The Feeding of the Five Thousand (Matthew 14:13–21; Mark 6:30–44; Luke 9:10–17)
CPDV After these things, Jesus traveled across the sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. BSB BSB: After this, Jesus crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias).
CPDV And a great multitude was following him, for they saw the signs that he was accomplishing toward those who were infirm. BSB BSB: A large crowd followed Him because they saw the signs He was performing on the sick.
CPDV Therefore, Jesus went onto a mountain, and he sat down there with his disciples. BSB BSB: Then Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down with His disciples.
CPDV Now the Passover, the feast day of the Jews, was near. BSB BSB: Now the Jewish Feast of the Passover was near.
CPDV And so, when Jesus had lifted up his eyes and had seen that a very great multitude came to him, he said to Philip, “From where should we buy bread, so that these may eat?” BSB BSB: When Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?”
CPDV But he said this to test him. For he himself knew what he would do. BSB BSB: But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do.
CPDV Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii of bread would not be sufficient for each of them to receive even a little.” BSB BSB: Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a small piece.”
CPDV One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him: BSB BSB: One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,
CPDV “There is a certain boy here, who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are these among so many?” BSB BSB: “Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?”
CPDV Then Jesus said, “Have the men sit down to eat.” Now, there was much grass in that place. And so the men, in number about five thousand, sat down to eat. BSB BSB: “Have the people sit down,” Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them.
CPDV Therefore, Jesus took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he distributed it to those who were sitting down to eat; similarly also, from the fish, as much as they wanted. BSB BSB: Then Jesus took the loaves and the fish, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.
CPDV Then, when they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments that are left over, lest they be lost.” BSB BSB: And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over, so that nothing will be wasted.”
CPDV And so they gathered, and they filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which were left over from those who had eaten. BSB BSB: So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
CPDV And so, when he realized that they were going to come and take him away and make him king, Jesus fled back to the mountain, by himself alone. BSB BSB: Then Jesus, realizing that they were about to come and make Him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by Himself.
Jesus Walks on Water (Matthew 14:22–33; Mark 6:45–52)
CPDV Then, when evening arrived, his disciples descended to the sea. BSB BSB: When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
CPDV And when they had climbed into a boat, they went across the sea to Capernaum. And darkness had now arrived, and Jesus had not returned to them. BSB BSB: got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus had not yet gone out to them.
CPDV Then the sea was stirred up by a great wind that was blowing. BSB BSB: A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated.
CPDV And so, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat, and they were afraid. BSB BSB: When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the sea—and they were terrified.
CPDV But he said to them: “It is I. Do not be afraid.” BSB BSB: But Jesus spoke up: “It is I; do not be afraid.”
CPDV Therefore, they were willing to receive him into the boat. But immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going. BSB BSB: Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
Jesus the Bread of Life 22 CPDV On the next day, the crowd which was standing across the sea saw that there were no other small boats in that place, except one, and that Jesus had not entered into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had departed alone. BSB BSB: The next day, the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not boarded it with His disciples, but they had gone away alone.
CPDV Yet truly, other boats came over from Tiberias, next to the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks. BSB BSB: However, some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
CPDV Therefore, when the crowd had seen that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they climbed into the small boats, and they went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. BSB BSB: So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Him.
CPDV And when they had found him across the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” BSB BSB: When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”
CPDV Jesus answered them and said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen signs, but because you have eaten from the bread and were satisfied. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
CPDV Do not work for food that perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.” BSB BSB: Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”
CPDV Therefore, they said to him, “What should we do, so that we may labor in the works of God?” BSB BSB: Then they inquired, “What must we do to perform the works of God?”
CPDV Jesus responded and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he sent.” BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”
CPDV And so they said to him: “Then what sign will you do, so that we may see it and believe in you? What will you work? BSB BSB: So they asked Him, “What sign then will You perform, so that we may see it and believe You? What will You do?
