, and so he killed him. BSB BSB: The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, and Shelah. These three were born to him by Bath-shua the Canaanite. Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death.
4 CPDV Now Tamar, his daughter-in-law, bore to him Perez and Zerah. Therefore, all the sons of Judah were five. BSB BSB: Tamar, Judah’s daughter-in-law, bore to him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all.
5 CPDV And the sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul. BSB BSB: The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.
6 CPDV Also, the sons of Zerah: Zimri, and Ethan, and Heman, as well as Calcol and Dara, five altogether. BSB BSB: The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara—five in all.
7 CPDV The sons of Carmi: Achar, who disturbed Israel and sinned by the theft of what was anathema. BSB BSB: The son of Carmi: Achar, who brought trouble upon Israel by violating the ban on devoted things.
8 CPDV The sons of Ethan: Azariah. BSB BSB: The son of Ethan: Azariah.
9 CPDV And the sons of Hezron who were born to him: Jerahmeel, and Ram, and Chelubai. BSB BSB: The sons who were born to Hezron: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb.
10 CPDV Then Ram conceived Amminadab. And Amminadab conceived Nahshon, a leader of the sons of Judah. BSB BSB: Ram was the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, a leader of the descendants of Judah.
11 CPDV Also, Nahshon conceived Salma, from whom Boaz rose up. BSB BSB: Nahshon was the father of Salmon, and Salmon was the father of Boaz.
12 CPDV Truly, Boaz conceived Obed, who also himself conceived Jesse. BSB BSB: Boaz was the father of Obed, and Obed was the father of Jesse.
13 CPDV Now Jesse conceived the firstborn Eliab, the second Abinadab, the third Shammah, BSB BSB: Jesse was the father of Eliab his firstborn; Abinadab was born second, Shimea third,
14 CPDV the fourth Nethanel, the fifth Raddai, BSB BSB: Nethanel fourth, Raddai fifth,
15 CPDV the sixth Ozem, the seventh David. BSB BSB: Ozem sixth, and David seventh.
16 CPDV Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel, three. BSB BSB: Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. And the three sons of Zeruiah were Abishai, Joab, and Asahel.
17 CPDV And Abigail conceived Amasa, whose father was Jether, the Ishmaelite. BSB BSB: Abigail was the mother of Amasa, whose father was Jether the Ishmaelite.
18 CPDV Truly, Caleb, the son of Hezron, took a wife named Azubah, of whom he conceived Jerioth. And her sons were Jesher, and Shobab, and Ardon. BSB BSB: Caleb son of Hezron had children by his wife Azubah and by Jerioth. These were the sons of Azubah: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon.
19 CPDV And when Azubah had died, Caleb took as wife Ephratha, who bore to him Hur. BSB BSB: When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, who bore to him Hur.
20 CPDV Now Hur conceived Uri. And Uri conceived Bezalel. BSB BSB: Hur was the father of Uri, and Uri was the father of Bezalel.
21 CPDV And afterwards, Hezron entered to the daughter of Machir, father of Gilead. And he took her when he was sixty years old. And she bore to him Segub. BSB BSB: Later, Hezron slept with the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead. He had married her when he was sixty years old, and she bore to him Segub.
22 CPDV And then Segub conceived Jair, and he possessed twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. BSB BSB: Segub was the father of Jair, who had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead.
23 CPDV And he seized Geshur and Aram, towns of Jair, and Kenath and its villages, sixty cities. All these were sons of Machir, father of Gilead. BSB BSB: But Geshur and Aram captured Havvoth-jair, along with Kenath and its sixty surrounding villages. All these were descendants of Machir the father of Gilead.
24 CPDV Then, when Hezron had died, Caleb entered to Ephratha. Also, Hezron had as wife Abia, who bore to him Ashhur, the father of Tekoa. BSB BSB: After Hezron died in Caleb-ephrathah, his wife Abijah bore to him Ashhur the father of Tekoa.
25 CPDV Now sons were born to Jerahmeel, the firstborn of Hezron: Ram, his firstborn, and Bunah, and Oren, and Ozem, and Ahijah. BSB BSB: The sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron: Ram his firstborn, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah.
26 CPDV Jerahmeel also married another wife, named Atarah, who was the mother of Onam. BSB BSB: Jerahmeel had another wife named Atarah, who was the mother of Onam.
27 CPDV Then too, the sons of Ram, the firstborn of Jerahmeel, were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker. BSB BSB: The sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel: Maaz, Jamin, and Eker.
28 CPDV And Onam had sons: Shammai and Jada. And the sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur. BSB BSB: The sons of Onam: Shammai and Jada. The sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur.
29 CPDV Truly, the name of the wife of Abishur was Abihail, who bore to him Ahban and Molid. BSB BSB: Abishur’s wife was named Abihail, and she bore to him Ahban and Molid.
30 CPDV Now the sons of Nadab were Seled and Appaim. And Seled died without children. BSB BSB: The sons of Nadab: Seled and Appaim. Seled died without children.
