Roles in Worship 1 CPDV Be imitators of me, as I also am of Christ. BSB BSB: You are to imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.
CPDV Now I praise you, brothers, because you are mindful of me in everything, in such a way as to hold to my precepts as I have handed them down to you. BSB BSB: Now I commend you for remembering me in everything and for maintaining the traditions, just as I passed them on to you.
CPDV So I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ. But the head of woman is man. Yet truly, the head of Christ is God. BSB BSB: But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
CPDV Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered disgraces his head. BSB BSB: Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.
CPDV So if a woman is not veiled, let her hair be cut off. Truly then, if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off, or to have her head shaven, then she should cover her head. BSB BSB: If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. And if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.
CPDV Certainly, a man ought not to cover his head, for he is the image and glory of God. But woman is the glory of man. BSB BSB: A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
CPDV For man is not of woman, but woman is of man. BSB BSB: For man did not come from woman, but woman from man.
CPDV And indeed, man was not created for woman, but woman was created for man. BSB BSB: Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
CPDV Therefore, a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the Angels. BSB BSB: For this reason a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.
CPDV Yet truly, man would not exist without woman, nor would woman exist without man, in the Lord. BSB BSB: In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
CPDV For just as woman came into existence from man, so also does man exist through woman. But all things are from God. BSB BSB: For just as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
CPDV Judge for yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God unveiled? BSB BSB: Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
CPDV Does not even nature herself teach you that, indeed, if a man grows his hair long, it is a disgrace for him? BSB BSB: Doesn’t nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
CPDV Yet truly, if a woman grows her hair long, it is a glory for her, because her hair has been given to her as a covering. BSB BSB: but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
CPDV But if anyone has a mind to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor does the Church of God. BSB BSB: If anyone is inclined to dispute this, we have no other practice, nor do the churches of God.
Sharing in the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:20–30; Mark 14:17–26; Luke 22:14–23)
CPDV Now I caution you, without praising, about this: that you assemble together, and not for better, but for worse. BSB BSB: In the following instructions I have no praise to offer, because your gatherings do more harm than good.
CPDV First of all, indeed, I hear that when you assemble together in the church, there are schisms among you. And I believe this, in part. BSB BSB: First of all, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.
CPDV For there must also be heresies, so that those who have been tested may be made manifest among you. BSB BSB: And indeed, there must be differences among you to show which of you are approved.
CPDV And so, when you assemble together as one, it is no longer in order to eat the Lord’s supper. BSB BSB: Now then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat.
CPDV For each one first takes his own supper to eat. And as a result, one person is hungry, while another is inebriated. BSB BSB: For as you eat, each of you goes ahead without sharing his meal. While one remains hungry, another gets drunk.
CPDV Do you not have houses, in which to eat and drink? Or do you have such contempt for the Church of God that you would confound those who do not have such contempt? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I am not praising you in this. BSB BSB: Don’t you have your own homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What can I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? No, I will not!
CPDV For I have received from the Lord what I have also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the same night that he was handed over, took bread, BSB BSB: For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread,
CPDV and giving thanks, he broke it, and said: “Take and eat. This is my body, which shall be given up for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” BSB BSB: and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
CPDV Similarly also, the cup, after he had eaten supper, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” BSB BSB: In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
CPDV For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord, until he returns. BSB BSB: For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
CPDV And so, whoever eats this bread, or drinks from the cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be liable of the body and blood of the Lord. BSB BSB: Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
CPDV But let a man examine himself, and, in this way, let him eat from that bread, and drink from that cup. BSB BSB: Each one must examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.
CPDV For whoever eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks a sentence against himself, not discerning it to be the body of the Lord. BSB BSB: For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
CPDV As a result, many are weak and sick among you, and many have fallen asleep. BSB BSB: That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
CPDV But if we ourselves were discerning, then certainly we would not be judged. BSB BSB: Now if we judged ourselves properly, we would not come under judgment.
CPDV Yet when we are judged, we are being corrected by the Lord, so that we might not be condemned along with this world. BSB BSB: But when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.
CPDV And so, my brothers, when you assemble together to eat, be attentive to one another. BSB BSB: So, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
CPDV If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you may not assemble together unto judgment. As for the rest, I will set it in order when I arrive. BSB BSB: If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you come together it will not result in judgment. And when I come, I will give instructions about the remaining matters.
