Spiritual Gifts 1 CPDV Now concerning spiritual things, I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers. BSB BSB: Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
CPDV You know that when you were Gentiles, you approached mute idols, doing what you were led to do. BSB BSB: You know that when you were pagans, you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.
CPDV Because of this, I would have you know that no one speaking in the Spirit of God utters a curse against Jesus. And no one is able to say that Jesus is Lord, except in the Holy Spirit. BSB BSB: Therefore I inform you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
CPDV Truly, there are diverse graces, but the same Spirit. BSB BSB: There are different gifts, but the same Spirit.
CPDV And there are diverse ministries, but the same Lord. BSB BSB: There are different ministries, but the same Lord.
CPDV And there are diverse works, but the same God, who works everything in everyone. BSB BSB: There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all people.
CPDV However, the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one toward what is beneficial. BSB BSB: Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
CPDV to another, in the same Spirit, faith; to another, in the one Spirit, the gift of healing; BSB BSB: to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
CPDV to another, miraculous works; to another, prophecy; to another, the discernment of spirits; to another, different kinds of languages; to another, the interpretation of words. BSB BSB: to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
CPDV But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one according to his will. BSB BSB: All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions them to each one as He determines.
The Body of Christ 13 CPDV And indeed, in one Spirit, we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether servant or free. And we all drank in the one Spirit. BSB BSB: For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free, and we were all given one Spirit to drink.
CPDV For the body, too, is not one part, but many. BSB BSB: For the body does not consist of one part, but of many.
CPDV If the foot were to say, “Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body,” would it then not be of the body? BSB BSB: If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.
CPDV And if the ear were to say, “Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body,” would it then not be of the body? BSB BSB: And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.
CPDV If the whole body were the eye, how would it hear? If the whole were hearing, how would it smell? BSB BSB: If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
CPDV But instead, God has placed the parts, each one of them, in the body, just as it has pleased him. BSB BSB: But in fact, God has arranged the members of the body, every one of them, according to His design.
CPDV So if they were all one part, how would it be a body? BSB BSB: If they were all one part, where would the body be?
CPDV But instead, there are many parts, indeed, yet one body. BSB BSB: As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
CPDV And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need for your works.” And again, the head cannot say to the feet, “You are of no use to me.” BSB BSB: The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you.” Nor can the head say to the feet, “I do not need you.”
CPDV In fact, so much more necessary are those parts of the body which seem to be weaker. BSB BSB: On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
CPDV And though we consider certain parts of the body to be less noble, we surround these with more abundant dignity, and so, those parts which are less presentable end up with more abundant respect. BSB BSB: and the parts we consider less honorable, we treat with greater honor. And our unpresentable parts are treated with special modesty,
CPDV However, our presentable parts have no such need, since God has tempered the body together, distributing the more abundant honor to that which has the need, BSB BSB: whereas our presentable parts have no such need. But God has composed the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it,
CPDV so that there might be no schism in the body, but instead the parts themselves might take care of one another. BSB BSB: so that there should be no division in the body, but that its members should have mutual concern for one another.
CPDV And so, if one part suffers anything, all the parts suffer with it. Or, if one part finds glory, all the parts rejoice with it. BSB BSB: If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
The Greater Gifts 27 CPDV Now you are the body of Christ, and parts like any part. BSB BSB: Now you are the body of Christ, and each of you is a member of it.
CPDV And indeed, God has established a certain order in the Church: first Apostles, second Prophets, third Teachers, next miracle-workers, and then the grace of healing, of helping others, of governing, of different kinds of languages, and of the interpretation of words. BSB BSB: And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, and those with gifts of healing, helping, administration, and various tongues.
CPDV Are all Apostles? Are all Prophets? Are all Teachers? BSB BSB: Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
CPDV Are all workers of miracles? Do all have the grace of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? BSB BSB: Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
CPDV But be zealous for the better charisms. And I reveal to you a yet more excellent way. BSB BSB: But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.
