Unity in the Body (Psalm 133:1–3; 1 Corinthians 1:10–17)
CPDV with all humility and meekness, with patience, supporting one another in charity. BSB BSB: with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
CPDV one Lord, one faith, one baptism, BSB BSB: one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
CPDV one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all. BSB BSB: one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
CPDV Yet to each one of us there has been given grace according to the measure allotted by Christ. BSB BSB: Now to each one of us grace has been given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
CPDV Because of this, he says: “Ascending on high, he took captivity itself captive; he gave gifts to men.” BSB BSB: This is why it says: “When He ascended on high, He led captives away, and gave gifts to men.”
CPDV Now that he has ascended, what is left except for him also to descend, first to the lower parts of the earth? BSB BSB: What does “He ascended” mean, except that He also descended to the lower parts of the earth?
CPDV He who descended is the same one who also ascended above all the heavens, so that he might fulfill everything. BSB BSB: He who descended is the very One who ascended above all the heavens, in order to fill all things.
CPDV And the same one granted that some would be Apostles, and some Prophets, yet truly others evangelists, and others pastors and teachers, BSB BSB: And it was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,
CPDV for the sake of the perfection of the saints, by the work of the ministry, in the edification of the body of Christ, BSB BSB: to equip the saints for works of ministry and to build up the body of Christ,
CPDV until we all meet in the unity of faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as a perfect man, in the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ. BSB BSB: until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ.
CPDV So may we then no longer be little children, disturbed and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the wickedness of men, and by the craftiness which deceives unto error. BSB BSB: Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming.
CPDV Instead, acting according to truth in charity, we should increase in everything, in him who is the head, Christ himself. BSB BSB: Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head.
CPDV For in him, the whole body is joined closely together, by every underlying joint, through the function allotted to each part, bringing improvement to the body, toward its edification in charity. BSB BSB: From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love through the work of each individual part.
New Life in Christ (Colossians 3:1–17)
CPDV And so, I say this, and I testify in the Lord: that from now on you should walk, not as the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind, BSB BSB: So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.
CPDV having their intellect obscured, being alienated from the life of God, through the ignorance that is within them, because of the blindness of their hearts. BSB BSB: They are darkened in their understanding and alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts.
CPDV Such as these, despairing, have given themselves over to sexual immorality, carrying out every impurity with rapacity. BSB BSB: Having lost all sense of shame, they have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity, with a craving for more.
CPDV But this is not what you have learned in Christ. BSB BSB: But this is not the way you came to know Christ.
CPDV For certainly, you have listened to him, and you have been instructed in him, according to the truth that is in Jesus: BSB BSB: Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him—in keeping with the truth that is in Jesus—
CPDV to set aside your earlier behavior, the former man, who was corrupted, by means of desire, unto error, BSB BSB: to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
CPDV and so be renewed in the spirit of your mind, BSB BSB: to be renewed in the spirit of your minds;
CPDV and so put on the new man, who, in accord with God, is created in justice and in the holiness of truth. BSB BSB: and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
CPDV Because of this, setting aside lying, speak the truth, each one with his neighbor. For we are all part of one another. BSB BSB: Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one another.
CPDV “Be angry, but do not be willing to sin.” Do not let the sun set over your anger. BSB BSB: “Be angry, yet do not sin.” Do not let the sun set upon your anger,
CPDV Provide no place for the devil. BSB BSB: and do not give the devil a foothold.
CPDV Whoever was stealing, let him now not steal, but rather let him labor, working with his hands, doing what is good, so that he may have something to distribute to those who suffer need. BSB BSB: He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need.
CPDV Let no evil words proceed from your mouth, but only what is good, toward the edification of faith, so as to bestow grace upon those who listen. BSB BSB: Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen.
CPDV And do not be willing to grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you have been sealed, unto the day of redemption. BSB BSB: And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
CPDV Let all bitterness and anger and indignation and outcry and blasphemy be taken away from you, along with all malice. BSB BSB: Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice.
CPDV And be kind and merciful to one another, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven you in Christ. BSB BSB: Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.