CPDV Our fathers ate manna in the desert, just as it has been written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” BSB BSB: Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
CPDV Therefore, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
CPDV For the bread of God is he who descends from heaven and gives life to the world.” BSB BSB: For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
CPDV And so they said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.” BSB BSB: “Sir,” they said, “give us this bread at all times.”
CPDV Then Jesus said to them: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.
CPDV But I say to you, that even though you have seen me, you do not believe. BSB BSB: But as I stated, you have seen Me and still you do not believe.
CPDV Yet this is the will of the Father who sent me: that I should lose nothing out of all that he has given to me, but that I should raise them up on the last day. BSB BSB: And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day.
CPDV So then, this is the will of my Father who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” BSB BSB: For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”
CPDV Therefore, the Jews murmured about him, because he had said: “I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.” BSB BSB: At this, the Jews began to grumble about Jesus because He had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
CPDV And they said: “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? Then how can he say: ‘For I descended from heaven?’ ” BSB BSB: They were asking, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then can He say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
CPDV And so Jesus responded and said to them: “Do not choose to murmur among yourselves. BSB BSB: “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus replied.
CPDV No one is able to come to me, unless the Father, who has sent me, has drawn him. And I will raise him up on the last day. BSB BSB: “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
CPDV It has been written in the Prophets: ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has listened and learned from the Father comes to me. BSB BSB: It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from Him comes to Me—
CPDV Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God; this one has seen the Father. BSB BSB: not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God; only He has seen the Father.
CPDV Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me has eternal life. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.
CPDV I am the bread of life. BSB BSB: I am the bread of life.
CPDV Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died. BSB BSB: Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
CPDV This is the bread which descends from heaven, so that if anyone will eat from it, he may not die. BSB BSB: This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die.
CPDV I am the living bread, who descended from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread, he shall live in eternity. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.” BSB BSB: I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh.”
CPDV Therefore, the Jews debated among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” BSB BSB: At this, the Jews began to argue among themselves, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”
CPDV And so, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you. BSB BSB: So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you.
CPDV Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. BSB BSB: Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
CPDV For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. BSB BSB: For My flesh is real food, and My blood is real drink.
CPDV Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. BSB BSB: Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.
CPDV Just as the living Father has sent me and I live because of the Father, so also whoever eats me, the same shall live because of me. BSB BSB: Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
CPDV This is the bread that descends from heaven. It is not like the manna that your fathers ate, for they died. Whoever eats this bread shall live forever.” BSB BSB: This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your fathers, who ate the manna and died, the one who eats this bread will live forever.”
Many Disciples Turn Back (Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; Luke 14:25–33)
CPDV Therefore, many of his disciples, upon hearing this, said: “This saying is difficult,” and, “Who is able to listen to it?” BSB BSB: On hearing it, many of His disciples said, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it?”
CPDV But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: “Does this offend you? BSB BSB: Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this teaching, Jesus asked them, “Does this offend you?
CPDV Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending to where he was before? BSB BSB: Then what will happen if you see the Son of Man ascend to where He was before?
CPDV It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh does not offer anything of benefit. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. BSB BSB: The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
CPDV But there are some among you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who were unbelieving and which one would betray him. BSB BSB: However, there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray Him.)
CPDV And so he said, “For this reason, I said to you that no one is able to come to me, unless it has been given to him by my Father.” BSB BSB: Then Jesus said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him.”
Peter’s Confession of Faith (Matthew 16:13–20; Mark 8:27–30; Luke 9:18–20)
CPDV Therefore, Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” BSB BSB: So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?”
CPDV Then Simon Peter answered him: “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. BSB BSB: Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
CPDV And we have believed, and we recognize that you are the Christ, the Son of God.” BSB BSB: We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”
CPDV Jesus answered them: “Have I not chosen you twelve? And yet one among you is a devil.” BSB BSB: Jesus answered them, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”
CPDV Now he was speaking about Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. For this one, even though he was one of the twelve, was about to betray him. BSB BSB: He was speaking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For although Judas was one of the Twelve, he was later to betray Jesus.