31 CPDV Truly, the son of Appaim was Ishi. And Ishi conceived Sheshan. Then Sheshan conceived Ahlai. BSB BSB: The son of Appaim: Ishi. The son of Ishi: Sheshan. The son of Sheshan: Ahlai.
32 CPDV But the sons of Jada, the brother of Shammai, were Jether and Jonathan. Then Jether also died without children. BSB BSB: The sons of Jada the brother of Shammai: Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without children.
33 CPDV And Jonathan conceived Peleth and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerahmeel. BSB BSB: The sons of Jonathan: Peleth and Zaza. These were the descendants of Jerahmeel.
34 CPDV Now Sheshan did not have sons, but only daughters, and an Egyptian servant named Jarha. BSB BSB: Sheshan had no sons, but only daughters. He also had an Egyptian servant named Jarha.
35 CPDV And so he gave to him his daughter as wife, who bore to him Attai. BSB BSB: Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to his servant Jarha, and she bore to him Attai.
36 CPDV Then Attai conceived Nathan, and Nathan conceived Zabad. BSB BSB: Attai was the father of Nathan, Nathan was the father of Zabad,
37 CPDV Also, Zabad conceived Ephlal, and Ephlal conceived Obed. BSB BSB: Zabad was the father of Ephlal, Ephlal was the father of Obed,
38 CPDV Obed conceived Jehu; Jehu conceived Azariah. BSB BSB: Obed was the father of Jehu, Jehu was the father of Azariah,
39 CPDV Azariah conceived Helez, and Helez conceived Eleasah. BSB BSB: Azariah was the father of Helez, Helez was the father of Elasah,
40 CPDV Eleasah conceived Sismai; Sismai conceived Shallum. BSB BSB: Elasah was the father of Sismai, Sismai was the father of Shallum,
41 CPDV Shallum conceived Jekamiah; then Jekamiah conceived Elishama. BSB BSB: Shallum was the father of Jekamiah, and Jekamiah was the father of Elishama.
42 CPDV And the sons of Caleb, the brother of Jerahmeel, were Mesha, his firstborn, who was the father of Ziph, and the sons of Mesha, the father of Hebron. BSB BSB: The sons of Caleb the brother of Jerahmeel: Mesha his firstborn, who was the father of Ziph, and Mareshah his second son, who was the father of Hebron.
43 CPDV Now the sons of Hebron were Korah, and Tapuah, and Rekem, and Shema. BSB BSB: The sons of Hebron: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema.
44 CPDV Then Shema conceived Raham, the father of Jorkeam. And Rekem conceived Shammai. BSB BSB: Shema was the father of Raham the father of Jorkeam, and Rekem was the father of Shammai.
45 CPDV The son of Shammai was Maon, and Maon was the father of Bethzur. BSB BSB: The son of Shammai was Maon, and Maon was the father of Beth-zur.
46 CPDV Now Ephah, the concubine of Caleb, bore Haran, and Moza, and Gazez. And Haran conceived Gazez. BSB BSB: Caleb’s concubine Ephah was the mother of Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Haran was the father of Gazez.
47 CPDV And the sons of Jahdai: Regem, and Jotham, and Geshan, and Pelet, and Ephah, and Shaaph. BSB BSB: The sons of Jahdai: Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph.
48 CPDV And Maacah, the concubine of Caleb, bore Sheber and Tirhanah. BSB BSB: Caleb’s concubine Maacah was the mother of Sheber and Tirhanah.
49 CPDV Then Shaaph, the father of Madmannah, conceived Sheva, the father of Machbenah, and the father of Gibea. Truly, the daughter of Caleb was Achsah. BSB BSB: She was also the mother of Shaaph father of Madmannah, and of Sheva father of Machbenah and Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Acsah.
50 CPDV These were the sons of Caleb, the son of Hur, the firstborn of Ephratha: Shobal, the father of Kiriath-jearim; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Caleb. The sons of Hur the firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim,
51 CPDV Salma, the father of Bethlehem; Hareph, the father of Bethgader. BSB BSB: Salma the father of Bethlehem, and Hareph the father of Beth-gader.
52 CPDV Now there were sons for Shobal, the father of Kiriath-jearim, who saw half the places of rest. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim: Haroeh, half the Manahathites,
53 CPDV And from the kindred of Kiriath-jearim: the Ithrites, and the Puthites, and the Shumathites, and the Mishraites. From these, the Zorathites and the Eshtaolites went forth. BSB BSB: and the clans of Kiriath-jearim—the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites, and Mishraites. From these descended the Zorathites and Eshtaolites.
54 CPDV The sons of Salma: Bethlehem, and the Netophathites, the crowns of the house of Joab, and half the places of rest of the Zorathites, BSB BSB: The descendants of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab, half the Manahathites, the Zorites,
55 CPDV as well as the families of the scribes living in Jabesh, those singing and making music, and those dwelling in tents. These are the Kenites, who went forth from Calor, the father of the house of Rechab. BSB BSB: and the clans of the scribes who lived at Jabez—the Tirathites, Shimeathites, and Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Rechab.
